all i can say is that you rocked my boat……venues for young photographers may be changing drastically and unpredictably, but this new work i have seen over the last few weeks is shaking the ground of possibility for the future…..the clear authorship of these photographers who submitted EPF portfolios to BURN will become apparent to you in the coming weeks….

10 finalists have been chosen out of the over 1,000 entries for the Emerging Photographer Fund grant of $10,000….

one of these finalists will be chosen by a jury of peers as the 2009  EPF grantee….

the funding for the EPF comes from generous donors to BURN and the  Magnum Cultural Foundation , a non-profit wing of Magnum Photos Inc.

the essays of these 10 authors will be revealed  here on BURN, one by one,  in the coming weeks leading up to the announcement of the grant recipient at the Look3 Festival of the Photograph in Charlottesville, Virginia in June…that comes out to i think 2 essays per week up until announcement day…each essay will be labeled as a FINALIST…i should be able to start publishing the finalists starting May 15, this coming Friday….in other words, each week you will know of two more finalists….

i have chosen a prestigious 5 person jury of peers to select the EPF grantee from the 10 finalists….i will not be on this jury….one juror is  from Magnum..the other 4 were selected from a wide demographic spectrum of our craft and our art….these jurors will be identified at the same moment as the announcement of the 2009  EPF recipient….

there were a solid 200 very competitive portfolios out of the 1000 entries…..these top 200 will be published on BURN throughout the year….these portfolios will be given special attention by me all year in terms of selecting prints for sale in the BURN gallery, career guidance,  recommendations to magazine editors, consideration for funded assignments here, and a general matching of photographer to venue whenever possible….

for those of you who submitted work, i give you my heartfelt thank you…with your permission, your work will be a pillar of what is published on BURN in 2009…my goal here is to launch us into leading edge publishing where the audience IS the magazine and the audience is funded by the magazine….you have proved  to me your collaboration with your  entries, i will  prove my part  by reflecting it right back to you on your BURN….

ALL….

i am hitchhiking to New York today…my friend Medford is picking me up at a designated gas station and off we go for the 9 hour drive up the coast…

i could tell you that i have a book signing for my “Living Proof” at the Powerhouse arena tonight (9pm) during the New York photo fest (Book Soup) and i hope to see you there…that is actually true…(by the way Living Proof now in the MOMA book store…kinda cool i thought..cool for my guys in the South Bronx)

HOWEVER, the more REAL TRUTH is that i must get to the city just in time to try and save the Kibbutz space…the BURN gallery space…

my old loft space and hopefully now your gallery space….a space for showing your work….a space for selling some of your prints……yes, there will be two sleeping spaces in this loft, but all of my personal effects are gone and the walls will be only for your work…the loft will be so “decorated” as to be clearly a gallery….and the loft can also serve as the BURN HOTEL should you be in New York and need a place to crash…

i always have quite a bit of drama in my life, but never more than now….this movie is full of suspense….and you are in this movie…..i often dream of “no drama”, but somehow that just isn’t going to happen…

thanks quite literally to your generous and timely donations, we might just save the Kibbutz by literally hours….no joke..landlords in New York do not wait….

we, yes WE ,need this space not only for your gallery presentations but as a BURN office … i can edit and do most things from my laptop from anywhere, but this ends up being so so stressful and not sustainable in the long run…

BURN needs a real home….

and while the view from the Kibbutz is fantastic, i do not think anyone would describe this small space as extravagant…this space rents out right now to me for $2000. per month…i would like to tell you that i could afford it out of my back pocket, but i cannot…i am struggling along with everyone else in this global financial downturn…as a matter of fact, if i ever wanted to re-live my poor college days, i am pretty darned close…as a student i always loved the stories of starving struggling artists and i have managed to live out that fantasy!!! but, forget my personal woes….this is about US… we must try to survive in this clime….perhaps even thrive in this clime…we do have SOME things going for us…a very popular venue and all of our collected works…and collected ENERGY!!!

ok, practical stuff is HAPPENING…

Anton and i are now scrambling to make the very best showing of BURN for the Look3 festival….we are going to use video programs, not slide show programs, to create a totally cool hi def minute and a half to two minute “best of BURN” show…we are getting a major donation of time and effort and technology from one of Anton’s friends in Belgium……i am editing for this now….and writing a script..by the way, writing a script for a two minute show is harder than if i had an hour..but i do not….besides, two minutes just perfect….

in addition, Mike Courvoisier and i are building a more traditional but effective slide show of the EPF finalists…the organizers of Look3 have given me a center stage prime time slot at this festival for BURN…15 minutes…BURN SHOW, EPF finalists announcements…..our logo will appear on the brochures…BURN will be hot at Look3..or, rather should be hot if we can make it hot…or not!!!…right this minute if you saw me you would not think that this is a man who can pull off anything anytime soon….i wonder too….hmmmmmm

by the way, it took me literally weeks to finally push the “publish” button here on BURN for donations…i am totally averse to asking anyone ever for money…i just cannot do it….never could…my parents raised me with a different value system to a fault…all these years as a professional photographer, i always had to have someone else actually ask a client for my fee…hence Magnum….my tendency is to give rather than sell…but finally, out of sheer desperation, and being leaned on by everyone on the planet to have a donate button, i did it….simple survival….

to say thank you to all of you who have just contributed to BURN is not enough….i actually do not know what to say or to write….overwhelmed with gratitude sounds trite even though i am…hmmmmm, how about something like , ok friends with this vote of confidence from you , i am really going to bust it….and make it very clear to you that your contribution is an investment for you and for all of us…make it very clear to you that it was worth it…i promise to make it more than worth it for you…damn, now that sounds like some kind of weird campaign promise or something and i do not like that either…well, ok just thank you…(by the way, i am going to have a CPA draft a complete accounting of all funds coming in and will report all of this to donors by the end of the year…make sense??)

now, that is not the end of this dramatic feature movie….as soon as Look3 is over , i am going to make a rough list of what pictures i know that you have for the BURN gallery (we can have another name if you want)….selecting photographs for the gallery will be tricky, but we will have an online version as well….while we are producing the BURN show, please look at your work very carefully..find one or two or three photographs that you think would work on someone’s wall..this is a very different edit than you might do for another purpose…think think…study the market…think think

for my part, i am also in the process of creating some limited edition books, and maybe work on a handmade book or two over several months….profits from these will be in part used to support BURN as well…you may want to be thinking about what you could do in this regard ….i will do a post on limited editions at some point soon….

ok, now i must go….a long long drive ahead….IF you happen to be in New York please come to see me tonight in Dumbo at the Powerhouse Arena, 9-11pm…Book Soup…several authors signing….cold beer at the BURN GALLERY after, so come and check out OUR space…

please enjoy your day…..thank you again…big high fives all around!!!

cheers, david

EEEHAWW…it´s coming down to the wire now..good luck to all of you who ranked in the top 10, congrats to all who earned a place in the top 200..and a prayer for the winner..because that´s when the fun and work will really launch you into the stratosphere..many thanks DAH on behalf of all the hopeful applicants, on behalf of the one person who will get to fly, on behalf of all of us at Burn and on behalf of all who are watching and waiting for an exciting photographic tomorrow..

    hugs
    kat-

  5. oh my god this site is powerful. DAH…you’ve got yourself some cool ju ju. watching, waiting, with a huge smile on my face for the photographer who shines in the end.

