one of the worst ideas i have ever had was starting BURN three days before Christmas!!  what a bad idea….but, when i get passionate about something, it is hard to hold me back….so, thus it was that BURN was launched just as i was getting on an airplane and heading for Colorado to see my mother who has no internet modum…..hmmmm, and i am here to help emerging photographer’s think??  well, please know that i do not always do the right thing…however, here we are and i just want to take a minute to take stock….

first of all, i want to thank the readers here for submitting so much work for publication on BURN…some of you may not realize, but so far,  all of the work published on BURN has come from you….and this morning i was looking at what we have ready to roll and the next weeks and months are going to be exciting indeed….at first, i was really worried about having daily updates on BURN…i could not imagine it…now, i could do two posts per day easy !!  we have lots of content coming in and “the bar” is going to get higher and higher …

the internet audience is indeed a fickle one and an impatient one as well….you have so many choices out there and you want what you want NOW….i get that, but i also ask you to be a little bit patient with BURN…i was getting judged after 6 days, when i could see that to really “get” BURN ,in all of its manifestations, would take 6 months….one sentence is not a paragraph and one paragraph is not a book….i surely would not want to be judged on my first 6 days of anything…..photo essays or relationships or anything!!  but, i will take the criticism because this  is fair enough…i have put myself “out there”, so that is just the way it goes…so expect more flaws, but expect some revelations as well…

i mean, BURN right now is just me editing, writing etc and Anton Kusters managing most of the tech stuff….i have been in about three locations since BURN started and Anton has been in either Belgium or Japan…so, neither of us can possibly get any sleep because of the time zones…and both of us are shooting as well…sitting by a computer editing is not what i envision for life…i am a working photographer and i will stay a working photographer….my number one priority photographically is my next book….and i hope you will see that this is important for me to be a photographer first and an editor second…but, my work is not published here on BURN…..yours is…..and that is the way it will be..

my choices for essays and singles are just that…my choices….choice comes from either something i really really like  OR  photographs that i think will invite discussion….and there is certainly no lack of discussion!!  i like photojournalism….i like conceptual photography….frankly, i like whatever is truly compelling….again, the work published here has come from the pool of submissions from you, or from photographers i have mentored online or in workshops…..i was thinking at first to cast a wider net and i will  do that  too, but things are coming in so fast and the essays are getting so good, that it is a full time job just to view it all….

plus, we will start soonest the “Work in Progress” section for  developing essays…i will take on 5 new photographers for this and work with them a month or so and then select 5 more…i predict many of you will be hanging around “Work in Progress” over all other sections…i will continue to profile  so called iconic photographers as a way of mixing it all up on the same pages…not only Magnum photographers as some would expect, but photographers from all agencies , galleries , etc etc…this is my nature…i do this in my workshops…my student show always follows the show of one of the greats…this honors say an Alessandra Sanguinetti or a Eugene Richards, but gives a special cred to the emerging photographers who will soon become the “greats”….this is my whole point of mentoring….to discover the next great photographer OR to provide a meaningful way of making photography an integral  part of your life…

your ideas and your work are BURN…..i am just a moderator….BURN may be likened to “talk radio”…participation is the message….as you know , i have ideas for funding beyond the Emerging Photographer Fund grant….to give some of you the funding you need to finish your projects and ideally to create from “scratch” content specific for  BURN…it would seem that  a financial recession would not be the ideal time to do this…i think the opposite…sponsors are looking to the net…content is king….for a fraction of what sponsors are spending now, we can give them THE place to be…..and photographers rights are always paramount in my mind and my life philosophy….

if you tap into your passion, if you create something special,  and if that appears here, then indeed the audience will become the producers……we have a chance for the ultimate collaboration…a chance to invent something…joining something can be terrific…inventing something is the ultimate…

your thoughts???

  1. Seems I’m the first?
Well, I would like to thank you David and Anton for your work and your commitment, and to offer us (trying to-) emerging photographers this platform of expression!
Just can’t wait to see what’s coming next, I rss’d this site since the first day and come to visit as soon as I check my rss-feed. It’s always a good surprise to see the work presented here (I’ll send more too!) and I like the mix of known and emerging photog, it’s a nice way to help “youngers”…
So I wish BURNmag a long life full of wonderful surprises and again, thank you!
(PS) sorry for any english mistakes…

  2. Loving it so far.

I have to say the one thing I miss is a place to just shoot the shit. Yeah, that can be done within the comments of the essays and singles, but I feel that isn’t fair to the photographers. So maybe there can be a place for a bit of a more free ranging discussion with maybe one of the old time great DAH blog style musings/topics to kick it off now and then. Just a thought.

Blessings for Burn in the year of the Ox,

    CP

  3. It’s crazy to think that BURN is only a month old! I’m just amazed that two jet-setters with tons of other stuff going on have consistently been able to build, update, and moderate this mag on a daily basis while running to catch the next train, plain, or automobile…you guys are insane!

I can’t wait to see what BURN looks like 6 months, a year from now…everybody better tighten up and get their work in, because I imagine that very soon we will be backed up with submissions and the bar will keep getting raised higher.

Here’s to all the contributors who made BURN happen in its first month; you are all pioneers! And brave souls, too…

The dialogue on BURN has been interesting to follow; sometimes brilliant, sometimes heated, sometimes way out of line…but somehow we always manage to calm down, come to a little better understanding, even become friends with people we have sparred with. The volatility, though sometimes annoying for those of us who just want to discuss photography, keeps things interesting. I would, however, like to encourage everyone, newcomers and old-timers alike, to maintain civility and respect when in a public forum such as this. It’s easy to hide behind a computer screen, especially under an anonymous alias, and hurl aspersions at people you may never meet. But, as many of us have come to experience, the virtual community here is becoming more and more of a real community, and you may one day find yourself face-to-face with someone you unfairly trashed online…not only that, but if we want to have iconic photographers and major photo editors participating and visiting BURN, we can’t allow the dialogue to be dragged into the gutter. These guys are in the major leagues, not high school, and they don’t have time for that kind of crap. ‘Nuff said.

I’m really excited about what is happening here. BURN is already an innovator in the field of online photography, and as it matures and develops, it has the potential to truly influence the future of photography. Or at least we can all believe that it does! Maybe it’s the new presidential administration giving us all hope within the midst of trouble and turmoil–I don’t know what it is, but it feels like BURN has the potential to be a phoenix rising from the detritus of failing print magazines and newspapers and shrinking budgets. 2009 is going to be a year of restructuring and lean living for almost everyone, but those who position themselves well and get a clear handle of where this boat is heading in the 21st century will be most able to take advantage of the turning tide, once it eventually turns. Let’s hope all of us are that fortunate.

Once again, hats off to David and Anton for the vision, savvy, and work ethic to get this thing going. Now it’s time for the rest of us to step up and share the load a little…

  4. oh yeah… i’m loving every second of it.
people close to me say i’m crazy, i haven’t slept properly since i was over in NYC where BURN got BORN, but hey… i’ve always been the person to go one hundred percent for something.

and i’m loving the way BURN is evolving little by little through its audience, its content… it really is not only for emerging photographers but it is an emerging place as well…

i’m BURNing the midnight oil for this project wherever i may be, giving all i got, and shooting at the same time… i want to be a photographer first and foremost, and that is what i’ll return to “soonest”, but this “step” is a necessary one, for me to grow and for me to be able to give back some of my knowledge to help others emerge… and one which i have not regretted taking for one instant… if anything, it has learned me so much about photography, photographers, projects, visual language a lot more than anything else recently…

    and humbled me. really.

  5. Burn, Daddy, Burn! :))))

in this year of the ox (a year of prosperity and renewal), I count Burn as one of the great new year’s blessings…and so happy to be here :)))…

and I know a photographer who has an essay called ‘year of the ox’;)))…am working on that photographer now to show something with time :)))))))….

i’m with Charles, a place to muse or shoot the shit or rant or ramble is still a great idea…maybe that’s where a section “shoot the shit with harvey” or ‘shoot the shit with a shooter’ could be :)))))….

David, as those picky Vulcans say, ‘may Burn live long and prosper!’ :)))

    running
    hugs

    b

  6. oh and about the “evolving” part: we have BURN “version 1.5” and BURN “version 2.0” lined out already… thanks to all comments and feedback and careful observations and constant self-reflection and discussion….

    we’re all in for a treat, 2009 will BURN…

    ’nuff said :-)

  7. hey charles… i might be mistaken, but is that not precisely what “dialogue” here is for?

it just so happens that david hasn’t really posted a free ranging discussion topic just yet, but, as Yoda would say:

    “coming soon, it will!”

    :-)

  8. CHARLES….

this is supposed to be that place…where we are right now in Dialogue…where i usually ask the audience a question…for some reason, most readers just do not know that or see it that way…the pieces under Diaglogue are the same things i would write about under the old “road trips”..BUT, there have not been as many stories here, nor have i had the time to do as many, since i have a whole new editing job…you are right, the singles and essays are not the place for chit chat…i did put the story on Steve here, but i think i will create another whole new category called “Profiles” and keep this for THIS…

i thought of blocking the essays and singles for comments to force everyone to chat here on Dialogue, but many reject that idea…there is no clear consensus on what should be blogable and what should not….some want the essays and singles to be comment free, others love it….what do you think??

anyway Charles, shoot away!! let’s see what happens….

    cheers, david

  9. DAVID

still laughing about our X-mas launch idea… i remember the phonecall we had as if it were yesterday…
the X-mas launch… whichever one of us came up with that one, still owes me a beer :-))))

    cheers,

  10. David and Anton, our gratitude to you guys is impossible to put into words. And all the behind-the-scenes folks who worked with DAH in person at BURN’s “birth” in his Brooklyn loft at the beginning of December 2008, not to mention those who offered ideas and assistance on Road Trips, in emails, phone calls and even via webcam (David McG). This has truly been a communal effort but the hardest workers are David and Anton. Without them, BURN would have just remained another great idea floating around in space. Those guys are DOERS!

As one of the early contributors to BURN, I feel incredibly honored and humbled to have had my essay published here. As more submissions come in and the bar gets raised higher and higher, I am going to be VERY glad that I got in on the ground floor when expectations were not out of sight. Sometimes it pays to get your shit together quickly!

