ALL …

well, maybe I should specify what I was about to write when I got interrupted after the word “networking” a while back.

I am not sure if “networking” does have a bad sound to it or not. DAH’s questionmarks sure seem to point at such a possibility. But I did not mean it in a negative way at all.

I admitt it was not my intention to just post this one word. Actually I was not aware of the fact that I posted it at all before I saw DAH’s response.

As I said, my answer would have been going along with some others here, meaning, that if one’s intention as a photographer lies on the “human rights” path , then I am very sure this summercourses would be an excellent help. If you did separate workshops for all that is being offered in this one package, then it would surely end up much more expensive. Alone for the fact that you would probably have to travel all over the world to “find” worthy workshops. If at all.

The other point was in fact about “networking”. While the photographer should be concentrating on the photographs, there is a whole lot of things that have to be done before you have a finished project, a hanging exhibition, a printed book out there. Before and after the act of taking photographs. Of course you can find all the information in the internet if you really know what you are looking for, but … Do we all know what we need before we have messed it up the first or second attempt to get it “good”?
I would assume that a place like NYU, where you physically spent the summer with a lot of other interesting people and experts, where information and knowledge could be such a densly woven carpet, that this could really help enormously … And not just one way either. Everyone of us does have pieces of information important to others. Networking is a give&take.

Thinking it this way I would even dare to state that the program at NYU is cheap. Yeah. Bearing in mind that I myself could not afford it right now.

Actually I say this because I did witness the benefit of a similar situation once in the US. It did not have to do with photography but with theater, but that actually does not matter. I was staying shortly at a highschool in North Carolina and joined the drama class during that time. Some crazyness made us decide to perform “Cabaret”, and we had 6 weeks from the day of decision until the curtain call. 6 weeks! We only had afternoons & nights to work on it and needed a trained orchestra, to learn the songs (and I cannot sing – still cannot), come up with the set, the choreography, LEARN the dances, come up with the costumes, oh yeah, and there was some text to memorize too …. It was wild, crazy and probably the riskiest decision ever. But it not only worked out, it worked out PERFECTLY! Why? Because we had a great team! If one person would have had to work that all out by her- or himself it would have taken a year. But … it was … so much more than a group of individuals: it was the first time I witnessed a team-flow, and the stacks were high. I have never seen this again, but it taught me something about getting a lot of people together who are not necessarily good in doing the same things, but who are connected by a vision and a positive attitude (that is important!) despite the facts that all the odds were against us.

It taught me something for life. And I will forever be grateful for that experience. I have seen it working. I know it works. But you have to be able to combine organisation with a realistic view on things. Yes, “realistic” is actually enough. 6 weeks were not impossible, as everybody outside the group was shouting, 6 weeks were only extremely short and therefore had to be well organised. And everybody had not only to do his/her own job but to keep an eye open on other people who might have a problem to solve.

This team was extremely huge: 60 people. I think I will never need such a big team for anything again. But even though the “flow” is probably easier to reach the smaller the group (I think), I have only had it as an individual since then. And I am still looking for the team mates for whatever vision lies on my(our) paths. I think I would have a higher chance to find them in such places as the NYU program – and that is basically what I meant with “networking”. I personally do not use it in a negative sense but in a highly positive one. Sorry if I confused some people.

BTW the same goes for the article that Panos was so kind to post for me while I had no internet connection. I read the reactions to it a while back! WHEW!!! Sorry for that, but that was not my intention at all to blow any negativity into the air. Common guys, why are you all photographers? Just because the sun shines? That cannot be!!! I do not believe it!!! Not after what I read here!!!!! So pleeeeeze …. Gimme a break, ok? :o))

I read these kind of things in search of facts. The negativity of it does not reach me at all, so I did not really pay attention to it. But what interested me was the discussion about Copyrights and Stockimages, which in my oppinion was interesting, and … well … if markets really change in whatever field I am in, I am always interested in knowing it. Not to run away, but … maybe to run ahead? Just a thought. Even if an article is extremely negative, there might be some interesting thought in it. Just because something is negative I do not have to be. Just because I eat sweets, I do not have to be (sweet) :o)

Sorry for the confusion though, sometimes I feel I do cause a lot of it here just because I usually do not take things that literally. I only noticed AFTER causing the mess and that is kind of annoying. If one comment calls for 10 more just to amend the damage caused (but not intended – NEVER intended) then maybe I should just be more of a lurker anyway. It is sooooooo much easier to talk, edit or discuss when you are sitting eye to eye … At least for me. And here I am again talking about the advantages of this new NYU program … :o))))

If I change my path in the course of this year … I’d definitively try to apply there 2010.

A big, big POSITIVE hug to everyone out there,
Lassal

I dont really know what to say. It means a lot to me that you would be willing to take time out of your schedule and offer me a chance to talk with you over the phone, let alone offer your own apartment and time to mentoring students such as myself. That is not a quality that you will find in very many people.

I guess what I am trying to say is thank you. Any opportunity to talk with you whether it be over the phone, in person, or other means, I am incredibly grateful for.

Thank you so much,

Jonathan

99% of the people i write to here are people i met right here online…i have since met many in person, but the original contact was through the keyboard…

most of my mentoring is free, but i also do workshops where there is a tuition…the only thing perhaps beneficial about the tuition workshops is that they guarantee my time at a particular time…and many workshops are by nature expensive to produce, therefore necessitating tuition….however, polite and persistent photographers who really need help can always get it from me by just buying me a beer…

in Austin you should contact first Lance Rosenfield and Dave Keenan…both are former students of mine…Lance is just one terrific photographer and friend and writes occasionally here….Dave started the Austin Center of Photography recently….obviously i cannot volunteer the time of others, but both of these men i am sure would at least send you in the right direction…i do not have the contact info for the ACP right this sec, but i am sure you can track it down…both Lance and Dave are friends , so find Dave first and he will send you to Lance…

por supuesto , por nada…

It feels truly great to get a response from you and have access to you through this magazine…when I started reading your blog (the one that predated BURN) I actually thought you would only respond to those whom you had met before in person or had attended your workshops. It’s really amazing thus to actually experience your commitment to an open community where anyone can really participate. Many thanks for this space.

Yes I do live in Austin and would welcome names of photographers who would be willing to mentor me for free. Notice the word free. I have already ran across photographers who would mentor others for a fee. I am not sure if by charging a fee the relationship would still qualify as mentoring… anyways… I am not making a judgement on the act of charging a fee – we all need to make ends meet… it would simply mean I would not be able to afford it. I would be willing to work with others as well…I am in such a beginning stage though that it would probably has to be someone who is barely starting to explore the field for he/she to benefit from my documentary photography experience.

I would give it more thought to the idea of opening a space where people can find other to work together.
Now you probably connect people by geographic location which makes the most sense to facilitate personal interaction – however – based on people’s interest it might make more sense for people across the globe to connect…like you said a lot of this already happens organically. If I have more concrete ideas I’ll share them with you.

Gracias nuevamente.