  6. DAH – YOU FUCKING ROCK!!! this is very exciting and look forward to finding out the winner at LOOK3!!!!

  7. still on the edge of our seats.
sounds like an exciting years viewing here with all.
a trillion thanks for the motivation.

  8. Hello DAH,

I created and shared with burn magazine a light box before March 15. Burn magazine clearly appears in the lightbox sharing list but I can see that the image public views counter has not moved.
(the counter’s location is: Photoshelter homepage > my website > stats & analytics > public image views)
I was just wondering if something went wrong.
I understand that you can’t answer on a personal basis but I am torn between not being an extra pain and the regret of not having shared my work…
Anyway, thanks for organizing all that,

    Bruno

  9. David,

can’t wait to see the essays, it would be great if non-finalists were allowed to drop a link to their submissions too. the more, the merrier, and I am sure there are pearls in these “also ran”.

  10. Looking forward to the announcement, what an achievement for DAH, the team at Burn, the finalists and the recipient of the grant. This is a real milestone for photography and I fully believe will be a beacon to photography for years to come.

    Congrats

    Ian

  11. ALL

Its pretty amazing that this has come into being in such a shitty financial climate and I gotta say that MR HARVEY is one extremely special dude for putting this together.

I know that BURN is a ‘love’ job and sure its got lots of online support and I hope will eventually reward the team behind it (David, Anton, Bob and I am sure heaps of others I don’t know about) with lots more than just love, but I know the effort these kinda things take and well all I can say is thanks David.

The generosity that you have shown is really unparallelled in this industry…

And look I just love it, cos for someone as opinionated as myself it really gives me a venue to vent…hehehehehehehe!

Cheers and congrats to everybody who got their act together to put something in the EPF, but most of all congrats to BURN for actually making it happen!

  12. Sounds like a heap of exciting work to be seen…………..it’s got to be compulsory viewing for digital and art students alike, a great resource of the future

  13. Hello there,
I don’t usually write here on this forum although I come here and read almost everyday.
I’d like to say thank you to David and all the stuff of Burn for putting this together, to have the patience of going through 1000+ essays and for your generosity…as Lisa Hogben pointed out this is quite rare in this industry.
Thank you again for giving us this great possibility to show up our work.
    Ciao!

  14. After a negative day yesterday, I awoke this morning feeling rather positive for some reason. And the excitement rising from the upcoming EPF announcement enhances that positivity no end. And I didn’t even enter. I wasn’t ready.

So, today is going to be a good day. On way or another.

Huge congratulations to all who placed well and most particularly to whomever secures the big award.

  15. Not to steal thunder from the EPF finalists, but I was wondering if perhaps there could be a fund we could contribute to associated with Burn involving smaller sums of money. For example, if one of the finalists or semi-finalists needed a smaller amount to complete a project? I know what it costs to feed my Epson 3800 ink and 17×22 paper, so maybe a photographer was at the point of exhibiting and only needed $1,000 to print or whatever? Something David could tap into for these kinds of things without great fanfare? I dunno, just an idea.

  16. I like your idea Jim. I reckon we could all chip in small amounts if a chosen project was advertised that needed a financial “group hug” from Burn readers.

  17. Thanks DAH for everything you did making this happen, i am really looking forward to seeing who is at the forefront of this game, and what type of crazy stories they’ve been in the midst of–

  18. I can’t wait to see the selects! Very special thanks to DAH for making this happen. Burn has become a daily morning pilgrimage for me – a place to reflect on the Flin Flon nature of photography and the reasons we all do it.

  19. JIM

first of all, bless you…thank you for thinking like this…i have been trying to figure out for awhile exactly how to do something as per your suggestion…smaller stipends given throughout the year…and specific assignments as well….

donors to EPF receive a tax break deduction because of the 501c3 non-profit status we have through the Magnum Cultural Foundation…monies distributed through this channel come under very careful IRS scrutiny and it is impossible to just start passing money around from this fund to whoever you and i may think need it most…

however, starting this week, we are going to have a donate button for BURN….this will be just to cover the costs of running BURN and making the improvements we would like to make here…at the very same time, i am also seeking large sponsorships for assignments for the photographers here who would also be in a mix with the so called “legends”…for example, i would like to put 2 “legends” and 5 “emerging photographers” to work on assignment to produce original photography for BURN…i think this mix, even if only done once, would then attract even more sponsorship…original production with perhaps specific sponsors for specific projects….

all of the finalists here will receive lots of special attention….at least three will receive tuition free advanced workshops, to study with whomever they want, at the Tuscany Photographic Workshops, Santa Fe Workshops, Magnum Workshops, and my own personal mentoring program and workshop….others will receive the ink and paper you suggest….gift giving seems to be tight these days from the big camera companies, but i suspect we will be able to garner for one of our finalists at least a gratis camera from one of the “biggies”…

deciding who gets what is always the problem with fund distribution…while my goal is to support as many photographers as i can, i will no doubt receive some vicious hate mail from those that i do not (yes, that happened last time and i almost gave up this effort completely)…this is the downside of running BURN …no matter what you do to try to do something positive, you will pick up enemies as you have never known..the dark side of human nature…however, i just have to look towards the light….

Jim, i think i will try to get you on a small committee i will create to specifically see how we can best serve these young photographers with funds distribution……for all of your sometime crusty image here, i wholeheartedly applaud your altruistic thoughts this morning….thank you…

    cheers, david

  20. DAVID BACHER…

i thought i worded the post carefully, but i will take another look…the finalists are announced one by one by publication here on BURN right up until the stipend recipient is named at Look3…each week you will know of two more finalists….more clear???

    cheers, david

  21. DAH
    you are a rock star!!!
    waiting….
    eagerly….
    once again,
    you
    impress
    encourage
    and
    initiate….
    what a gift…..
    waiting…..

now could your donate button on burn be tax free too — with a receipt? or should it go through the magnum cultural foundation? (coz i dont want it to)

the shadows of the dark side of human nature get engulfed in the shadows which heavily bear them. yes, if you look towards the light, shadows would be all behind you….

¨if you look towards the light, shadows would be all behind you….¨

You are a one and only..

    k-

  24. Very neat, exciting unfolding plan! But i am not a patient person, this is going to hard / fun!

    DAH..a question..

Will (or do) the finalists themselves know beforehand? If so, will they be able to give you a tight presentation to show, or will you and Anton create the presentations from the submissions directly??