I believe that what BURN will become is beyond our wildest dreams. Just look at what’s already happened in only one month! Hang on tight, my friends, for this is going to be an AMAZING ride!!!

    in gratitude
    Patricia

  11. Ha! Yes, I see it clearly now…..

No, I think dialogue on the photos/essays is a good idea. Yes, there will be criticism, sometimes warranted, other times off base, but I think if one can make the cut at BURN, then the skin needs to thicken (or already has) to a degree. The greatness of Burn is the ability to get feedback from your community, and the photos do sometimes spark discussion that is relevant and wouldn’t have come about otherwise. I say keep it as it is.

Now it’s time to go walk the dog (he has his own opinions about this blogging thing).

    All the best,

    CP

  12. DAVID/ ANTON,

I think that BURN after just one month looks as good as we/you had imagined on that rainy day in New York… You made it happen so much respect my friends! Key question that some of us still wrestle with is how to best help support on-going the load of work that this represents for the two of you. Clearly, we do not want to kill either one of you with either logistics or the editing work that will keep becoming a bigger job over time as BURN grows so I wonder how to best move forward in that regard. I think that Lassal made that suggestion before but I have no doubt that many would be prepared to contribute even small amounts to maybe at least fund a webmaster or whatever else would be needed to keep this place going… We joked about the T-shirts etc but I do think there was also there some ideas on how to provide some funding to support the magazine….

The one area that I know we had talked and that I miss but that I know will start very soon is the more educational part for young photographers that I am sure will be the “work in progress” section. We had talked about a section with “behind the scene” perspective on the essays, maybe a place where edits are kept over time from the very first one to what eventually is the final essay. I do not think that there is anything like that anywhere on the web and I see so much learning opportunities for young photographers. It cannot get any better than that for an on-line workshop really, even if nothing will ever replace the face to face discussions. In the spirit of on-line mentoring, I also wonder if there is an opportunity to enroll some readers and use their talents for caching and guidance. Tom is a former editor so maybe there could be an section for anyone who is looking for advice there that Tom could help manage. Bob beyond being a great photographer could provide perspectibe about the text, the writing of an essay, etc etc…

Very final point….we all have to make BURN become ours…. it seems to me that some may be intimidated by the more formal format and this is why you have had some suggesting to have a section for general free ranging discussions… I know that this is what Dialogue is meant to be so this maybe a question of time but, with a great looking more formal magazine, if ever the topic of discussion proposed on Dialogue is a serious one, some may shy away from general tchat… Now, some may argue that we do no need these maybe more superficial tchating here…maybe but I think this also helps cement our litle (not so little these days) community….

Anyway, again, kudos to both and you know that many of us are grateful for what you are doing and always here to help to the extent that we can….

    Cheers,

    Eric

  13. CHARLES,

By the way, what are your plans these days now that CYPHER has been published? Are you working on another long term project… I am a real fan and keep going back to your book…

    Cheers,

    Eric

  14. I like the feel of Burn for a number of reasons, I think that it is “broken up” in a very good way! In this I find myself able to stop in, see a great image, image series, or profile…read a few comments and move on. I think it’s important that one does not have to “sift” backwards to get the giest of a coversation/thread.

This site “moves” much faster than Road Trip, I like the idea of coming to Burn and seeing a new direction, a new topic, a new “category” opened up almost daily!

In short the layout/organization of Burn lets one take in the photography and writing on a day to day basis, while still preserving the “archive” and any ongoing conversations from the last “dialogue”.

Keep us on our toes….I look forward to seeing more!

    Cheers, Jeremy

  15. I was just about to reply here when up popped “Work in Progress”!!

I too can hardly believe that Burn is only one month old: it seems so mature and purposeful. Thank you everyone who has contributed to it’s success and especially to David and Anton.

I’m sure that David is not just making this up as he goes along – he is a man with a plan!

    Mike.

  16. Burn away, Mr. Harvey. The magazine is a gem. It’s a magical mystery tour of humankind’s wonderful weirdness. What a gift you have brought us. I’ll say no more for what more can I say?

  17. I’m going to be hanging out at home for a while and taking a break from my shooting projects because I may have come up with a solution for the focusing difficulties associated with HD video on DSLR’s.

Let me work up a model and report back later over the coming days and weeks. If it works I will manufacture the device myself. So anyone shooting with one of these cameras, feel free to let me know and I’ll keep you in the picture.

    Paulyman.

  18. ERIC…

you can get as informal as you want anywhere you want..but yes, “Dialogue” is more appropriate space…i think you are right in a way…the more elegant layout makes us feel a bit more serious or more formal as you say…hmmmmmm, i have to think about that one…let’s see how it goes when i start writing more stories here on Dialogue..asking more questions….i think 90% of it is just the fact that i have not written much here…

now, how about the customer service operation though?? you asked for Work in Progress and within 10 minutes you had Work in Progress…anything else i can help you with sir???

    cheers, david

  19. Thanks Eric. I have something in mind that right in my own neighborhood. But I haven’t laid any groundwork for it yet so I’m a bit hesitant to talk about it. I’m also going back through my archives and working with a young designer to put together another book. It’s a portrait book, though loosely. Ex-girlfriends, party people, famous musicians, family, travels, etc. Pulling it all in and see what sticks and if I can pull it off. But my next biggest project is the birth of Felix in a couple of weeks. That should take up some time for a bit. Fortunately my wife gets 5 months leave, and I have the luxury of doing as I please (neither of us are too stressed about $ at the moment fortunately). So will take the opportunity to spend some time with new life. And believe me, I will be taking a few pictures!

    How’s your boxing project going?

    Take care,

    CP

  20. CHARLES,

I did not know about the baby. Congrats my friend…It will chamge your life for sure… I will wait to hear more about your project…Boxing is going well… Still shooting for a few more weeks before I head back to Europe. I will keep you posted. Cheers, Eric

  21. PATRICIA…

the picture you sent me today of you in the mirror just killed me!! as in just killer photograph!! great… thanks…

i want to incorporate that and maybe one other into your essay…but, it is your choice… i just make strong recommendations as you well know!!!

    cheers, david

  22. DAVID,

you are the FEDEX amn to use your own words… I should have known that you always deliver :):):):). Your bold little brother seems to be on to something in Japan…. This is exciting…

    Eric

  23. David, I trust your eye, my friend. Add the mirror and whatever other additional photo caught your eye. As I said via email, you can use the mirror shot as the cover photo if you think that would work. Want to keep that edit nice and tight!

    Patricia

  24. CHARLES…

congratulations on little Felix!!! yea, forget the other stuff for awhile….the other stuff is other stuff…give us a good baby picture…i mean, a good picture, a very good picture, that just happens to be your baby…get it??? ok you got it, your new assignment from BURN…a “my new baby” picture that is not a my new baby picture….

    cheers, david

  25. Burn’s looking great! I’m really looking forward to seeing how the Work In Progress section develops. I think it’s going to be a great education in putting together a valuable body of work.

For an insight into the editing process, will we get to see the ‘contact sheets’? Eric’s ‘behind the scenes’ idea is something I’d also particularly like to see.

Thanks for making the effort, David and Anton.

    All the best,

    Andrew

  26. Nice! One very successful month down and many more to come, congratulations! Haven’t been able to spend much time here due to life… but have been lurking around and checking in occasionally. Its great to see things moving ahead so and expanding so rapidly. Well done David and Anton!

    James

  27. I have nothing but praises for You David and Anton. It is enormous what you are doing for photographers and photography and I think the magazine looks brillant.

    My best, valery

  28. I also posted this under Steve McCurry…this version has a couple of additional lines.

    A CALL FOR PEACE.

After seeing the comments Panos made here yesterday, especially those knocking photographers who go off to India to copy Steve McCurry, I opened my copy of South Southeast, the book that first introduced me to Steve.

That book was published in 2000, AFTER my fifth annual trip to India. I discovered Steve thru my visits to India, not vice versa. I also rediscovered my love for photography thru spending time in India, not vice versa.

I am writing this not to argue with Panos but to show how easy it is for all of us to jump to conclusions and make judgements, usually incorrect ones about each other, photography, life. What is more difficult to do is to quietly listen and keep an open mind.

How great it is that we have each found a passion for photography within ourselves. Whether that passion was ignited thru India or drugs or the smile of a baby, there is no wrong or right. This is our own unique path in life.

We have come together here from different backgrounds, from different parts of the world, with different interests and ways of expressing ourselves. I know in my heart that the intention for burn is that all of us add our small spark to this flame and make it burn brighter, not to try to extinguish each other!

    Let peace prevail on burn.
    Best wishes to all.

  29. ok, Charles ! :)))))

took another snap (after dinner) with dima of Cypher….’cause, like im an idiot and didnt think that the G-5 Cam would make a mirror image of the book title….so, for you:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/73821181@N00/3229482541/sizes/o/

Y’ALL, Charles I love this sweat-flip’d mop book…like it’s way sick, and an absolutely partner to Touch Me….same prick of light and brilliant use of flash, the dazzle of the mazzle….like, Old-San J-B-boy slammin’ tokyo, the PrinceoftheDead buckle life, the Razzle of the dredz-spiing, the plink of her, the plunk of him….from Wash to my street, old ny, to sickslick ‘Nam spin…and all that and more….

like it doesnt take me much to make things wack, but listen Dad, that’s one meaty book of music, of tappin’ the back of the neck, that’s devil’n the ghost out of all that slimslam, mofo biz that is just just so god damn sweet….aint gonna touch that beauty, ’cause u done it like no one spinn….

what kills me live is that u and i, almost the same age (still younger than u, but not by mucho), and yet this could be shot by inprovin’ kids, that’s the making of it so so rich….

my son says: Jalen (massive monkeys), seattle, 2007 IZ the book! :))))))))))….his fav…

and damn…i cant say a twang at all at the moment, ’cause is cypher night (monday) and im totally stitched and like Chang said it all…and Orb doubled-dutched it home, all the fucking way home…

    what does this mean;

EVERYONE, GO BUY CHARLES PETERSON’S BOOK CYPHER

let it smoke you up, smoke you up on the dance floor! :)))))))

    hugs
    bob

P.S. personal letter coming in the morning…gotta clean house..;)))

  30. David;

I have replied to your email, but it keeps bouncing back. It seems like you are getting flooded with mail!!
I’ll send it again later tonight. Thanks

  31. Just as I predicted a month ago in my comment that was not really well received by many: The Burn will be a success if the content changes often, daily if possible. That is what will make it different from other online photo magazines. And I am glad to see that is the case here. It is the place to go and visit every day knowing there is something new happening.

