Till Life

[ EPF 2014 SHORTLIST ]

This series is inspired by the skyscapes of William Eggleston. I wanted to capture the still, vast blue hues of the skies and the seas (as the sky’s reflection). Whilst imagining the serenity of capturing such a minimalistic subject, I noticed the images would often be disturbed by various events. Birds flying through, a plane cruising over or the sun, demanding all attention by beaming its rays directly in my lens. I became fascinated by these disturbances and pretty soon they became the subject of this series. The intruders of the still life, became part of the other wordly skyscapes.

  1. I like the series and the look, so I hate to get caught up in the statement, but can’t help noticing that the line about capturing “the still, vast blue hues of the skies and the seas…” conflicts with what I see in the photos, which is that the blues have been seriously desaturated. So maybe you don’t like the hues of the sky so much as what you can do with them in a photograph?

Nothing wrong with that (if that’s the case), I think most of us do something similar. It’s often those slight adjustments to color that allow the viewer to focus on the composition we are trying to get him or her to see. And I think it works in this case. A realistically blue sky would overwhelm these photos.

  2. I like it!. All pictures seem very simple, one by one, but I like the whole set. How the elements disturb the sky or the sea… Maybe I would leave out of the set the one with the man and the antenna…

    cheers

  3. By reckoning, I think for the most part you succeeded at your goal very well. I LOVED the airplane shots. Like Cesar, to me personally the man with the antenna was rather jarring and seemed to be out of place and step aside aside from the theme. Yet, you did state “the images would often be disturbed by various events.” This was definitely a disturbance. Jarred though I was, I see it as part of your art.

  4. Great idea ( lets start with that ), also some captivating moments and now the downer , I really don’t like the blue ( and sometimes the light with that ) in a % of your photo’s and that is unfortunate .
Also the order of how the photo’s are placed birds , plane , red sky and again , so to say it roughly , it feels too 1-2-3 .

My favorit is 15 and I kinda wished you went more with that wilder , more adventurous freedom .
It is there , I can see that , but it needs to come out more .

    Thank you for posting .

  5. I like this. It’s not about the hues to me. It’s about presence. Stillness. And interruption of that peaceful moment that is so fleeting. How rare it is to hang on to the moment. Something always disrupts it.
