The deadline for the Emerging Photographer Fund grant is officially moved to April 1, 2009….
This is a two week extension from the original March 15 deadline date….
The Emerging Photographer Fund is a $10,000 grant to be awarded to a photographer to continue a personal body of work….
Initiated by BURN , the EPF operates under the non-profit status of the Magnum Cultural Foundation .
Details for applying for this grant can be viewed in the upper right hand corner of BURN….
Finalists will be announced on or before May 1, 2009. The recipient of this grant will be announced on or before June 1, 2009..
PLEASE do not send private e-mails regarding this grant nor ask procedural questions on your entry submitted through Photoshelter. The high volume of entries makes it impossible for me to answer.
If you follow the very simple guidelines for entry, your work will be received and viewed and considered carefully.
You may ask any last minute questions of me right HERE in the comments box….

1st april? is this some kind of joke (hohoho)
::::GOOD LUCK ALL::::
DAVID B…
yea, i thought of that as soon as i posted..ok, april 2….i look forward to editing with you soonest…
cheers, david
looking forward to it david… your inspiration has been invaluable since we met on lightstalkers.. road trips and now burn have helped solidify ideas and i think i know hwo things will work now..
i keep having dreams about the book and editing which hopefully are prophetic in some way.. previsualizing the narrative and how it may look.
it´s amazing how sitting down with prints in real time throws up new ideas and methods.. and conversation with friends has bought the idea further still..

The submission guidelines are very straightforward, save for a photoshelter url (for those, like me, unfamiliar). Google searches yield many photoshelters. Would you indicate the specific site? Thanks much, T.W.
DAH
EPF question: one thing has been bugging me… in the details for applying you ask for images to be 1600px on longest side, but i can’t see how you could view them at any bigger than the small postcard within Photoshelter, unless you download them? should we check the download permission box on each image?
cheers
Sam
TIM
if you go to http://pa.photoshelter.com/ you can create a free account and then go from there, following the submission guidelines.
SAM…
i doubt i would download any picture just to see it larger…i think the viewing size is just fine for this preliminary whittling down of the entries…my goal now is to make a short list of finalists..these finalists will then build a Blurb book for the judging by a jury of peers which will yield our EPF recipient….
cheers, david
I wish I had more substantial material… I’d put something together.
I look forward to seeing the work that fits in the finals, if that is possible?
Ity took a bit to figure out how to put phots in the lightbox but Im all set now David. God, it was dumb of me to even ask.
JASON…
we will figure out some way to show the work of all the finalists….just as i did last year….
cheers, david
David,
Photoshelter website says no more free accounts are being offered :(
I can’t afford a paid one ! What should I do ??
that´s a real blow… my free account appears to still be working… for now.
as with the stock sale side of phot shel.. they do change things without notice..
perhaps a lightstalkers gallery could work if not Photshelt?
@ Vatsala
Are you sure? I just created a free account a few seconds ago. 150 MB storage. Doesn’t seem to be time limited as far as I can see.

I was having a look at the road trip site today and I couldn’t find last year’s finalists.
Some help will be much appreciated.
Thanks, Zisis