  25. GRACIE…

i will set it up so that you may do as you please…get the tax break and support EPF, or contribute straight away to BURN , no tax break…

remember also that by purchasing prints/books from the upcoming gallery will also lend support for BURN which will in turn lend support to our colleagues here…

many thanks for your good spirit always…..

    cheers, david

  26. ERICA…

all finalists will have a chance to write more material and re-edit as per necessary…Anton and i always give the photographers the chance to approve any edit that appears here on BURN or in a festival slide show….i totally forgot to mention that we skipped over the original idea of doing Blurb style books for this final judging…it was just going to become unwieldy……the jurors will view the work as submitted with a chance for the finalists to write more if they think it is necessary…

    cheers, david

  27. awww yeah! what a fun way to discover new work! i can’t wait to see the portfolios as they are revealed through the year.

do the top 10 and top 200 already know who they are?

  28. I find it astonishing that you received angry words last time. That’s dreadful.

A gem of an idea, Jim.

I just got word that an image of mine is to be on a book cover so I’m officially back at work. Yippee! Pauly’s back in the game. Funnily enough it’s the same image that was on the last book cover I had in 2003.

How weird. Just as I left work to be a stay at home dad I had an image used on a cover and now that I’ve returned to work, the same image is used again by a different publisher here in Europe. Just what I needed.

    A beer tonight I think.

  29. ERICA…

    yes, that is correct….

    LIZ…

    nobody knows who they are….yet!!

    PAUL…

good for you…interestingly, the same pictures are often used over and over….same with print sales….sure, treat yourself to a beer…..will you link us to your cover??

    cheers, david

  30. I sure will. Haven’t seen it yet. Just got my statement. It feels good to be back in the fray. It has been a long time.

Excuse me a moment. I’m just going to get up and do a little dance.

  31. Thank you for doing this David. It is a stellar example of those willing to go the extra mile to pass on their advice, experience and influence.
I wish everyone the best of luck.
    Jeremy

  32. Gracie –

just to chime in on this one: we have set up donations for BURN to be handled by PayPal and they are as such labeled by them as “donations”… of which you will get a payment receipt as well. BURN is not registered as a non-profit organization.

    cheers
    anton

  33. “totally forgot to mention that we skipped over the original idea of doing Blurb style books for this final judging… it was just going to become unwieldy”

DAH, sorry I have to say this, I’m really disappointed in the swerve away from book-format judging. I was really excited that the true merit of each author’s work was going to be discovered in the comfort of someone’s hands while possibly sitting in a comfortable sofa; which inherently puts someone in a digestive mood, verses now, possibly in front of a monitor, which often does exactly the opposite.

An entirely different type of talent will win in a web presentation verses a book presentation, so I’m saying out loud I think the grand finally has been cheated and a great piece of printed work may not find its way into printed history, but a web-strong presentation may be shoe-horned into print, or maybe it won’t be printed at all as it was never its strength.

Think about it David, how many times have you walked into a book store and sat in a deep leather couch and paged through a prospect photography book, how does that experience compare to sitting in front of a monitor managed for you by slideshow pro?

All the serious purse-seekers weren’t naïve. They knew that the ‘interest factor’ of their single images might get them in the door, but it was going to be the calibre of the book they designed that would allow them to have a chance in the grand finally. For the prize that’s being offered, I’ve got a funny feeling there are loads of blurb books already drafted to be ready for the next step.

I’m also not ashamed to say that I’m personally disappointed for selfish reasons. The format of this contest pretty much guaranteed the creation of photography books; books where there was once just essays that I could only see using my monitor, Books like Brigitte et Bernard by Audrey Bardou, sure they will still get to print when the priorities make it appealing, but this contest made it a priority to get photographs off the hard drive and into print now, a concept you preach most consistently and what I like the most about you David.

So David, change it back to the format you proposed please. And yes, I know you could kill me for being so ungrateful, but I think it was an aspect of your plan that was important both to your print ethos as well as the print culture, and also to instigate people to think about a book as the final stage of their work verses a flash site.

    Still Friends?

  34. “… for example, i would like to put 2 “legends” and 5 “emerging photographers” to work on assignment to produce original photography for BURN…i think this mix, even if only done once, would then attract even more sponsorship…original production with perhaps specific sponsors for specific projects….”

Brilliant. Same assignment (or project), different facets (or interpretations)?

  35. I have to agree with Joe..and I do know from the word around burn street that many many people have been working on their book in case..maybe the loss of 13 days isn’t as big a factor as it may seem with regard to getting books into the hands of the 5..the reveal method could still hold, all the finalists would just have to stay hush..any way, any chance?

  36. Call out to GINA MARTIN … I lost the link to your special project which you posted here once … any chance I might … please? :))

  37. And I didn’t even enter. I wasn’t ready.
    ————————————–

Can happen to the best of us, Paul…..Did not send anything either :-))).

Not ready + not good enough = not this year ;-)

  38. never a dull moment around this place! Such a tease david…
Really looking forward to the unveiling, the discussions, new eye and brain candy…

(and jim, such a brilliant idea. Community is based on support and common ownership…I’m constantly amazed that we’ve all been given this forum to share and reflect on our values and responsibilities…I like the idea of taking that to a new level)

  39. hmmmpph,

dammit, i cannot get what i want.
but i guess, if i could assure that I WILL DO the 501 c corporation articles myself. i should get what i want yeah? but no, i cannot do the damn corporation articles so the donate button for burn will stay as is.

question: if the donation goes to the epf under magnum corporation funding and the ‘ticket’ says for burn, would burn ie david and/or anton get it?

  40. JIM

I know what it costs to feed my Epson 3800 ink and 17×22 paper, so maybe a photographer was at the point of exhibiting and only needed $1,000 to print or whatever? Something David could tap into for these kinds of things without great fanfare? I dunno, just an idea.
    ————————–

Jim, that’s enough! Don’t you start getting romantic on us…. :-)))))

  41. OH HECK

who cares who gets what and when and how much…
    what gives
    as long as given yeah??

  42. Herve, hardly romantic. I’m a pragmatist and a new set of ink cartridges for my 3800 cost over $500. For an “emerging photographer,” that kind of money can be a major hurdle. Just think a fund to cover these kinds of costs would be a good thing.

  43. I can’t handle the suspense anymore! David, you’re really good at keeping everyone on the edge of their seats! Be sure, I’ll be checking in obsessively to see who the next finalists are.

  44. David,
I can only say thank you so many times before it sounds trite, but thank you for takeing the time away from your own projects to help the next generation.

  45. hey all

….so David and I are working hard behind the scenes of BURN, keeping things afloat, pushing forward as hard as we can. But I guess you already knew that one… :-)))

David and I both committed to BURN in NYC in December 2008, we shook hands and went for it. Yeah I know we launched on an impossible moment right before or after Christmas – I can’t remember which day exactly – but right now, either one of those days sounds like impeccably bad timing from our part :-)

And throughout the first month we called each other daily… setting up essays, finding new talent, going through submissions, helping photographers deliver their essays and singles, taking care of the tech side, setting up an essay system, spinning ideas….

And then we both received a monthly cell phone bill of about 1500$ – gulp. I think we both never learned a software application like Skype so quickly and went broke at the same time.

