Even without mentioning Santa Cruz, most surfers would be able to tell where the photo was taken. It’s a classic signature angle from the cliff, where viewing is excellent.

Meanwhile it’s indian summer here on Hatteras.

Gordon, I suspect that David was probaby sitting atop the cliffs that rise straight out of the ocean at Steamer Lane. Also, thanks to the close proximity of the Humboldt current to shore, Santa Cruz is in the cold water surfing zone. The waters off Oregon and Washington tend to be warmer than in many places in Northern California – maybe not Santa Cruz, but in the Eureka-Arcata (which has the coolest average temperature of any Lower 48 city) area for sure.

So, you’re on a pier, or a low flying helicopter? Cool photo.
I can see you’re reluctant to head east. Well, if you keep riding the coast far enough north you could always hop on a ferry to Vancouver Island. I’ll give you the two dollar tour and introduce you to some cool back to the land folks on Lasqueti Island.

When I was in high school, my parents moved me from the north CA coast community of Eureka, which I loved, to Sacramento, which I hated. Every chance I got, which was nowhere near enough, I would head for Santa Cruz and usually wind up at Steamer Lane, sometimes Pleasure Point.

I still dream about it.