David, I think you missed my question at the end of China Train, Mark Unrau discussion so I am re-posting it here:

The way the submission page is set up it doesn’t work for “multimedia” submissions. If you provide an email address where we should send the authorization for you to look at the work that we upload somewhere online, than you could see the work… For example, if I (and others) upload something to Vimeo page (or similar) and set it up as “private”, we can share it with you but would need an email address to send the authorization to. Perhaps that could be the way to submit these “video” pieces?

Also, since this is the place to talk about different things I take the opportunity for a little shameless self-promotion blurb. “The Lazarus Project”, a novel by Aleksandar Hemon, on which I collaborated, was a finalist for the National Book Award (in the US), now it is also among the finalists for the annual National Book Critics Circle awards. For those interested, my photographs show up throughout the book but there is a very interesting (interactive) website whit much wider selection of photographs with the text from the book. Half of the photos are mine and other half from the Chicago Historical Society… Here it is http://www.aleksandarhemon.com/… Hope some of you visit, and enjoy.

    Go Blurb!

    Cheers to all. Veba

  32. Dear David,

After one month of Burn, I think what is evolving here is something very special indeed. It is so refreshing to see not just the expected types of photography, but also the works and single images that catch your eye. I think it’s great to be surprised and introduced to possible new styles/genres/subject matters etc. that normally we may not see, or look for.

I just submitted some of my work for your consideration for an essay. A combinative look at my work on environmental issues in China in 2008, as a result of the Emerging Photographers Fund. Hope you have a chance to see it.

By the way, I was spreading the word about Burn and what you are doing recently, as part of a lecture (http://renyue.ofpix.com/1025.html) to Chinese photographers here in Beijing. Have tried to start actively getting involved in increasing educational dialogue with young Chinese photographers and western photographers, to exchange ideas and working practices. There’s a big gulf of misunderstanding between China and the west and I’m trying to do my part to bridging that gap. Having spent a few years teaching English in Asia to enable me to photograph, I really enjoy the educational side of work. Hope this can translate to photographic workshops in the future.

By the way, my lecture was organized by a lady called Ren Yue, the course director for Photojournalism at RenMin University here in Beijing. She’s currently interning at Magnum New York apparently. She is a very nice person and very interested in promoting more dialogue between China and the west through education in photography. When you are in the New York office next, please look her up as she may prove to be an excellent contact. An educational route into China for Burn possibly?!

    Bestest,
    Sean

    Dear Anton,

All the Best of luck in Tokyo. I lived in Japan for a year before I ended up in China. Great country…nice people…amazing food! Never saw much of the life you are venturing into photograph but am sure it will be fascinating. Presume you have sen Bruce Gilden’s work on the Yakuza? Or the quite amazing ‘The Firm’ by Jocelyn Bain Hogg? Good research for photographing organized crime. Stay safe and shoot well. Sean

  33. Bob,

I’m so glad you like the book. Not sure what to say – you humble me with your enthusiasm.

Yea, gotta love Jalen! That kid rocks the house! I can’t wait to see what he’s up to ten years from now.

Okay, gotta go make dinner now for my highly pregnant wife. Can’t wait (neither can she!).

    Peace,

    CP

  34. David,

As the e-mail I sent you did bounce back, let me try this way…. As you said that you were still going to work on the actual Boxing edit, I have also sent some additional photographs that I took last week-end and that you may like (I have put those in a file called “additional boxing photographs in the “individual photographs section of the ftp under my name). By the way, not that I have also sent a flash flv file on the ftp that hopefully you will be able to see with my latest edit and some voices.

    Cheers,

    Eric

  35. >Bang< I’m shooting.
Ok I agree, I don’t feel it’s fair to photographer’s whose works are being published to come on and say “hey yeah thats great. Ok now everyone look at my site and criticize me.” I’d like a place to do that. I don’t have a great deal of experience or material or people to criticize my work. I kind of felt more comfortable on the old site’s setting. This site is more formal and when you’re wandering a gallery would you whip out your portfolio and start asking questions to the patrons? Perhaps it’d be an experimental performance art piece. I actually HAVE some work I want criticism on from people far more experienced than my peers. (YOU ALL)

Also – is it possible to have an automagicly generated email for responses to your posts? I thought my post on Steve McCurry was lost, until I realized it was buried a page back. I know I can subscribe to the feed but I still have to navigate back to and find the post relevant to me… just a thought. Otherwise I really love to see the work everyone makes being put up on the home screen and reading the critiques and viewing the stories. It broadens what I’m being exposed to. I like it! Where else can one find such a reserve of talent?

  36. I think the challenge for Burn will be to remain coherent as it scales up. One guy with vision (DAH) and a tech guy won’t take it very much farther. Obviously DAH is first a photographer and, labor of love or not, this magazine is noise for him. Eventually, as the magazine grows and becomes more diverse, other people are going to have to choose individual photos and essays, as well as whatever new features might develop with time. It will require a diverse (and large enough) audience to attract corporate sponsorship to eventually pay people to handle both tech and creative chores.

Or perhaps David plans to limit the magazine’s scope to just that which he can personally handle. I think, like the previous blog, DAH is the main attraction (and I mean that in a positive sense). There are many venues to post this kind of work. Public critique clearly isn’t the desired goal here, considering the response to negative comments about a photo or essay. So, it seems to me that DAH’s direct involvement is the draw. Will it be sufficient to sustain a magazine? To attract sponsorship? That will be interesting to see. It’s a bold idea I would like to see succeed.

  37. BURN inspires..
    validates
    the importance of photography..
    a visual language,
    that we all speak…
at times its hard to keep up…
    so much happening..
    so many comments to read…
    but what a treasure…
    truly…
to look at new images daily,
    is a treat..
    a delicious treat…
Thank you David for your dedication to the craft
    and your vision..
    and Anton
thank you for your commitment and time and ‘SUGAR’
    A perfect opening…
    can’t wait to see more…
    XX

  38. I love Burn, I love this variety of photography which is very stimulating for me!
I am for the freedom of expression, thus for the comments, good or bad, I think that Burn is a victim of success and created jealousies…. I do not read everything, but I look at all the images!

Merci Mille fois David et Anton!!

  39. JIM…

you are clear in your thinking and absolutely right on…and i do not have all the answers to your implied questions….however, one of the things we have talked about at Magnum is having several portals or channels for various photographers….in other words, like personal tv shows or talk radio, where one person does carry a share of the sponsorship which follows a loyal audience…

so, there is no way i can be all things to all people nor do i have any intention of trying…i can only be who i am….you may or may not know that mentoring photographers has been a part of my life since i was in college…THIS thing you see now online as BURN is exactly what i have been doing all along…this is only an online version what i did as a grad student at 22 with my fellow students or even before as editor of our little family newspaper the three copies only Harvey Herald…so, this is not “noise” for me after all…if it is, then it is the same noise that has been hanging over me my whole career…hence my involvement with workshops, education programs etc etc..

now, if THIS interfered with my photography, then yes we (i) would have a problem….but, i will not let this happen….i will sacrifice my time writing to you for going to shoot a picture any day (i can write to you later!)…but, the way i live my life is to have everything as symbiotic as possible…i can do most of what i do for BURN sitting on the porch of my beach house (between pounding nails) or after spending a few days with one of my families i am shooting for Family Drive…i have shot four families since BURN started…..i work all the time, but i play all the time too…balance, balance…do what i like, do what i like…and this very philosophy is what i try to impart to my students, the people around me, etc etc…to make photography part of life, not something separate or “noise”…so BURN is not a wall, BURN is a window…

Jim, i live by my gut and instinct…i mean why not??? life is short and i damn well am going to enjoy it…savor every moment….i am enjoying this….otherwise i would not do it….i have never gone “to work” a day in my life, and i do not intend to start now…so whatever happens to BURN will be organic….if more people come on to help out, so be it..those people will be friends..talented friends yes, but friends nevertheless…and the day that BURN becomes something other than just a whole lot of fun, then it is over…and i get on my bike and go shoot some more photographs…no way to lose my friend, no way to lose..

please come to visit me in New York or at the beach….as busy as i get, i will always have time to sit down for a coffee, cold beer, or whatever and have a live chat with you…

    cheers, david

  40. DAVID,

I just wonder why there aren’t more selected photographs ? the ones selected stays on for days before a new one appears…

  41. SEAN….

i saw that you submitted an essay, but have not opened it yet..will do so today…i am very anxious to see how you have carried your project forward from your original Desertifcation of China essay…

isn’t BURN blocked in China?? i am not sure what impact we can have online, but i would welcome any educational opportunities in China…maybe we can do something with the Magnum workshop program…i will go the office today and find Ren Yue and see what she thinks….thanks for the tip…

as always, wishing you well in your work and hoping we meet again soon….

    cheers, david

  42. YAN…

the photographs in the “Selected Photograph” category have so far only been up for one day each….