These days we still call each other daily. Make the editor’s decisions together. Discuss BURN’s future and how we should handle it. Half of the time I’m hopping between Brussels and Japan, and David’s flying from Mexico to Spain to NYC… The time zone differences are massive. We work together from different continents but we do it really well, only needing “half a word” to understand and act. This is our strength… Of course there are people helping out right now, to whom we are massively indebted… Michael Courvoisier, Bob Black, Kerry Payne, Chris Bradley, and many others that are going to kill me for forgetting them, are all doing extremely valuable work… And of course not to forget the past work of the whole team at the infamous BURN initial meetup at the Kibbutz in NYC……. thanks a million……..

But you might have noticed: there are no sponsors who take care of BURN. No-one who would set us free so we can fully realize the potential of what we’re doing. Don’t get me wrong, we’re working very hard to find him (or her, or “them”)… But at the same time, we’re – naturally – totally devoted to keeping the site running, A fine balance for sure.

Incidentally, this is the first long editorial comment I’ve made here… I felt the time had come to start participating more on the front side, commenting more often, joining the discussion, doing a dialogue post once in a while….

David’s DAH man, but BURN is the both of us together… together making the editorial decisions, guiding the photographers to submit their work, doing the online and offline mentoring, Work-in-Progress and workshops, preparing the carefully targeted marketing of BURN, pitching the BURN story and our ideas to the right people – or at least, what we think are the right people… With funding, our incredibly “lean mean BURN machine” would be able to make things really happen, hire staff, freelancers and search for talent, literally put young photographers out there to create content for BURN, do the same with iconic photographers, and push forward with the incredible stuff we still have in store for you guys…

[And no, we’re not telling this time :-) …. we’ve literally had our ideas stolen three times right from under our noses… no kidding… Which is bad enough to think of, but at the same time, deep down, this also means that we’re totally on the right track….]

But there is a flip side to all this: David is has had to put his Family Project on hold. I am on the verge of putting my Yakuza project on hold.

    No joke.

We don’t want to give up our own photography.

And at the same time we’re on the verge of finding out if BURN is sustainable or not. If it’s of any use to continue this amazing adventure. But don’t don’t don’t don’t get us wrong, we totally will fight to our last dying breath to keep on doing this… But the sheer weight of money and time on our backs, is crushing us slowly. Somewhere deep inside of us the little realist leprechaun (and he is tiny in our case, i admit) tells us “this is something so big that it cannot be funded privately by just two young-at-hearts”…. run Forest, run?

Oddly enough, an opportunity presented itself very recently….but we stupidly passed it up because in our hearts we felt differently than any other businessman would: we didn’t want to charge a submission fee for the EPF…. in hindsight, we were massively ignorant…. i mean, if we would have charged a very modest 25$ for every EPF submission, we’d have had our costs covered and we could have sent out a first emerging and a first iconic photographer on assignment and set up our gallery space. Now we have none of those.

    Or do we?

I must have gotten at least a dozen private emails asking to put up a ‘donate’ button. David the same. And yes, it does feel strange to ‘ask’ for money this way, but on the other hand we have to keep on reminding ourselves that we are giving. Giving it all. Providing an outstanding platform. For photography. For discussion. Forwarding careers. Building a community. Setting up a gallery. Work-in-Progress. Workshops. The list is really really long, we haven’t even talked about the half of it…. And we have amazing site visitor stats to back us up. We KNOW we just cannot stop here. There is so much to do, so much to push forward, so many brilliant ideas that will change people’s lives… Seriously. And it has happened right here already.

And maybe. Maybe we can even generate enough funding for BURN through a simple button…

The “Donate” page is up there in the top right-hand corner as we speak.

Please try it. Seriously. We would love to see it all work out… and we’re sure you do too…. PayPal and any kind of credit card will work… from anywhere in the world… Or contact David or me personally….

Wow what a long comment….I’m sorry it ended up so long, but it feels good to be on the front side of BURN again, after six months on the inside…. it was, and still is, literally the ride of my life.

    Peace….. and hugs my friends.

    Anton

PS as an extra…. lookey here…. spread the word! buy one of these! visit the BURN store here: http://www.cafepress.com/burnstore

Can we print a t-Shirt with one of DAH’s iconic photos…??
( like magnum did with Martin Parr???)

  47. Anton, thanks for the update, I was afraid all this good work was being done at the expense of you guys very own personal project.

Any kind of numbers on what is needed to help the boat afloat? Every month? Will the funds help the Kibbutz gallery sustainance as well?

Yes, it’s time to give back.

1500$ phone bills?!?!?: talk about firing squads in the morning….. :-)))

  48. anton,
    thanks.
maybe you can ‘charge’ the EPF finalist a ‘donation’. whatever they feel they can afford.

  49. panos skoulidas

I would love a gangsta photo from Living Proof
or the “white horse on the porch”…
or the “Brazilian dancer with wardrobe malfunction”..:)

  50. herve –

the funds are first and foremost meant to be able to edit the magazine from two beach chairs in fiji.

david’s on his way to the airport right now, i’m leaving tomorrow at dawn.

    :o)

no seriously… we will come up soonest with a schedule for accounting to all the donors…. play it right like we should….

yes right now we are trying to keep the gallery up…. and in that way get all your work shown to more people and sell prints and make the circle whole all the way back to the photographer….

    audrey –

yes that is perfect… if you have paypal you can just login right there from the donate page….

  51. audrey, I found you had to enter the amount and click “update” before it would accept the amount, and then log into Paypal. Unconventional, but it worked.

  52. YOUNG TOM – unfortunately, i still have not posted my Mexico by Bus project…. i am bad.

ANTON – who are you BOB BLACK?? that was one long entry… ha ha. will i be seeing you at LOOK? great idea for the donation button. i love it.

I am so HAPPY…I am so excited …I can’t even FOCUS…WHERE…is the button?????????????

  55. ANTON

Thanks for coming out from behind-the-scenes to take your rightful place center stage. I know this has been a 2-man job since the get-go and I also remember with gratitude your incredible patience in dealing with me when we were trying to get my essay up and running in late December/early January.

What I think neither you nor DAH have understood is that this community has wanted from the start to be partners in the venture–that’s where the donations come in! As I just gave some $$$ to Burn, I breathed a sign of relief to FINALLY be able to give something back to David who has worked his butt off mentoring me for almost a year now. And that goes for you and your unsung work too.

I only have one request: the DONATIONS thread needs to be MORE OBVIOUS!!! Even knowing it was there, I still had a heck of a time finding it. What about a yellow “DONATE” button up in the top righthand corner? Please help people help BURN.

I loved reading everything you had to say, dear Anton, except for one thing. I got chills down my back when you said you were on the verge of putting your Yakuza project on hold. And I know DAH hasn’t had a minute to pursue his Off On A Family Drive project since Burn started in December. THIS IS NOT RIGHT! You guys have GOT to be able to do your own work. Please let us know how we can help. Burn is too big to be a 2 or 3 or 4 person job. It’s time for another in-person Group Gathering to bat around ideas of how to share the load. Maybe at DAH’s beach house after Look3???

    in deepest gratitude
    Patricia

  56. Gina, you baaad … :)) I look forward to seeing it on Burn one of these days then :))

  64. Hello David!

long time since the JD workshop last November in Venice, and what a great weekend it was. I was very sorry to see the workshop in Seattle get cancelled last month – I was planning to take it. Any plans to come to the west coast for teaching, mentoring?