Sorry for the silly question, guys, but I am not familiar with Photoshelter.
In the GALLERY display, description is limited to 2000 characters. In the LIGHTBOX display, description is limited to 500 characters only.
Just to make it perfectly clear, the limit of 500 characters does not depend on the type of account, right?
thanks in advance!
anderson
erica,
thank you for the links!
questions from someone on LS..
1) In the lightbox view, how do you get the captions to show if they are already there in the photos, and can be seen in the gallery view?
2) Is there a way to turn off the big copyright notice across the images in lightbox view?
strike question 2..the answer is yes, for that you go to my website – image security – watermark NO – save
I too just sorted a free account. I used to have a paid one but needed to cut costs after move back to Europe nearly wiped me out.
Will upgrade in the near future. It’s well worth it.
DAH,
In connection with Sam’s question from above:
I have a set of 1000pix-wide files that are ready (had them prepared for display on my website.)
Would they be adequate for the purposes of the pre-screening or do I have to rescan my negatives to 1600pix?
ZISKAR…
you are right, the 2008 finalists were actually not shown on Road Trips but on my own website home page and they are no longer there….i had forgotten we pulled them off…in any case, they were up there for a solid year and just recently removed….however, we will create a 2009 category here on BURN for the finalists..
answering my own question 1)..it seems that for the captions to show up in the lightbox they have to be entered as IPTC info (either in your original upload or in ARCHIVE)..if you enter them in GALLERY, they don’t transfer over. Or so I was told..haven’t confirmed it yet.
And 500 character limit in lightbox, yes.
what is the resolution supposed to be for the 1600 px images?
thks
karen – it would not matter i guess although most screens resolution is 72 dpi.. so maybe i could suggest that?
Thodoris
“Would they be adequate for the purposes of the pre-screening or do I have to rescan my negatives to 1600pix?”
I learned the hard way to scan at the highest res possible and keep a master file. Then I make the different sizes as I need them from it. I like an 800 pixel image for screen use.
KAREN…
resolution does not matter..if you want to make them consistent use 72 ppi…but 1600 pixels is 1600 pixels any way you look at it….
David
Is it possible to change few photos from my lightbox before the deadline even if I’ve already shared the box with epf?
j
Robert…
I appreciate the logic of scanning-as-big-as-you-can in the first place, but when I was doing those scans I had a few hundred negatives to go through from this project and a not-all-that-fast scanner. It seemed a good idea at the time to scan and work on smallish files, but it has come back to bite me…
JUKKA…
yes, please make changes right up until the final deadline of April 1
Hi DAH,
it has to be 1600 pixels, or AT LEAST 1600 pixels …longest side ?
KATHARINA…
1600 pixels…
DAH,
thanks a lot ! :)
Hey David, is there a problem if the photoshelter account isn’t in y name?…
Thodoris
i’m sure when you scanned all those negs it WAS the right thing to do,
now you can focus on 10 of your best and scan them big, first,
you might end up feeling it was all for a reason
as it will force you to be extra ruthless and focused
on the other hand it could totally bum you out as you must now
spend the next week rescanning negs
either way, it’ll be worth it
and you know that,
it don’t stop,
Yeeee haaaawwww!
Hey David/Anton–are we supposed to get a confirmation email to make sure that you have received our submissions, or are we just supposed to bug you about it?
Hey Erica,
Thanks a lot for your answer on my 500 characters question!
Best,
anderson
Mr. Harvey, first and foremost, thank you for making this grant possible. It is truly appreciated by all. I have a question concerning the blurb book. Does the content have to be solely from one’s grant project proposal or can you have other work in it as well? Looking at the deadlines, it is best for me to start working on this now. D
CHRIS…
as i wrote above, we cannot send e-mails to everyone who submitted…if you submitted properly, we have it….
DEL LUKE…
do not do anything regarding a blurb book unless you are a finalist….the blurb books will be how the finalists are judged…however you want to present yourself to the jury is what you should have in this book…so you may do as you please, but probably best just to have your grant proposal work in there so the jury can see your idea and the project you want to continue…
MIGUEL..
i do not understand your question….
DAH
Will the other key dates (May 1st, June 1st) also be pushed? My experience with Blurb is that it might take more than a month to get a nice book from them.
Hope you will enjoy Spain (jealous here).
Nacho
well, I have created an agency and because of that my photoshelter account is on it’s name. the lightbox is created there (with my copyright). but I can always create a free account just for EPG if you prefer.
if possible and you have time please check www-via-visuals.com I have just put it online right now!!
feedback from everyone most welcomed (and bug reports also :)
best to all
sorry, http://www.via-visuals.com not www-via-visuals.com
MIGUEL…
i suggest that the photographs presented are in your name….
NACHO…
i did not know it took that long quite frankly…hmmmm, will i might have to have the finalists judged by April 15 or so…that should give everyone enough time..besides, i think i can push blurb a bit on this one too…
Ok David, done :)
best
DAH
I am not saying it has to take that long but it might, taking into account the time to prepare it, getting it from Blurb, sending it to you. I would recommend finalists not to assume Blurb will ship in the 5/6 business days they mention in their website. My experience having printed a few dummies with them is that it usually takes quite longer. Then sometimes there are photos that are not printed well etc. and you want to redo, so I think that having some room for maneuver will be good for the finalists.
Cheers,
Nacho
Hi there. I just now noticed the blurb about the EPF on the main page. I sent an email, asking if you were able to see my lightbox, before I saw this. I apologize. I followed the guidelines, so I’m just going to assume that all is well.
Thank you for the chance to submit!
Joshua
Hi!
I would like to know if I possibly won the award, would there be difficulty in getting the Blurb book to you if I will be out of the country from April 22 through May 31st?
Thanks,
Juliana
juliana–
really superb work on your ‘lap dancers’ project.
k.
Ok, this might be a silly question but I was wondering how you define an ‘emerging photographer’.
I have experience as a newspaper photographer at a major paper but I’m now just starting a freelance career, I have a lot of published work at the paper but never in magazines, books, etc.
So I don’t know if my newspaper experience disqualifies me from being ‘emerging’ and I want to be fair to newer photographers but at the same time I feel like I’m starting over in the business since I’m very new to the freelance world.