“Essays” stay up on top longer, and i think their inherent complexity deserves a little more time….

i will start now keeping essays up on top as per usual, but also have either a “selected photograph” or a “dialogue” story just under on a daily change basis…please keep those pictures coming in…i need all the good singles i can find…

    cheers, david

  43. i think burn is coming along really well. teething problems have not been that apparent to me and now that everyone is settled into the flow of the place it works a treat.

i think comments for photos and essays is essential because, as a photographer, that´s the reason i would be interested in submitting .. showing photos is one thing – to have reactions to photos is just not possible through traditional publications and the like.. that´s one of the core benefits of this place, so long as the comments remain intelligent.

the spread between stories and singles on the main page has balance and there are enough places to talk that everyone will be able to find a place for themselves.

david alan harvey – seeing above that you skype.. i skype too.. it´s cheaper.. and so .. my skype name is ´bophoto´and if we could use that later for a call that would be great.. let me know thoughts.. i will leave it on for the rest of the day – if you are free.

looking forward very much to seeing how the work-in-progress looks.
to my mind what would be cool is if the 5 photographers selected for the month each had a mini-blog within the site, beginning with a statement of where they are and what they hope the contribution to the site will achieve.. and then over the month they are featured a discussion can be provoked with new posts by them and additional developments.. either bought about by comments on their work / progress or by their own endeavors.

if a section like this could be worked and archived, new people to the site could mabey search by the help they need – ie. ´book publishing´ could lead to the work-in-progress pages dealing with people trying to publish.. or edit.. or planning a shoot.. that kind of thing.

in any case – hope to speak later (lesson planning last night) and discuss more..

burn has quickly become a stand alone resource within the photo web bookmarks and is a fitting achievement on the back of roadtrips.

big pat on the back and thanks, now and for the future, for inspiration provided herein.

    it´s a corker.
    david

  44. I think the “channels” for Magnum are a good idea. I’ve watched the evolution of the “In Motion” concept over there with a lot of interest, and thought about how to fund these kids of efforts. Magnum’s and Mediastorm’s efforts with this kind of stuff are exciting to me. How to pay the bills on the web is the constant struggle. I’m a huge fanboy of editorial and documentary photography, forms which are threatened by the declining opportunities for new photographers to enter these areas. Which is why my great interest in Burn. Thank you for providing this venue.

I’m your age and have been making a living with a camera for 40 years. As you point out, I learned long ago that photography has to become part of life, integrated with life, or your life kind of self destructs (relationships, etc.). I’ve seen too many extremely talented photographers flame out over the years because they never found the balance. Passion needs to extend to everything in our lives.

Burn certainly has the potential to grow extensively, beyond the one-on-one teaching experience you appear to seek. But I understand from your posts that it’s the seat-of-the-pants, lets see what this evolves into, experience that is exciting to you. Good for you! Emerging photographers need this kind of venue more than ever.

  45. Hi David,

I think burn is simmering along quite nicely. The thing for me isn’t about content, I think there has been a really good balance so far; that shouldn’t change. I think the issue is about growth. This has to happen of course, to greater of lesser degrees, but it would be a shame if the community feel vanish because of a drive to maximize out put, for want of a better term. The fact that friendships have come about because of “road trips” and “burn” is one of the greatest features of what goes on here…… might that change if things grow to large? The close community of a village looses something when the village grows into a town. Do you envision this being effected?

I like very much the “work in progress” idea to. I’m looking forward to seeing what this brings to the table and how people react to seeing developing work.

    Jason

  46. DAVID,

I was for instance refering to “finland by jorg sundermann” which is the latest selected photograph since january 18…
    Cheers
    Yan

  47. Uau, only one month! and so much achieved! thanks David and Anton! I think that is truly important to have a space to publish emerging authors, and the possibility to discuss the projects is also one of the things I like about it. I loved the opportunity you gave me and would be very happy if I could help you guys with the growth and maintenance of BURN. Just tell me if I can be of any help. By the way, maybe I just haven’t figure it out, but isn’t there a way of editing comments? best to all, Miguel

  48. I am so pleased to have stumbled upon this dialog. I am far from emerging, but always looking for something fresh, like here. Keep up this great project. By reaching out to these growing photographers, you are helping to cultivate the thoughtful witnesses we all want to be. Burn is bookmarked. Best wishes, Paul O’Mara, Rome, GA.

  49. JIM…

yes, i guess i do lean towards the seat-of-the-pants style experience….well, that has been my life as a photographer and it is probably unrealistic for me to somehow become some kind of highly organized linear biz oriented person…my apartment in New York is small as is my labor of love beach spot, and i do not have any of the “toys” some men seek..

so, my standard of living might low by the judgment of some peers, but my LIFESTYLE is five star…and this philosophy is of course part of the one-on-one teaching experience i try to give young/emerging photographers…part of my teaching is about photography, most of my teaching is about life…

having said this however, i do now have around me some pretty savvy people…folks who want to help make BURN at least able to pay a small staff so that we can expand at least as you may imagine and, more importantly, pay photographers to go on assignment for BURN….

thanks for your thoughts…keep ’em coming….

    cheers, david

  50. DAVID BOWEN…

each photographer in “Work in Progress” will have their own discussion going..in effect their own blog…i am not quite sure what the advantage would be to go beyond …like right now, the discussion on Anton’s yakuza piece is between Anton and whoever is writing…how good this gets depends on how often Anton wants to get on and answer questions and how often he produces new work……

book publishing is pretty tricky online..i have thought a lot about it and do book publishing workshops from time to time…book publishing is the love of my professional life…i love love books and life is different after you publish a book…but, how in the world we deal with it online is beyond me…”going to the wall” is definitely a live experience..i cannot see how that could happen online…books are tactile by nature and i think the experience of making a book is equally tactile…

however, i discuss various aspects of making a book here all the time….Patricia started her book right here…but, when i stopped by her home to actually move work around and start thinking about really publishing, that was a one-on-one experience…and when she gets ready to go to press i will be in her living room or she will be in mine..

i will Skype you today or tomorrow…make sense???

    cheers, david

  51. JASON…

i have thought a lot about this issue…all i can say is so far so good….the number of people who write in and are part of this “community” are a very small percentage of who is actually logging on and reading and looking…the community seems small, but it really is not…every once in awhile , someone will log on here with a comment saying something like ” i have been a loyal reader here for two years, but this is my first comment”…lots of folks here my friend reading every word you write!!

this “community” of which you speak, and of which i love, would seem to depend, in part, on my ability to jump in here and answer your questions etc…anyway, here i am!!

Jason, all things evolve and change…”road trips” was beautiful, but i could not still be doing it…..so, that is going to happen no matter what we do…that is life, not business planning….the trick is to be constantly ahead of the curve so to speak by constantly re-inventing oneself …not radical psychological surgery…but, just the kind of stimulus that makes you jump out of bed in the morning and can’t wait to do whatever it is you want to do…or, i am laughing, does not allow you to go to bed at night because you are doing what you want to do!!!

    cheers, david

  52. YAN…

ok, now i see what you mean…i do have quite a few “selected photographs” ready to go…but, if i posted them anywhere but at the top, i do not think they would get their due..nobody would notice i think if they were not right at the top of the page…and we have other things to post at the top like “Dialogue” or “Essays”…different “news” on different days…some kind of content will change daily no matter what…for example, if an essay stays at the top for a few days, i will also post either a “selected photograph” or write story for Dialogue to be posted just below…there could be times when i just can’t do this because i am traveling or whatever, but mostly there will be daily updates one way or the other….

are you suggesting a little column off to the side where there could be a daily choice of “selected photograph”??? hmmmmm, we have thought about that…and other sites do that, but at least for the time being i think three or so “selected photographs” per week is plenty…and this accurately represents the amount of quality singles coming to me as well…i must choose from what i think is the best of the submissions….the number of submissions grows by the day so maybe, eventually, we will have to create a “sidebar” for these singles…let’s wait and see…

    thanks for your question Yan…

    cheers, david

  53. Whop needs a business plan? The beauty of this is that its the web….very little overhead and you arent staking your financial future on it. A business plan would kill your enthusiasm of it, and while someguy (from roadtrips) had a lot of knowledge, all the talk about modules and this and that made my head spin. Keep it small but interesting.

  54. RAFAL…

i just want to tweak your essay just a bit before publishing…i will send you the “tweaked” version and then you can tweak it back!!…in any case, you are very close to publication…you know i thought the same thing “what happens if the well goes dry?”…the opposite is happening…essays are rolling in…very very good ones…right now the water is rising…

    cheers, david

  55. PAUL…

welcome…to get yourself oriented a bit, please try rummaging through the archives…this could be helpful and get you “in the mood”….and, of course, your work is always welcomed as well..

    cheers, david

  56. MIGUEL…

we would welcome you to join us in every way…mostly, i would like to see you continuing your project..this should be your first and continuing priority….but if we can come up with a way for you to do other things, like spotting photographers who are doing interesting things, that would be cool too…

i do not think you can edit your comments here…i can, but you can’t..if you make a mistake it is just a mistake!!! if you make just some kind of terrible mistake, you can write to me and i can change it, but try not to do that por favor..

    cheers, david

  57. CATHY…

    so well put and thanks…

AND your bag should arrive at your house today (or tomorrow).. that is, if FEDEX does indeed deliver!! i sent a small light colored vertical style messenger that is lightweight and perfect for street shooting….no returns!!!

    cheers, david

    x

  58. VEBA..

you can indeed post links for multimedia…just follow the instructions for “essays”…all essay submissions have a link we must view before we can start editing…i will get back to you soonest (or Anton will) on what you need to do for an e-address…i am very interested in video material and we are going to post one soonest…i will find some time later today to have a look at The Lazarus Project…in any case, congratulations on this sophisticated placement of your work….

    cheers, david

  59. definitely makes sense david- and final edits are as personal as the statement people want to make..

editing with a student today it was great when they actually disagreed with my selection and gave good justification as to why.

where i am now is ploughing with editing.. the first long edit which could easily be culled down by 50% or more online, to 200 – 250.. at this point i´d be really interested in others opinion and talking about the idea and the best ways to produce it, in terms of organization of chapters and the best way to tell the story.

will look forward to talking and perhaps expressing myself better than here in type.

    best
    david

  60. DAVID,

Hummmm….”i have never gone “to work” a day in my life”…. I am afraid I cannot quite say the same…. Actually meant to be at work right now but we have a snow storm in Cincinnati, with roads blocked, schools closed so staying home, enjoying reading BURN :):):)… Thanks for these inspirational posts….

    Eric

  61. So many of us are working on long term projects that I think it would be helpful to share excerpts from a comment that DAH posted on Road Trips back in July 2008. Here are David’s words:

“working on a long term project goes something like this:

    (a) initial burst of energy and enthusiasm..first pictures…this is the easiest part

    (b) a slow down….second guessing, tortured thinking…wondering if it will work out…this is the hardest part

(c) second wind….another burst of energy from out of nowhere..more good work comes…you start to see something really developing

(d) another slowdown…but not as bad as the first….because by this time you will have a pretty good body of work…and this time you must tell yourself you cannot quit..too much at stake by now!!!