About the EPF, I created a lightbox that I shared with Burn (I hope) of my doll project “It’s a Girl” and I have no idea if it was able to be viewed, so I am checking to make sure that at least it worked! In Photoshelter, it doesn’t appear in my ‘shared lightboxes’ but it is located in my lightboxes however and Burn shows up there in the ‘sharing’ section. Whew! I really hope it worked.

I also sent one image from that portfolio for the Burn “Selected Photographs” and I will be working on a multimedia piece of the same that I am planning to submit for the “Photographic Essays”.

I’m just hoping that my entries, emails are received. You had asked me to stay in touch last December before my trip to BA – and I’ve tried – but have not heard back, so I’d love to know if any of it has gotten your way.

    Saludos y Gracias,
    Edite

  65. “Donate Here” or “Support Burn” how’s that? Maybe even.. gasp.. yellow lettering. Yes it needs to stand out more. Providing an opportunity for others to give is very different from asking or begging for money.. nothing to feel bad about.. make it more visible for sure.

I’m curious how many of the ‘top 200’ might not have submitted if there were a $25 entry fee.

I think the donate button might surprise you.

  66. Patricia, Lance, Gina –

you are all right of course… the button should be more obvious… but we have such a sober design we have to keep balanced… so yes, we are working on it as we speak…

but i will veto the yellow! :-)))

  69. ANTON – i will be buying YOU a drink (or two) at LOOK! GOOD JOB on making the “donation” stand out more. i like it.

  70. ANTON/ DAVID,

I have not been as present lately on BURN with all my constant travels and moving plans but it is such a pleasure to see what you guys are doing here, how the magazine is developing. Little by little, the great vision that started last December is becoming a reality, even the T-shirts are now available:):):). While I have not been able to write much lately, I continue to read often, learn from the great essays that you share and the exchanges…. I cannot wait to see the work from the finalists. A little suspens makes it all the more exciting….

    Cheers,

    Eric

  71. Think of the DAY as auspicious. We probably, hopefully will.
I.d like to add, as David mentioned, you people at BURN can’t and don’t know probably 99% of us and for all of you to put the time in answering and obviously reading the post’s left, Is what we out here in the ‘real’ world need.
Excellent idea this site. i’M HOOKED LIKE A junky. crave it.

  72. Johan Jaansen

Bravo David, Anton and all of the regular contributors who have made Burn what it is. I have been hard pressed to find anything else like this on the web and putting aside the competition for a second, it has been a great site to meet, discuss and view some of the best emerging talent in the world today.

It must have been a huge process to review all of those essays, and the best part is that we as viewers will be able to indulge in some of those essays at leisure!

    Thankyou,
    Johan

    David

Is there something really, really special in the submissions of this year?
Something completly out of normal level?
Something you could say about ” Bloody hell if this is not the winner I am not David Alan Harvey!!”
    or something like that…. :)

by the way, I think this is very good situation you are not one of the jury.
But less of pleasure for you I guess. :)
And pne more questione, is one of the finalists person who is frequent writer of BURN?

    peace

  74. Aren´t you getting a bit too spesific now, Marcin..? ;-)

I am a little bit confused, but very very excited! Yesterday I saw the slideshow with the finalists of EPF 2008. It was funny to see the names of many of you that write here regularly. Now I know a bit more of “who you are” :) Some really nice and interesting stories.
Let´s wait, whoever appear among the finalists, we know they will be very happy and deserving it!
    Juhuuu!

  75. Andrea

The patience is not one of my best skills :)
And my questions are without names of course.
    Just David’s impressions about.
    :)

  76. ********* CALLING ALL EPF PARTICIPANTS ************

lets all donate and make burn work like we know it can

    peace, love & photography ; ))))))))))))))

  77. Marcin, thank you!! Very glad to hear that. Well, I won´t pretend I am patient either, I am actually happy some of the people here asked the questions that I was wondering about..
Wow, you´re both painter/photographer!? Very nice, cool paintings! I often go to Warsaw, maybe I contact you next time?!

  78. At last donations can begin. Great for those not in close proximity to the Kibbutz to be able to support.
Good to see you have made it more prominant, it might even need to go a bit more.

I think you will surprised at the level of support you will get from this, there are so many people who really appreciate what you bunch are doing.

    Bravo

    Ian

  79. Andrea

I live in Wroclaw. I go to Warsaw a few times per year only. Especially now when I have no time for breathing even. But if you will be in Wroclaw someday give me a note. :)

  80. MARCIN…

i have no patience either on many things…but you must be patient on this one please….how boring just to publish a list of names?? then everyone would go click on a link or google or whatever and the moment would just be gone…this way you will see the work the way i saw it…carefully..thoughtfully…the way the photographer intended…published on BURN instead of just a link….

as i always always say to you, i am waiting for something from you..i know you have work…let me just take a peek…..let’s make a deal..you show me your work and i will show the finalists???? laughing….have a great day Marcin….and come back more often..i miss you here on a regular basis…..

    cheers, david

  81. Hi David,

No name, just impression… As I said :)
you are satisfy? Very satisfy? or just satisfy?…:)
Ok, I will push no more. I will be patience.
I just teasing like you usally do :)

  82. ALL….

i am hitchhiking to New York today…my friend Medford is picking me up at a designated gas station and off we go for the 9 hour drive up the coast…

i could tell you that i have a book signing for my “Living Proof” at the Powerhouse arena tonight (9pm) during the New York photo fest (Book Soup) and i hope to see you there…that is actually true…(by the way Living Proof now in the MOMA book store…kinda cool i thought..cool for my guys in the South Bronx)

HOWEVER, the more REAL TRUTH is that i must get to the city just in time to try and save the Kibbutz space…the BURN gallery space…

my old loft space and hopefully now your gallery space….a space for showing your work….a space for selling some of your prints……yes, there will be two sleeping spaces in this loft, but all of my personal effects are gone and the walls will be only for your work…the loft will be so “decorated” as to be clearly a gallery….and the loft can also serve as the BURN HOTEL should you be in New York and need a place to crash…

i always have quite a bit of drama in my life, but never more than now….this movie is full of suspense….and you are in this movie…..i often dream of “no drama”, but somehow that just isn’t going to happen…

thanks quite literally to your generous and timely donations, we might just save the Kibbutz by literally hours….no joke..landlords in New York do not wait….

we yes WE need this space not only for your gallery presentations but as a BURN office … i can edit and do most things from my laptop from anywhere, but this ends up being so so stressful and not sustainable in the long run…

