Wild and Free

Grew up on a farm in rural New Zealand, with a childhood barefoot, wild and free. In part my photographic work pulls from my childhood freedoms and adventures that still exist so strongly in my mind. Today we live on a small block of land where I strive to replicate this childhood for my children… it is here in our wild and wonderful surroundings that I endeavor to tell their story .. Life as it is.

 

 

Bio

Niki Boon is a previously trained physiotherapist turned photographer and mother of four wild and free children living in Marlborough, New Zealand. Boon’s current project was born form the desire to document her family’s days as they pursue an alternative education and lifestyle with their children in a rural environment.

The Frontier

“The buffalo trail became the Indian trail, and this became the trader’s trace, the trails widened into roads, and the roads into turnpikes, and these in turn were transformed into railroads.”               Frederick Jackson Turner, The Significance of the Frontier in American History, 1893

In American culture, the Myth of the Frontier corresponds to the territorial expansion towards the West during the XIXth century, a moving line between cleared and wild lands, the wild ones to be civilized. American society and identity have been built on this myth and many fictional or real stories have fed into a collective imaginary. In September 2012, I crossed the United States from East to West. Comfortably sat next to the driver, I lived this mythic crossing with the Pacific Ocean in focus. Now it is my turn to feed this collective imaginary by showing from the road this endless, wild and mystical territory.

 

 

 

 

Bio

Millet is a 38-year-old French photographer based in Nantes. He studied Geography and his photography work focuses on the relationship between humans and the spaces we built and live in.

Anna Jornet – Île

Anna Jornet

Île

Some years ago this family decided to move to a house isolated in the mountains. Île walks along the world they have built for themselves, trying to understand its essence while taking distance from the collective imaginary of this way of living. So throughout their silence and intimacy Île explores the implications of choosing a life out of the social norm and in contact with nature, focusing on the encounter with oneself, the dreams, the yearning to discover and the family’s identity. Île conceives nature like they have shown me, as part of the human being, as a space that determines the perception of time and nourishes inner observation, curiosity and creativity. This project raises considerations about the concepts of freedom and isolation –given their double nature of physical condition and state of mind- and how they transcend into love, fears, the relationship with nature and innocence.

 

 

 

 

Bio

Anna Jornet Puig (Girona, Spain, 1983). Initially graduated in Economics and Law. Later, after being fascinated by the photographs of William Eggleston and Graciela Iturbide, Jornet decided she wanted to become a photographer so she enrolled at the Documentary Photography Centre in Barcelona (CFD Barcelona) and at El Observatorio (Barcelona). Jornet been one of the recipients of Can Basté Foundation Grants –for an individual exhibition in Barcelona- and she has been selected to participate in Descubrimientos PhotoEspaña 2017. Her project Île has been exhibited at PA-TA-TA Festival, the Emergent Photography Festival of Granada, and it will be soon exhibited at DOCField Barcelona 2017 and at Encontros da Imagem of Braga 2017.

Day 8 – visual diary by Theo Stanley / nyc @theo_stanley Good night from nyc, this is my final post as part of this project. I appreciate the forum and a focus on photography with an audience that is serious about photography. My career is in moving image, and although photography is at the basis of my work as a director and dp, it’s been nice for me to have a creative focus on the still image, which I am wanting to give more time. Day 8 – visual diary by Theo Stanley / nyc @theo_stanley This image is another self portrait for my continued series #theostanleyself I will often note a location or opportunity for an image, but if the conditions aren’t right, will return to the location when I am back in that area to try and get what I was after. This image worked well in color too, but black and white gave it more congruity in the optical composites, and made it feel more controlled in the end.

Day 7 – visual diary by Theo Stanley / nyc @theo_stanley An arrangement of some various objects of interest. I love sculptural objects, and seem to accumulate stuff more than I should. Each item has a way of justifying itself as it holds an idea or memory, or becomes a prop or element in a photograph or film, or is rewarding for me just to look at or handle. Any collection drastically improves as it is refined, any nyc’s compressed spaces demand it. For those items that I part with, I photograph them in a typified way before letting it go. Which I guess is a way of not really letting it go. #theostanleyself

I think it’s good to upend pattern behavior, or at least to be aware of it. I will often change the route that I motorcycle to travel to work, even if a touch longer, to try and turn up new corners of the city. #nycnarrative

Day 6 – visual diary by Theo Stanley / nyc @theo_stanley.comGood night from a final evening in the Catskills mountains, north of NYC. Tonight was spent with family, enjoying a meal and viewing the Perseid meteor shower which peaked this weekend. Back to the city tomorrow. The remains of this photograph act more like a painting or a silkscreen print with photographic material, broken, banded, color polluted and artifacted. I rarely push something this far, but why not? And I am not feeling precious tonight. I had specialized in alternative process printing at university, learning early printing out techniques including cyanotype, platinum / palladium printing, gum bichromate and van dyke printing techniques. It has been too long since I have worked with this chemistry, and it’s fun for me to try and find an equivalent in breaking and reconstructing this image. #breakingimages #catskillsnarrative #meadowdwellers