    (e) your final burst!!! like a runner at the end of a race…last kick!!!! squeeze squeeze squeeze…

    (f) knowing you are done…just absolutely done….

(g) time to edit….and then that whole process all over again with editing!!

    (h) time to pursue a layout…time to study typography, design, paper, binding…which publishers will work best??

    (i) time to “make it happen”…do it..find the publisher, organize an exhibition, seek gallery space…

    (j) stay on top of the printing and distribution..make sure it comes off the press as you intended….

(k) opening night….all your friends and family are there…pop a bottle of champaigne!!! make a speech..sign books..enjoy enjoy enjoy!!!

you MUST believe this is all worth it..and i can tell you that it is….but, you must know that this process is totally agonizing as well…you will suffer…you will be elated…you will suffer again and again…you must be happy with the percentages of pain/pleasure….90% pain, 10% pleasure…but that 10% is rare air…a place where very few go…”

  62. DAVID,
    did someone said FEDEX???
    ;-))))

    CATHY,
    agreed, make sense…
    Peace should prevail..
I will work harder on that..

  63. Hello David, This may be my first post on the new Burn. But like so many others I have been reading from the start. It seems like so much longer than a month ! So much great work.
Its 4am here and I’m heading for a flight- again. Too much work…interesting work…work that pays the bills, but not MY work. For me Burn has become a great source or inspiration and frustration. I check in daily but with never enough time…..often feel like I just miss things (Steve McCurry). But despite Burn keeps my head spinning with ideas and the determination to continue to pursue my own ideas..

    Thanks Mate.

  64. Veba, HUGE congratulations on the critical and popular success of The Lazarus Project! I generally buy books according to which ones were chosen as finalists in the National Book Award and other prestigious literary competitions. And I’ve just ordered my copy of The Lazarus Project. Thanks so much for sharing this info here. The web site is AMAZING as are your photos. Bravo, my friend!

    Patricia

  65. Hey Eric, if we’ve come this far, nothing will stop us now! It reminds me very much preparing to run my first marathon. I trained every day for an entire year to run what only took 4 hours on a warm October day. But I finished with a smile on my face and that was my intention.

I think you, Panos, Rafal, Bob B, Audrey, Erica, David McG, David B, Andrew S, Chris, Lance and others too numerous to mention are in it for the long haul…and yes, we’re ALL going to finish with a smile!

    Patricia

  66. Hi David,

I guess its a matter of balancing the scales. It all seems to be going along nicely, growing in its own unique way…. which is great. I think my point is about letting that happen of its own accord, with a gentle nudge here and there, so things evolve and remain vital, and yet are still organic. Sometimes if things get to big, they can be hard to control and ultimately the quality suffers. But, as you said, so far so good – you’re doing a great job…. and I’m sure nothing will change.

    Jason

  67. David,
i didn’t know where to put this request and as this seemed to be the best place, i put it here. kindly consider doing one of your workshops in india in near future (if possible, for indian students). there are many reasons for this strange request. in my city calcutta itself, i can assure you that there are many talented young photographers who, with the right kind of inspiration/lessons/knowledge, can do wonders but there are not many opportunities for them to learn it and learning it from photographers as experienced as you is totally out of the question and beyond dreams. there are not many schools where one can learn photography here. the only option is going abroad, which is impossible for most. here, one who wants to move to the next level, has to bank only on the net. but theories are theories and photography is one subject where one needs hands-on experience. there are many things that you and others say here that simply goes over the top simply because lack of exposure and knowledge though we want to learn.
i don’t think i have been able to properly word my request but i hope that you understand the need/purport. it will be a real help if you consider this request. i can assure you that you won’t regret.
    regards
    subhrajit

  68. MATHEW….

thanks for checking in…please send me new work as you have it….safe travels and i do hope we have a chance to meet again…all good memories mate, all good memories…

    cheers, david

  69. SUBRAJIT…

we sent your backpack to you yesterday, but unfortunately not signed…Mike fedexed it out before i had a chance to sign for you by mistake..he did not know that i had not already done so… i will have to do it when we meet in India…

i did do a workshop in India last year and it was very rewarding…i had about 6 Indian students among the 12 who attended…i would welcome any chance to return to your country and the voices of your countrymen told me the same thing you are telling me…..let’s see what we can work out….

    cheers, david

  70. hey all,
to say it first: i really like burn. however, i have hard times reading it since the page is just to wide for my small notebook display. i was just chatting with anton, apparently 1024px had to be sacrificed and only 2% are apparently 1024px. BUT: what about all the people who kind of dropped out because they can’t see the page properly anymore?… and btw of talking about anton: run into him at brussels airport the other day. funny story.
so, i have some work to share with you as well: I started a project on ‘Camel Wrestling’, a winter-only sport in Aegean towns in Turkey. I finished some first shootings during the championship in mid january: please feel free to have a look and comment: http://pa.photoshelter.com/gallery-show/G00000RF3lHVisVA
    best,
    Claudius

  71. will look forward to that day when you do your next workshop here. you are a busy man and time is short yet the need is extremely urgent and the chance seems to be the only one for many of us.
thanks for the backpack. may be it is good that it was not signed this time, at least i have an excuse to demand a meeting with you next time u r in my country. :)

  72. David, I am such an eager student that I have a folder in which I have saved every Road Tips comment you ever posted to me about my project. I will be bringing others out and posting them here as time goes on.

    your grateful student
    Patricia

  73. Hi DAH / ALL

Just a quick note to say happy one month birthday to burn..

DAH, I want to let you know oI am not dragging my feet on my essay, but have been shooting / editing / captioning up until recently when I have been knocked down hard with a migraine that won’t quit..so it is really difficult to work or think straight..and the computer makes everything worse..but as they say in the caribe..soon come..

  74. i was talking with anton about it and he said that the page is optimized for 1280; however, my great but small Thinkpad X61 has only 1024…
dunno, if there’s something todo about it, or that’s just how it has to be. if i am home, i have a big screen, but on the road (and that is most of the time): no chance to see burn properly…
    best, claudius

  75. Niels Rengelink

Just wanted to say: what a great first month. I have been one of the many ”silent witnesses” ever since the first days of ”Road Trips”, for some reason or other never feeling comfortable enough to join in (english not being my mother tongue didn’t help either). I am sure BURN will really compell people to step out into the light, so to speak, and show themselves, show who they are, what they are about, what moves them, drives them.

  76. Thanks David (and Anton)… email address is required so you can confirm the authorization and access the ‘privately’ published video, otherwise you can’t access the material, link on it’s own is not enough… but no rush, I only thought it would be useful to have a clear submission for people who make this kind of work in Quicktime or other video applications.
    Best,

  77. the novel is drop dead brilliant…..!!!….make you laugh hard and kick you in the balls and break your heart…..

    veba’s work too :))))

    hugs
    bob

  78. First of all, I would like to thank the American pharmaceutical industry for their production runs of various and sundry antiviral medications, most of which have formed my diet for much of the past week. Antivirals are a wonderful thing, especially when you are breeding viruses like the damn things are going out of style and you really want them to go out into the great big world and get real jobs, especially jobs that do not require anyone to be flat on their back for most of the day wondering why God doesn’t like them anymore. So yes, I am feeling much better now, thank you all very much.

Secondly, I would like to thank the American media for turning President Obama’s historic inauguration into the aural version of root canal work, minus that nice pina colada tasting anesthetic the dentist gives you nowadays. Most of the commentators and bloviating pundits did their best to sound like lousy sportscasters and the vast majority of them succeeded, pounding the historic significance of the day into my poor ill skull over and over again until I wanted to scream with agony. In my desperate search for relief, I finally alighted on C-Span, where the proceedings came to the commentary addled viewer both live and in living color, a cultural reference only the people over forty here will actually understand, and sans the constant blather of people in love with the sound of their own voices.

As I sat watching the steady stream of people march past our new President, I wondered just why it is that we the people need to subject our new presidents to a seemingly endless parade of cacophonous kitsch, and I also wish to report that the growing Hispanization of this our Great Republic will yield one great positive result…well, two, after lots of great looking babes in tight dresses and high heels—the music in inaugural parades will improve exponentially with the large scale addition of mariachi bands to the mix, although, the truth be told, adding a squadron of drunken chimpanzees with shotguns, kazoos, cowbells, and broken beer bottles to the parade route would improve the musical quality of your average high school marching band just as well and probably much faster to boot. The shotguns would also do wonders for removing the musically untalented from the gene pool, but I suspect that counts as an unintended consequence.

  79. CLAUDIUS….

i just do not understand a lot of tech stuff..that is why Mike and Anton have jobs!! but for example, on my tiny iPhone screen it even works just fine…?????

    cheers, david

  80. panos skoulidas

    David ,
    I’m with you…
    The iPhone does everything
    PERFECT except from phonecalls..
    god damn it..
I can’t believe U convinced me to buy one..
    ( ok.. kiddin!!!)

  81. pierre yves racine

    David,

I also really appreciate what has been going on here. I am really impressed as most people are (from what I have read or heard).

I don’t have much time to read everything here, but it is thanks to what I have learnt by reading Road Trips or Burn. It may seem paradoxical but it is not… I am now daily committing myself to photohraphy and it’s such a great experience… So I just wanted to thank you !!

  82. Patricia,

Funny that you said this. I have done the same. I also thought that it might be interesting for some to read the progression and the feedback received throughout the project. Will keep this for potential use….

    Eric

  83. I rely on my iPhone to access this website all the time! I just hate to type out long responses with it… And I can’t FTP with it… yet. There must be an app out there! or one being made.

  84. David,

No, Burn isn’t blocked in China at all. The old Road Trips went though a spell of being blocked, but then became unblocked again. So it looks like the Chinese have no problem with you at the moment…or maybe that was Panos!

Hope you manage to catch RenYue. As I said, a useful contact perhaps. I know her University has held lectures linked to the Alexia Foundation which is quite a big grant/funding organization in the US. There’s quite a wall between the chinese photographer community and western photographer community, mainly due to the obvious language and cultural barriers. I think China is relatively untapped in terms of finding ’emerging’ photographers. Would be great to find some on Burn eventually. Maybe RenYue could act as a ‘feeder-cell’ in China, suggesting potential Chinese photographers who would otherwise have no chance to get their work see by a western audience. Just a thought.