Anton and i are now scrambling to make the very best showing of BURN for the Look3 festival….we are going to use video programs, not slide show programs, to create a totally cool hi def minute and a half to two minute “best of BURN” show…we are getting a major donation of time and effort and technology from one of Anton’s friends in Belgium……i am editing for this now….and writing a script..by the way, writing a script for a two minute show is harder than if i had an hour..but i do not….besides, two minutes just perfect….

in addition, Mike Courvoisier and i are building a more traditional but effective slide show of the EPF finalists…the organizers of Look3 have given me a center stage prime time slot at this festival for BURN…15 minutes…BURN SHOW, EPF finalists announcements…..our logo will appear on the brochures…BURN will be hot at Look3..or, rather should be hot if we can make it hot…or not!!!…right this minute if you saw me you would not think that this is a man who can pull off anything anytime soon….i wonder too….hmmmmmm

by the way, it took me literally weeks to finally push the “publish” button here on BURN for donations…i am totally averse to asking anyone ever for money…i just cannot do it….never could…my parents raised me with a different value system to a fault…all these years as a professional photographer, i always had to have someone else actually ask a client for my fee…hence Magnum….my tendency is to give rather than sell…but finally, out of sheer desperation, and being leaned on by everyone on the planet to have a donate button, i did it….simple survival….

to say thank you to all of you who have just contributed to BURN is not enough….i actually do not know what to say or to write….overwhelmed with gratitude sounds trite even though i am…hmmmmm, how about something like , ok friends with this vote of confidence from you , i am really going to bust it….and make it very clear to you that your contribution is an investment for you and for all of us…make it very clear to you that it was worth it…i promise to make it more than worth it for you…damn, now that sounds like some kind of weird campaign promise or something and i do not like that either…well, ok just thank you…(by the way, i am going to have a CPA draft a complete accounting of all funds coming in and will report all of this to donors by the end of the year…make sense??)

now, that is not the end of this dramatic feature movie….as soon as Look3 is over , i am going to make a rough list of what pictures i know that you have for the BURN gallery (we can have another name if you want)….selecting photographs for the gallery will be tricky, but we will have an online version as well….while we are producing the BURN show, please look at your work very carefully..find one or two or three photographs that you think would work on someone’s wall..this is a very different edit than you might do for another purpose…think think…study the market…think think

for my part, i am also in the process of creating some limited edition books, and maybe work on a handmade book or two over several months….profits from these will be in part used to support BURN as well…you may want to be thinking about what you could do in this regard as well….i will do a post on limited editions at some point soon….

ok, now i must go….a long long drive ahead….IF you happen to be in New York please come to see me tonight in Dumbo at the Powerhouse Arena, 9-11pm…Book Soup…several authors signing….cold beer at the BURN GALLERY after, so come and check out OUR space…

please enjoy your day…..thank you again…big high fives all around!!!

    cheers, david

  83. oohhhhhh David..

  86. David and All,

Made a donation to Burn through the website (very easy) mostly in my mind to cover: a ‘suggested’ EPF grant application fee, the ongoing ‘workshop’ learning I get via Burn and um, my share of the beer from At Home 08. But I actually don’t care how Burn uses it — I am very certain it will be used well.

With regards to the EPF grant, I made a Blurb book in any event. It is a great way to actually complete a project.

Finally, will be a Look3 and I can make myself available for any Burn or other related activities as needed.

ANTON …WE LOVE YOU…where is Spacecowboy

  89. Wish I could be there!

Pleased to see the donation button. Absolutely nothing wrong with asking for money esp. in this case, and this really isn’t the case… Its not a demand or a requirement. Its up to the reader, no pressure. If they are happy to do so great! Just waiting on a pay check at this end then will certainly add a little to the coffers!

  90. So the finalists will be announced in a month? :-D

Gosh, I wished I could contribute to the $2000 a month, but I haven’t got a penny… if I was you guys, I’d be looking for all kinds of sponsorship at the moment (both public and corporate)!

  91. Dear David,

I’ve been away for over a month and so much has happened. Although I’m not completely surprised, as you never know what is going to happen around here. It’s such an exciting place to be. The whole concept of the Burn gallery is an inspired idea. Where better to display the work that you have helped inspire, than the place where you started Burn?! I also think the donation button is a good idea. I understand how it goes completely against your gut feelings but I think we are all having to make adjustments at the moment, given the situation we have found ourselves since the end of last year. We must all evolve in our own ways in order to survive.

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” Mr Charles Darwin

No-one wants to see Burn go extinct just yet!

Best of luck to all the finalists of the EPF. I can only reiterate what an amazing impact being the first recipient was on me. To anyone who doubts the ‘realness’ of Burn and the positive impact it can have, please drop me a line and I’d be happy to convince you otherwise. Sounds like the show at Look3 will be pretty amazing this year. Doubt I’ll be able to make it this year unfortunately, but will certainly be there it spirit.

I must get back to 6-weeks worth of desertification pictures I just produced for Pulitzer. Shooting is the fun part, now comes the hard work!

    Bestest to All,
    Sean

  93. Boheme. The energy here swirls inspired, despite the crisis, forget the crisis. Most countries of the world have been in crisis for generations. Crisis in America would still feel like the best times for someone from a poor nation. There is no story without a conflict; and without a story, it can’t be art; so be thankful for struggles. We all need some drama, admit it.

There’s magnetism here. Like an open secret. *winks*

  94. Hi

@ SEAN: Really like the quote of Darwin.

    @ ALL:

I’ve been out of burn just for a week. I’m really astonished of what is going on!! :-). The “momentum” (phisically speaking) tends to the speed of light.
Glad to see the DONATION button. and I do not see that as a “Money” button, I’d rather see that like a “Thanks” button. Most of Burnians have learned a lot from late December…

    Gotta go.
    Keep looking forward, Patricio

I wish I could be there tonight, unfortunately I can’t make it. I would love to meet you and maybe one day actually talk to you about my work and actually get some feedback from you ( really curious as to what you think). All that your doing for emerging photographers with the magazine and a gallery is amazing. I am really excited about the gallery space (can’t wait to see it and the name is perfect), prints and other publications. I made my donation and although I wish I could have given more, in the future I would not hesitate to invest more money as well as my time, in the gallery or to help in any way I can for such a great idea and collaboration.

and Kathy and Lori and Carrie and Kerry and …….

  101. haha – laughing my ass off..

BEATE .. superb.. and civilian.. yes.. i left england at 2 days notice after knwoing b as a friend for a couple of years..

actually – she sent me a set of front door keys for my birthday, along with a half knitted scarf..
    hmm.. irresistible..

  102. A civilian-mass audience

oups…that means that I better keep the keys of your Greek house under the third pot …

    You are too many…
AND WHO knows MAYBE someone will perceive this as an…
    Hmm…irresistible invitation…
    Not a laughing matter…Mr.Bowie…nope

  103. i can tell that beate has a couple of fans here..

    love, love, is a verb
    love is a DOING word..

    and so i must DO.

ahhhhhhhhhhhh – two weeks and the Balkan sun will be shining on us all..

    PEA´S and CHIPS all round.

