The Tangier Island volunteer fire department goes on a training mission back in 1973. This small sandbar of an island in the Chesapeake Bay, Va. pop. 850, had only narrow paths allowing only minimal motorized traffic. Most people walked or had bikes. The blue crabs of the bay provided their livelihood. Nobody on this island wanted to be photographed. It took me some time to make friends, to gain trust, before I could shoot. The best way to gain trust is to be trustworthy and I gathered everyone on the island who would come to the local school and I showed all the pictures I’d made. For sure we were all friends by the time the story of their lives and culture appeared in NatGeoMagazine, my first published magazine story when I was 29.#tangierisland #kodachrome #chesapeakebay