    Best,
    Sean

  85. I actually have submitted an essay, hope you will find the time to have a look at it.

    Regards

    Niels

  86. yes, doctors, herbalists, acupuncturists…lifelong battle..my cross to bear as it were :) not so bad as they used to be..daily exercise helps a lot, but I hurt my knee 2 months ago (at the gym, go figure) so I have to wait to return and so they are bad again..feeling stronger today

  87. I’m Pierrrra and never been in Arles or Perpignan, seems virgin land for me .. we have briefly met this summer at TPW, where I learned about photography from Christopher Anderson. I have started my profession a few years ago and did some freelance work in London and around the world. Now I’m now just about to go to India to follow a student of a guru, he is famous in India but not England where I live. I believe there will be a lot to photograph but I would need some tips to approach the subject from someone like you. Would it be possible?
    Many thanks ;-)

  88. Hi, Paul. I just saw your Rome, GA dateline, which is an odd place to be from, and tried to email you through your website, but the contact form isn’t working. My mother was a Harbin from Rome, my father was chaplain at Darlington briefly, and I went to Sewanee (lots of pictures on your site). If you did not have a Irish surname, I would assume we are cousins. ;>) Send me an email merchant[at]speakeasy[dot}net.

  89. Piers hi,
    All jokes aside..
I think this is Cathy’s field..
I’m sure she has all the right answers..
    Cathyyyy where U at?
    Bonjorno from
    BLOODY LA y’all!
( attending online traffic school right now..
    Just forked out $266.. Damn!!!?)

  90. Dragged on a little then, did it Akaky? Sometimes it’s an asset to be deaf. I know.

Good to hear that you are feeling better.

    Mike.

  91. David, I’m sure that you will agree that many contributors here are in little need of assistance with regard to photographic technique but that many are in need of help when it comes to making a living from their photography? I’m thinking of how people should approach magazines etc. (i.e. which magazines accept e-mail submissions and which ignore such contact, preferring to see a portfolio). This kind of information will be invaluable to some. Perhaps a few interviews with photo editors?

Thank you for the heads-up with regard to Srinivas Kuruganti – you mentioned in a reply that you were a fan of his work so I checked out his website and I too was most impressed. I even contacted him by e-mail to ask if he was making a living from his photography and was surprised to hear from him that no, he self finances his work. He has approached a few publications in the past but had not received a reply. If he is contacting publications by e-mail and the publication ignores e-mail then that would explain why! He has just moved from New York to London. Perhaps you could arrange a meeting between him and someone at Magnum London? Intern?

My apologies for mentioning this in “public Srinivas but I don’t have a private contact point for David. Hope I haven’t written out-of-turn.

    Mike.

  92. PANOS
    You are too funny! :))

    PIERA
I have spent a lot of time in India. Where are you going and who is the guru? Be careful using the word guru around here, it could get you in trouble. :))
What are you planning to photograph? The guru?
If you would like to discuss this privately feel free to email me at arunachala22@yahoo.com

  93. Just lost a message to…

    PANOS.
    You are too funny :))

    PIERA.
David can help you with how to approach the subject but if you want to talk about India, feel free to contact me at arunachala22@yahoo.com I’ve spent a lot of time there.
Who is the guru you are going to see? Are you planning to photograph him/her or something else in India?

  94. Yes sir and application. Apple calls programs Applications or Apps for short. you can download them through iTune’s App store. I just discovered there ARE indeed FTP applications for the iPhone. that makes updating the website on the fly easier.

  95. Pierre-Yves Racine

Sure David, it would be great ! Or in Brittany if you happen to travel there… I’ll probably have to choose btw Perpignan and Arles… It’s Arles’s 40th birthday this summer so it could be a great edition….

BTW, I am working on a project of portraits, notably with teenagers. It should run throughout 2009, being either self-assigned and assignments. Can I submit that for the work in progress section ? What happens there with just one picture from Anton is already so exciting…

    Thanks !

  96. Thank you Pierre, I have just returned to leave a link to the Canon Website! There is also an interview there with Volker Lensch, Photo Editor at Stern. This is the type of advice I was thinking of. First Rule: check the online web pages of magazines that publish work that you empathize with. Buy the magazine and check the masthead to see who edits and contact them only when you are ready and prepared. I was not aware of the photo editor site so thanks again.

    Mike.

  97. DAVID.

FEDEX just came. I felt like a little kid…enjoyed seeing the box with David Alen Harvey/Magnum on it so much I didnt feel the need to go any further :)) You can just send out empty boxes from now on.

LOVE the bag. I’m wearing a Patagonia fleece as we speak so it’s right up my alley. Khaki goes with my wardrobe, size is great, can use it as a purse even…love what you wrote, what else could a girl want?

Other than maybe a sprinkling of magic DAH photo dust inside? :))

Hope to show you the bag on my shoulder next time we cross paths. Along with all the kick-ass photos I take using it.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Muchas Gracias.

  98. MIKE R…

making suggestions any way i can for photographers to earn a living is definitely what i do…one way or another this whole sight should be seen as an aid in this…most photographers want to put the cart before the horse so to speak..they want the contact information before they have anything worthy of presenting…so, i do concentrate here more on the “seeing”, rather than who you need to see….

however, i am willing to do both….and for those photographers here whose books i have mentored will tell you and for those photographers here for whom i have set up appointments etc will tell you, i have no problem in giving out specifics to those photographers who are actually ready to take their next step…

the career advice (i hate the word advice) i give is always specific to the photographer…no are no real rules..it always depends on the individual…but, there are some general things which i have written about here in the past, but am totally willing to go into again if i presented with the question you wish answered..ask away….

    cheers, david

  99. panos skoulidas

    Peace and love for CATHY,
    today.. and everyday…
( I envy your new photocamera bag)
    … Lucky U!!!
    ;-)

  100. Anyone here interested in David LaChapelle?

I saw a great documentary on TV about him last night…called Eye Candy, the crazy life of David La Chapelle. It’s available online too.

Panos, you would enjoy him, he says “If you like reality, take the bus.” :))

What I want to share here is what was said about Andy Warhol, David LC’s mentor:
“Andy was dedicated, kind, endlessly available and inexhaustable. He had no sense of being tired.”

Who does that remind you of??? DAH???
    Absolutely.

  101. panos skoulidas

    Yes.. Cathy…
    I couldn’t agree more..
    I do love that crazy
    D LaChapelle guy…
    and also yes..
Nobody I know can compare with
    DAH’s energy..
DAH once wrote here:”… my kind of person, Sleep Late Wake up Early..”

  102. Niels Rengelink

Cathy, I like his photo of Ewan McGregor, Dollhouse Disaster 2. Not sure of the rest of his work, I guess I prefer taking the bus. His work reminds me of a Dutch photographer / artist, Erwin Olaf, you probably heard of him, if not: erwinolaf.com Perhaps a little little less kitsch than David LC, at least some of his work, have a look for instance at his series ”Hope”.

  103. Niels Rengelink

Then again: maybe ”kitsch” is too easy a respone to his work, I’ll have a better look at it.

  104. You’re not alone. The documentary used exactly that word…Kitsch.

I am a fan of his documentary on krumping (a variation on breakdance) called Rize

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0efEID-uCtE

Never knew much about him till last night. Had seen a few images here and there. Not really my thing but glad I watched Eye Candy.

When I googled it today I found the entire documentary online at Logo, a gay TV (?) network

    http://www.logoonline.com/video/index.jhtml?id=1603315&vid=334673

  105. Pierre-Yves Racine

David also said that you must try and understand the point of view of who’s behind the desk at the magazine, or sthg like that…

  106. First of all a big thank you, thanks for make this wonderful place in the internet. With only a month it has become one of my favourite websites, a place for the real Photography, no cameras, no flickr, no megapixels.. only inspiring photographs and essays. It makes me want to be a better photographer.

  107. Hi Mike,

    Thanks so much.
By the way, I did look at the links on the Canon site and yes, there are some things said that one should take note of.

David, as Mike noted, I have been trying to really push getting a recent project of mine looked at by editors.I sent out CD’s with a statement and I only heard back form one magazine. I wasn’t expecting a lot of them to respond but I thought it was an important story to get out there.
I’ve had this happen in the past with other projects also and I’m trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong.
I would really appreciate some advice from you on this.

    Thanks David.

    Srinivas

  108. MESSAGE FROM DAVID (via Patricia)

DAH is on the road with Mike on their way down to his beach cottage to “pound some nails, cut some wood & celebrate my son Bryan’s birthday on Saturday.” It’s a nine-hour drive so David wanted you all to know he will be later than usual posting today’s new selected photo.

  109. ALL!

THIS NEWS JUST IN! (got the pic this morning/late last night)

CONGRATULATIONS TO CHARLES AND MASCHA PETERSON ON THE BIRTH OF THEIR FINE YOUNG ROCKSTART/HIPHOP SWINGER

    FELIX MARS PETERSON

“Here is the skinny: Felix Mars Peterson, son of Mascha Kroenlein and Charles Peterson. Born 1/29/09, 12:24 am at Swedish Hospital, Seattle. 6 pounds even (2722 grams) and 19 inches (48cm) tall. All systems are go and he’s ready to take the world head on. He’s supercute and he looks a lot like his dad. Mascha is fine (after a 30 hour labor) and we are now back home. Life is good. Love, Charles and Mascha”

BIG BIG UPS FOR CHARLES AND MASCHA….BUT MOSTLY FOR MASCHA, ‘CAUSE DAD’S WORK WAS REALLY ONLY ABOUT 2 MINUTES WORTH ;))))…

We all couldnt be happier and prouder of the 2 of you.

WELCOME TO THE WORLD and (good god, dare i say it) BURN!

    hugs
    bob

  110. First:

Why is there a Swedish hospital in Seattle?

    Second:

Congratulations to Charles and Mascha and, of course, to the star of the show, Felix!

    Third:

Felix Mars Peterson is not the name of some rock/rap dolt who can’t tell the difference between the key of G and a kilo of coke, but of a jazz artist. Remember, you heard it here first!