  104. A civilian-mass audience

I have your e-mail Davidbeate…I am on hold for few months now…Civilians have to endure …
    …to wait …
I want to meet you guys…well, let’s see I know all the details of your schedule…
you will be the first to be civilized ( I meant …notified) :))))\
    What not to LOVE…balkans indeed

  105. it´s going to be superb.. and we´d both look forward to a meeting..

one project is to travel up to the 20km area of coastline being disputed between croatia and slovinia.. a tourist beach and hotel complexes.. get the low down there and then, maybe, a chan ce to drive round the top to venice and on.. perhaps.. money will be the maker of the after plan.

another story is the neocolonialism of the area.. profitable business being bought up cheap no non-croats, renovated and then offered back.. lots of leads.. friends.. one commission under my belt which covers the 5 weeks costs.

going to do some work with landmine clearing companies.. most there are businesses and i want to find the source of the companies.. only one is charety – and that is norwegian.. my new homeland.. looking to publish locally.

then there is youth culture of course.. punk.. dance.. but mainly punk, paradoxically.. spanning the divides.. EXITing from war.. young people connecting.
    you know..
THE hope for removing war, to my mind, is by connecting the youth.. dissolving borders through the application of MUSIC, conversation and levity.. it has helped in northan ireland over the past number of years and likewise it IS working in da balkans… i´ve seen it :ø)

and so.. busy busy.. if i can also organise a workshop.. which i am trying to .. then i will be in PROFIT:
    magic word.

    and waffle..
thats magic too.. along with positivity and the number 23.

Viva Tor Capa!…….. and where is the other baby Felix? LOVE

Well, I WANT to GIVE the biggest HUG TO MY BOY

    ANTON, WE LOVE YOU
    ANTON you are DA MAN

    Mr. DAH I have a quote for you…ok, enough…

  107. you know anton is on a plane right now.. to japan.. to photograph the 3rd (is it 4th?) installment of jacuzzi..
    jacuzza..
    yakuzza
    you know.

    it´s true..
anton the great is changing gear.. here.. then look3… working burn.. sending floating mobiles of flying vikings to hang above tor capas bed..

    Venice, California: A Daily Carnival

The Center for Experimental Art & Architecture is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Panos Skoulidas, an incisive reflection on one of the most vibrant and distinctive cities in the world: Venice, California. Opening reception is on Friday, May 15, 7-10 PM.

Venice is the home of many artists, musicians, architects and designers such as Ed Ruscha, Dennis Hopper, John Baldessari, Ken Price, Robert Graham, and many others who have come to Venice to find their artistic inspiration. This is where Jim Morrison lived and the Doors performed in their formative days. The city is also notorious for its bohemian atmosphere, rambunctious boardwalks, its pot-infused drum circles, its misfits, outcasts and never-say-die counter-cultures. This is exactly what interests Panos – the colorful intensity of its diverse personalities, the confluence of artistic inspiration and the downtrodden, the co-habitation of the bizarre and the everyday.

Born in Arta, Greece, Panos worked as a photojournalist in Athens while becoming a master black and white photo printer. Photojournalism allowed him to travel extensively throughout Europe and United States. He eventually settled in Los Angeles where he now resides and works as a photographer.

“For many years Venice represented an antithesis of beautiful ideas and people seemed grotesque. It took me a while, quite a few visits to Venice Beach to realize that there is more than the eye can initially see” says Panos.

Taking his cues from the Doors’ musical genius, Panos represents Venice as a daily tidal shift: from daytime innocence of bright beach-sunlight to the darkness of the night: menacing and dangerous. The city is in constant flux and never-ending transformation and this is what Panos’ camera captures.

“Venice, California: A Daily Carnival” is a joyous celebration of Venice’s extreme diversity and an insightful reflection on the connectivity of two wildly different worlds that exist there–the day and night–and the incessant shift between them.

Center for Experimental Art & Architecture (CEAA) is dedicated to presenting emerging and established artists, architects, filmmakers, and photographers that have chosen experimentation as their primary mode of expression, demonstrating innovation and advancement in their respective disciplines.

Exhibition Opening Reception: Friday, May 15, 2009, 7-10 PM
    Curatorial Presentation: 8:30 PM
Donation: $10 (proceeds benefit CEAA programs)
The exhibit will be on display from May 15 to May 29, 2009.
Center hours are by appointment only.

  114. David;

I’m pleased to see that the donations button is up. I don’t participate very regularly now because my comments all disappear into spam, but Patricia has graciously posted comments for me every now and then.

However I will endeavour to regularly donate each month. I always seem to be robbing Peter to pay Paul, but will try to give $20 each month. If everyone can donate even a small monthly amount I can see Burn spiralling exponentially ever upwards.

    Bob;

I don’t know if you remember giving me some advice about Holgas? Well I finally took delivery today of a used Holga 120n, and am planning on using it for my new youth project (called “The Kids are Alright”). It turned up with an unused film in it and the 645 insert in.

So I’ve been shooting with an unknown film, don’t know what speed or whether it’s colour or b&w! Now that’s a good random start. Actually I’m more excited about shooting this than when my D300 first arrived!!

It should get some funny looks in the underground bar where I often shoot. Shoot for a while with the D300 and then haul out the Holga!!!

    Thanks for your help Bob!!!

  115. ALL BURNIANS !! ;)))

just got off the phone with David…and he wanted me to pass this message on to EVERYBODY! :)))

DAVID WILL BE BACK ON LINE IN 24 HRS! :)))

Everybody, the brilliant thing about Burn is that WE ARE ALL on the ground floor of this together :)))…And David asked me to tell you all to laugh and celebrate. In fact, he was laughing tonight, cause when he tells you we’re all on the ground floor he means it….he forgot to pay the cell phone bill, and all his stuff is in NC and so he doesnt have internet, so he’s stuck, (and laughing) of all places in NYC and no way (laughing again) to leave a post!…He’s really living like he did when a 18 year old poor freshman (his words) and he’s laughing while we’re talking because it’s like out-of-a=movie and he wants everyone to be of good cheer and that he’ll be right back with everyone, once he gets home……but he’s with y’all and, really, we’re really stretching here….and the gallery is clean and ready and BURN is the talk of the town (all over the PowerHouse last night and tonight at exhibition people talking wanting to be a part) and David laughing ’cause a photographer came up to him and said “I hear Burn was bought by…..”…and David’s laughing, cause how does a rumor like this start and if it were true, he’d have paid his cell phone bill and would have internet and he’d be here with ya’ll…:)))))…that’s the beauty of life and why we all must laugh…

burn is BURNING UP Y’ALL! :))))))

and again, david will be back with you in 24….that’s from Him through my typing fingers and listen carefully, if you listen carefully enough, you’ll hear his deep-throat smokey laughter ringing out from beneath a subway overhead in Brooklyn….can you hear it? ;))))

    hugs evryone,

    david to return ‘SOONEST!”

can we go back to dancing for just a sec?? at the Powerhouse book signing the other night, i once again had the URGE TO DANCE as the music cranked up and it went from reverent book viewing to “let’s party”…now, even after you told me how bad i was at dancing and i even believed how bad i was at dancing, had absolutely zero effect on me wanting to go tribal and show my moves that i had no business trying to show…well, anyway, a woman, who may not want her name connected here with mine, took pity on me and she was such an AMAZING dancer that she made me look like i was not so bad either….i mean she mentored me!!! now i have a new portfolio…CIV, i am TRYING….