  111. Welcome Felix! I bet you are already the most photographed newborn babe in Seattle! BIG congratuulations to Mascha for a l-o-n-g labor and successful delivery. And love to our buddy Charles whose life has just moved to a new level of existence. Enjoy every minute!

    Patricia

  112. Congratulations to the growing Peterson clan!

Panos, let me know a good day to hook up with you in Seattle, and maybe Charles too if he’s available :))

  113. panos skoulidas

    Tom,
Of course I will call U..
    when I’m in Seattle…
    Hell yeahhhh!!!!
    ;-)
    Can’t wait

  114. Thank you all! It’s been an amazing four days so far. More pics to come! He is an absolutely stellar little man. Of course, I need more sleep!

Panos, if you see this, yes lets hook up. Probably towards the end of your visit here will work best for me. Let me know when you are meeting with Tom. Why are you in Seattle again? Send me an email.

    All the best,

    CP

  115. David,

There was a small blue stuff (looks like earrings or tinkles…i don’t know – some hanging stuff) in one of the side pockets of your backpack along with a CF card case. i write this because it could be that the blue thing may be important (for good old memories) to you or to somebody you know. so please let me know, i shall give that thing back to you. otherwise, i will keep that in the bag as a luck symbol. if you need, i shall send you a photo of this thing.

By the way, many thanks for the bag. I remember reading a comic strip in my childhood about a young boy discovering the old boots of a soccer star and the miracles he did thereafter wearing those old boots on the soccer field. with the bag on my back, i feel like that boy.

  116. Hi David,

I see Bun are working as well…hmmmm…. why should not, isn’t it?
Many posts, thousands comments. We’ll see how many it will be after one year.
I am sure and I was sure it will be one of the best photo magazine soon. I will try post more comments and first of all more constructive comments.

    :)

  117. Dear David,

I’ve been reading your blog for almost a year now. And the work done with Burn now is amazing.

I’m french and I’ve just bought “Réponses Photo” (that i usually don’t buy). The cover was a nice picture… i realized that you were the photographer. It is a report on the workshop in Oslo, written by Hubert Haynaud.
This is a nice overview of the workshop with P. Pellegrin, J. Bendiksen, and A. Webb in Norway.

I would love to attend this course, one day!
    Keep in touch.
    julien

  118. ALL…
    BIG STORM…
driving non stop from Seattle to LA..
    222 more miles to go.
    the conversations on BURN
and the conversations in the car..
    Made my brain BURNING..
    photography.. Critiques..
Mistakes.. Little truths , big truths..
    Quick judgements.. Misunderstandings..
    All good..
I haven’t witnessed so intense conversations..
    Since KATHARINAS single photo..
    INTENSITY is good… Great..
    Some might got hurt..
    Or maybe not…
    But our subconcious is released
.. We are free.. Although we act
    Like there are no rules..
Oh yes we DO have rules…
Do we cross the lines sometimes..
    Yes we do ..
    But.. Bottomline…
We ALL in here do try hard…
    and DO promote photography..
    One way or another..
    Positive or not…
Slow or fast.. Eloquently or not…
Because by the end of the day the most
Important thing is to FINISH the job..
Regardless the medium or the style you (we)chose…
    Peace and hugs
    Driving through the storm..
This storm that none of us really wants to get out of…
    BURN… is that storm ..:)

  119. I’ve had the privilege of meeting a number of wonderful people from this community over the last few months, and it is most certainly a community in the truest sense, and it never ceases to amaze me the growing connections, like ripples extending from the center, intertwined back to my own life and people I already know. Seven degrees indeed.

It was great to meet Charles Peterson, Panos, and Katia in Seattle the other day. And Katia, well she is living it. No fly on the wall observer, a real humanitarian who also happens to be a great photographer. Since it’s nice to see photos of the characters from Road Trips and Burn to put a face with the posts, and I often look at Patricia’s photos from DAH’ loft, hope you don’t mind this link to a little photo of Katia on the street in Seattle with one of her favorites.

Going to try this code, see if it works here … Katia and friend

    peace, tom

    The Perfect Storm

    thank you BURN

  121. panos skoulidas

    Oh.. MARCIN..
I can’t wait to post new pictures up..
from the Roadtrip up in Seattle..
But for now I need to figure out
    where I’m gonna sleep tonight..
    Laughing..
    What a life..but I don’t complain..
Homelessness could also be a choice…
I gotta be honest with all of you..
    Myself especially…!
    :)))

  122. Panos,
“..Oh yes we DO have rules…”
Sometimes there seem to be quite a few invisible rules out here that determine within seconds whether or not a photo is seen as “good/bad/superficial etc” … pretty weird.

  123. MARCIN….

you have not been here too much lately, but your comments are always welcomed….and i am looking for your pictures too…as always, wishing you well…

    cheers, david

  124. Panos

This is what I miss most after road trip was closed, your works in progress posted frequently.
Yesterday I have been looking at Rafal’s works on flickr, damn how good his photos are now!
It is sad you are homeless now (or still), I am sure you will figure out something soon. You have to. I am not able to read all comments, so I do not know everything what happened in your life. I hope everything going in good direction. Homelessness could not be any choice. Human being is very weak creature. I’ve seen it so many times.
I am sure this is only big adventure.
From LA to Seattle? Man, why are you not posted photos and informations on your blog?
    hmmmm…. I should read more comments :)
    peace my friend

  125. DAVID

Yes, I was and still am little out, but I will try write more. I am thinking hard about perpignan. It will be difficult in this year, but if you will be there I will try get there also.
I was thinking about alone photo trip to italy right after perpignan, but not this year for sure. But for two days it is possible for 80% now.
    Anyway…
What you are doing now? I have read you are working on a book. Still famili, or women or maybe some assignment?

    Take care.

  126. MARCIN….

i am continuing with my family project…i think i still have another year of work maybe more…as you know, i am working with medium format film and some Polaroid…since i am financing this myself, it is slow going but steady….i just shot some families along the Texas/Mexico border and will move out West soonest….most likely i will also do an assignment for Natgeo later this year….

just like everyone else , i am always juggling my time..trying to balance one thing with another…in the mix also is the old beach cottage i bought a few months ago which is a major re-construction job…lots of fun, lots of work and very very rewarding…this beach place is just perfect for small seminars/workshops etc…my biggest decision is where to spend most of my time, at the beach or in New York??? hmmmmm….i guess that will just work itself out…

it sure would be nice if we could meet in Perpignan…however, i am not 100% sure i will go this year (but, i say that every year!!)….

2009 must be the year we meet…at least, i hope so….

    cheers, david

  127. JULIEN..

i am working now with Magnum to create a workshop program, similar to Oslo, in either Arles or Perpignan…keep your eyes open for this….but, my very best workshops are in my New York loft or coming soonest at my Carolina beach house … i find the ones i do at home to be the most rewarding for both my students and for me..if you keep your eye on my workshop schedule here on BURN you may find one suitable for you…there is a portfolio review required to take my classes and i try very hard to get a good mix of students from different countries and styles of photography…

perhaps we will meet in France soonest…or New York??

    cheers, david

  128. DAVID,

re-construction job…?….hmmmmm… I know something about it, we bought small one and a half room loft and I have a lot work with.
Maybe will be the time when I will visit you in your beach cottage. Damn… beach cottage! You are lucky man! I almost feel the sea smell…
    :)
I am not sure about Perpignan also, it will be vry difficult this year but I am stubborn and I have a plan so may be… may be…

I wish you luck and take care

    peace

  129. eduardo sepulveda

david, this film was how i knew about your workshops, at that time i’d never imagine i’d end up in oaxaca meeting you.

    cheers, eduardo

  130. DAH….

There is chatter about the 500 character limit (around 100 words) that PhotoShelter imposes in the description field not being enough for some people for the EPF project description.

I talked with Anton and he suggested keeping it in that length or maybe providing a link to the full description..but some people don’t have sites or have flash sites and can’t link to a specific page.

What would you like to see happen?

    e

  131. erica!

you were in my dream last night! it was wonderful
and, at the same time, it was completely natural and ordinary.
we were at DAH’s place, cleaning, as we waited for him.
we chatted about our work and life and kids and dogs.
a child appeared for a short time and you amused him with some toys and books.
people came in, looking for DAH, and left. all the while we cleaned and chattered.
DAH never came but we were happy nonetheless.
anyway, just wanted to say what a pleasure it was to dream-meet you.
looking forward to meeting you on this side of a dream some day. :)

    katia

  132. I guess there is a difference between “lightbox description” and “gallery description”, which allows a longer description (2000 character)..so can it go there?

  133. MARCIN…
i agree with U… i missed the crazy links… i missed the randomn expression… the work in progress…
im starting bombing all of you again…
i will try once more to recover my stolen flash card from the police department… more than 400 unreleased venice photos in there…
In the meantime lets watch a small picassa slideshow… showing DAH strobe techniques…

    http://picasaweb.google.com/innerspacecowpanos/DAHInVenice?authkey=BTr41sAvJI0

  134. David,

I just exchanged some emails with Ed Kashi, I bounced around the idea of a Burn Profile on Ed Kashi’s career as a photojournalist. Is there a better contact/email for you these days than the one I have?? I will pass it on to Mr. Kashi if your are interested. I think there is a very good dialogue to be had there!!

Feel free to email that info directly: Wadeshock@gmail.com Thanks David!

    Cheers. Jeremy

  135. ERICA…

let me check on that one for you…please remember that finalists may be asked for more information than what is in the preliminary entry…100 words probably is enough for that first round, but i will indeed make an inquiry now…

    cheers, david

  136. JEREMY..

whatever e-mail you have for me is just fine….Ed and i are good friends and i had him as speaker at one of my workshops in New York…i have so many profiles to do and he will certainly be on the list….by the way , how did we miss in Durango?? i was there for two weeks….many thanks for thinking…

    cheers, david

  137. that’s brilliant … chuckling :))

BTW David, may I highly recommend the Stiletto 14 oz. Titanium framing hammer. Less weight but will still drive a 16 penny in two wacks. Worth every of those 10,000 pennies. Sorry for the off-subject gear talk but I collect and use tools like you do with bags!