I guess I can skip any future dancing lessons. This video shows it all. No need for further instructions!
So far I was only able to handle waltzing in moderate quantaties, but now…
And yes – fresh air! Of course! Had more than enough of it today, plus lots of walking and I even got soaked wet in some nice drizzly warm spring rain! In Germany we say that rain in May makes you beautiful so I stayed outside in the rain a little longer ;-) Not sure if it helps…
Everybody – move outside and enjoy the day!

    THANK YOU !

  163. ALL….

we are now preparing letters to all who applied to the EPF so that you can know one way or the other if you are in the running….

the delay in doing this was caused in part by one finalist voluntarily dropping out because this photographer chose to no longer work on the project for which application was being made…a VERY honest photographer…thanks, you know who you are…..the other reason is of course the sometimes slow task of double checking the credibility and veracity of each applicant and their story, permissions etc etc…….and with one dropping out, we had to go back through quite a few second choices and quite a bit more research…

this whole process has been daunting to say the least…Anton and i literally have had to go through and do all of this by ourselves with not even an intern to help…..no complaints, just a bit of an explanation of why we are a week behind….when the dust settles i hope all of you will be proud of the selection….

i would also like to point out that the judgments of work here has nothing to do with perhaps previous judgments of the same work….i had no clue, nor did Anton, of any previous recognition of work submitted…with so many photographers to view, we did not research each and every one to see what had happened to the essay in previous awards…however, really strong essays often are awarded several grants , so this is not an unlikely scenario at all….as a matter of fact, i cannot remember any strong essay not winning multiple awards….

photographers who are not finalists are still high on our list for future publication and possible commissions…i mean, there was a lot of truly fine work submitted……a lot….mind boggling actually…a real surprise to me….

while obviously i am proud of the EPF and thankful to the donors who made it possible, the EPF is just a small part of what we want to do with BURN….it came up as an interesting possibility on Road Trips and just segued over here….however, at this very moment , i would say i will never do it again…a whole lot of work and a constant defense of doing this whole lot of work and at a personal financial loss to both Anton and i to boot….but, time may change my opinion…as i always say, a good nights sleep and a hot shower remedy many things….i do at least have hot water….

thank you for your patience…..letters should go out within 24 hours…should i call Anton and wake him up????

    cheers, david

  164. Thaddeus Pope

    Dear David,

I’ve received an email confirming that I’m not a finalist, which is of course disappointing, but I’d like to use this opportunity to learn and grow as a photographer, so, if possible, please will you revisit my work and give me a critique of my essay? The essay was called ‘The Disappearing Elephant’. To be honest, I’m having a really hard time with it, so your advice would be invaluable at the moment.

I appreciate that you’re incredibly busy but I hope to hear from you soon.

If possible, please send a response to thaddeuspope@hotmail.com.

    Best Wishes,

    Thaddeus.

exactly at what point should a photographer become a finalist or given a grant???

hmmm, let me think of the criteria you seem to suggest…somebody who is good , but not quite as good as someone else , but better than most , but well not too good but not too bad, well sort of in the middle, but better than middle but not really so good as to make everyone else feel not so good and discouraged???

    please gentlemen , get a grip…

none of these finalists has a book…none have an exhibition set…none are collected…few have agents..they are just among the best of their generation of the ones submitted…..period…i see it that way and apparently so do others….

i just looked at the pictures…i had no idea of their past awards….nobody submitted a bio in advance, and it would not have mattered anyway….if a photographer in a particular generation is making much better work than the others, then they deserve what they deserve….photographers who blame their lack of success on schmoozing and lack of contacts etc etc for sure will never never rise…..

you might not see some of these photographers as emerging , but i sure as hell do…they are certainly not established as per stated above…you might be more emerging than are they..in which case this should give you something to shoot for …any other attitude will take YOU down..not the finalists ..not me….but you…think about it….

i wish i had the funding to give at least 10 more grants…i am working on exactly this and you know it….if you do not know this , then please go back and read at least 20 posts where i have described exactly my goals for you with regard to funding….can i promise it?? no …am i trying like hell, yes….so a bit of support from you gentlemen for whom i am trying to find support would be appreciated…thanks..

and continuing to call it straight…many many thanks for the one comment per essay idea..so simple, obvious, and i just missed it..it works…you have given us the most constructive idea yet….i had struggled for months trying to figure the comment conundrum out ….a very big high five to you for this…

    cheers, david

  166. @ Anton
    Hi!
Haven’t been able to see any of the finalists in IE, Chrome, or Firefox since M.C. Brown.
    Any tips?
Regards and thanks in advance – Richard

  167. David,
You made everything clear! And I like your approach very much.
I am happy to be able to discuss openly about photography, and I appreciate to deal with people that say what they truly believe.
I am in Sicily now, working on my new story, and I’ll be back to London on June 3rd, so I guess I should be able to make it to the Magnum party.
I’d like to take this occasion to thank you very much for your honest and kind reply.
    Thanks very much
    Mimi

  168. MIMI…

i am pleased you will be in London for our little party….please stay in touch with me at david@burnmagazine.org and i will give you the details for the Magnum party…due to a down economy , i imagine our party to be a bit austere this year, but a cold beer is a cold beer….

enjoy Sicily…one of my favorite places and cultures….

    cheers, david

  169. First of all thanks to DAH for his generosity of making burn and EPF.

All that follows is just my opinion but I have to say that or I haven’t the slightest idea of photography, or somebody has chosen the finalists using a scale that says the more unpleasant the better. For me this last essay (American Dreams) is the straw that broke the camels back. In the world there is more than misery, squalor and sordidness. In news photography we already have the problem of considering that “only bad news are news”.

This grant was for every stile of photography and by now I see it was only for “conceptual” (whatever this word means: strange? incomprehensible? ugly?). What happens with documentary photography? I’m sure that between the over 1200 essays submitted to EPF there is people that have make wonderful efforts trying to show something unknown about a place or about people.

Between the eight finalists I have already seen there are only two that I like: “Aftermath” and “Sakhalin”. Many of the rest are still acceptable, but not good enough to be finalists between 1200 essays! Is really this all the best we have?

And I see many people here trying to look smart by attributing overwhelming depth to something that is just superficial.

I said before that may be is that I haven’t the slightest idea of photography, in that case I would be grateful if somebody tried to explain it to me.

    Thanks.

My apologies in advance …please proceed to the BUZZ…

  171. Where has the time gone?

I just turned 40 and so have been rather busy.

I must set aside some time to go through all these entries slowly and deliberately.

    Good luck all you entrants.