  138. JEREMY…

i do not mean JUST recently in Durango…i mean at Christmas and up until January 6…sorry, i thought you knew i was in town…frankly, i do stay fairly “hidden” when i am in Durango and stick pretty tight to my family, but always time for a coffee at the Steaming Bean…

  139. More than one month BURN, well, it’s time to join! I have been watching the blog and Burn a while, especially after I did the NYloft workshop with David in October. Wow, I miss it, David, the whole thing, so maybe this is the place to keep it alive..? I guess!
Looking forward to get to know you.. see the pictures..discuss!

    Cheers, Andrea**

  140. David, I posted this under Visions for 2009 last week, not sure if you saw it as that dialog has not seen much action lately.
I am in Norfolk now though.

David, I am not sure if this is the right place for this if not I apologize, I could not find a contact link.
If I remember correctly in one of your Road Trips blogs you said that you were interested in trying to look up the Norfolk Family from Tell It Like it Is for your new project.
My job has me Norfolk for the better part of the next two weeks. I will have some free time and would be happy to do some leg work for you.

  141. ANDREA…

very nice to have you hear and i would be most appreciative if you submitted one of your essays for publication here…you are certainly very well qualified…yes, that was so much fun in New York and it now seems a bit like a dream….so so much going on…wishing to see you again soonest…

    cheers, david

  142. KURT..

somehow i did miss your comment..thanks for bringing it back…i do always check Dialogue and i “owe” everyone a story there soon, but i did miss your comment…anyway, i probably will not go to Norfolk to meet that family until later this spring…we want to do shoot a video of that process and so it just makes sense to do it a bit later…

what are you doing in Norfolk?? actually, i am not far from there now and fly out of Norfolk airport tomorrow…i am down in the Outer Banks of Carolina at the moment working on my cottage…sanding floors!!! by the way, i recommend many professions , however being a floor sander is now one job i will cross off my list of fantasy jobs!!

anyway, i will be back in about 10 days, so if you are still around, come on down to the beach!!!

    cheers david

  143. I would love to submit my pictures! Right now I am heading towards Greenland, finishing the project up in the northernmost settlement of the world, so I can consentrate on the bodies when I come back.. By the way I will present my Greenland project at this years’ DOK09 in Oslo! You should come!! We’ll miss you Magnum guys this year.. All of you BURN people are welcome, workshop with Christopher Morris and Antonin Kratochvil!

Like a dream, that’s true…but let’s not stop dreaming, see you soooon!

  144. David, I am in Norfolk throughout the rest of the month for my bill paying job. I am here at least once a month, usually just a few days but this month it has me down for about three weeks total. I would enjoy taking you up on your offer when you return, by then a brake from Norfolk will be nice.

  145. Hi Andrea!

It’s so good to hear from you again. You’ve been missed by those of us who were fortunate enough to meet you and see your work at David’s loft in October. By the way, here’s a link to the gallery of photos I took that weekend. There’s a sweet one of you and your boyfriend!

    http://www.pbase.com/windchimewalker/brooklyn1

Can’t wait to see your Greenland project when it’s completed…

    hugs
    Patricia

  146. hi gang. sorry i have been MIA. i just never know where to post on this site still…. i also have been busy with LOOK – which is what you will be hearing from me for the next 5+ months…

DAH – i will be in NYC on Sunday for 8 days. hope you will be in town… will give you a call.

  147. Chris ,
    Congratulations…
    I gotta say..
I’ve been around Venice beach night and day,
    But never witnessed this carnavale…
    …:)))))))
    again, good job!!!

  148. DAH……..

regarding EPF..will the blurb books that the finalists create need to contain the same edit that they originally submitted by March 15, or will the book be allowed to contain an expanded edit?

    thanks :)

  149. ERICA…

the March 15 deadline is the deadline for all pictures to be considered….i would imagine perhaps the reverse…an expanded edit for the first go around, and a tighter edit for the book..but, please please do as you see fit..

    cheers, david

  150. ANDREA…

sorry to miss seeing you and your work in Oslo..it is hard for me to imagine that was a year ago we met at the conference…in any case, i await your work here for BURN…

    cheers, david

  151. ERICA…

we are still trying to work this out with Photoshelter….but, for the preliminary entry , i think one could quickly describe their project in 100 words …i am anticipating well over 1000 entries for the EPF, so maybe 100 word quick intros makes sense..again, for the finalists, there will be ample space to fully flush out the whole idea…and certainly no great set of pictures is going to be thrown out because there are not enough words to describe it…a great set of photographs will command us to get the whole story one way or another..and think of it this way too..if you had to do a book jacket description of your hypothetical Phaidon book, 100 words is about the dust jacket limit and is also the length of this explanation…

    cheers, david

  152. Who’s passing what on????
Kinda early but I’ll take a hit!!!!
Where’s the bong? I’m in line..
    :)))))

  153. Oh I see now who stole the Bong!
    Michael Phelps did it…
    I love that kid!!!
    High as a kite but
Fast as a BULLIT( mustang )..
    ;)

  154. Hey DAVID,

What happened with your talks with the lawyer re. using music on slideshows? If there is any dialogue on the site here can you please point me in the right direction. Just rather interested to now where we stand on this issue.

    Cheers,

    James

  155. I think my first comment here :))) (second after the one just left on Bob essay ).
Such a good work here on Burn.
I found the perfect answer to the doubt of the “design and project” period in Roadtrip post.
I read it, look at it, from time to time,
The only thing that I miss from Roadtrip as I wrote yesterday to Aga is the dialogue… the edit we did each other. The link posted by Panos or Patricia or something new.
May be the section Work in Progress needs to be improved?
I.e. I would like to see new things on Anton work
    Soichiro. :)))

  156. LAURA…

we are waiting waiting waiting for several photographers to please please please get their work in for the “work in progress” section….i have asked several to do this, several have promised, but i just do not have the work in hand..now Anton’s work is in Japan and Anton lives in Belgium, so you may have to be patient for Anton’s next yakuza pictures…but, i do think he is going back to Japan in March to do more..

now, let me tell you a wicked little secret (that all editors know)..photographers are definitely their own worst enemy….presented with opportunity , many will get scared or ignore it or forget it or whatever…i have seen this as a workshop teacher, but i really really see it here on BURN as an editor..photographers (most of them) just cannot complete a task…now, i love photographers and i am a photographer, but this is a truism…..photographers need personal managers for their lives (me most of all!)….one of Sebastaio Salgado’s reasons for success is his wife Lelia…yes , Sebastaio is a fine photographer, but he is a disaster like all the rest of us..only Lelia gets him moving in the right direction, gets his shows up,makes sure his socks match, makes sure his pictures are into the editors etc etc…anyway, i know i over-answered your question!!! sorry…

Laura, now you should be able to have a dialogue right here on Dialogue..i mean why not?? you can post links or do whatever you want…now, it is true that i have not written as many stories nor asked the readers here questions as i did on Road Trips….well, it is frankly just a matter of time…i can either spend my time writing (as i did on Road Trips) or editing the work of readers (as i do here on BURN)…and you are not the first person to complain of no road trips style dialogue…but the intention was that Dialogue would be that place..but most readers seem to just want to comment on the daily photos or essays…anyway, i will try to write more here, but with the EPF coming and so so many submissions every day here on BURN, i think i am going to be crazy busy…

BUT, i do always always look for questions to me…as i did yours just now….so anytime you need help or whatever, ask away here, and i will try to be on time with an answer…

    cheers, ciao, david

  157. JAMES….

there is a lot of gray area, but we pulled all copyrighted music off of BURN a couple of weeks ago..all the music playing now has either permission granted or is not copyrighted…if you Google rules of copyrighted music, you will see it all right there…the main reason we pulled it off BURN was that we found out that all websites are considered commercial whether anything is being sold or not…weird, but true…anyway, please find some music you can legally use..there is lots of it out there…

    cheers, david

  158. :)
yes I also am my worst enemy. But not so bad. Sometimes I’m with myself a pedantic teacher.
Thank you for the full answer. Especially appreciate because I guess it was before the morning coffe :))))

  159. Yes, I thought this might be the case. I am currently using royalty free music for multimedia works. You have to dig around a bit as a lot of sites offering royalty free audio are really bad, but as you say it is out there. Thanks for clarifying.

  160. Haik,

    Guess what??!!
All of my lost photos have been recovered!!!!
I wish you were here so I could give you a gigantic (((((HUG)))))
Your program worked, my friend!! Now, get back to Seattle soon
so i can take you out to celebrate, OK??
Many kisses and many big smiles to you, Haik.
    YOU DID IT!!!!!!!!! :))))))

    wow… i still can’t believe it.
but i’ve seen it for myself.
    they’re all back.
    THANK YOU!!!!!!!

    k.

  161. Haik…
    BRAVOOOO
    our trip to seattle
HELPED KATIA RECOVER THE LOST FILES..
Katia , start posting “Street Kids” soonest..
    :))))))

  162. One more proof that the BURN
    community is REAL..
    we are helping each other..
We are becoming better human beings..
BURN is not a contest, it’s
    a FAMILY..
    maybe dysfunctional at times,
    But still a family…
    Thanks again HAIK…

  163. now, i need to go through ALL my work with the street kids.
four years worth. (first year is mostly crap though).
    and edit, edit, edit.
but first i must determine how i want to tell this story.
and, indeed, WHAT i can tell, without bringing trouble to my kids.
so many questions and so many ways i can approach this.
    i’m not sure how yet..
    but
i have a new resolve now.
i feel like i’ve been given a second chance.
    it’s a wake up call, y’know?
to stop sitting on all this and make some hard decisions.
    i might need some help.
    DAH? can we talk??

    haik, you are a Hero.

    k.

  164. KATIA,

I am so happy that “Street Kids” are back – it is truly a miracle – I did not believe your email at first.

We can all blame and thank BURN and David for the opportunity to share within this family.

hmmm….and Panos, because he is the tormented one that makes this place functional :-))).

Katia – get those kids ready for a show. we all want to see them….

    cheers,
    Haik

  165. patricia–

i’m still kind of shocked and overwhelmed.
    it’s all here. wow.. unreal.
after my son failed to recover them twice (he is extremely tech-savvy)
i didn’t think it would be possible to ever lay eyes on them again.
    and then came HAIK!! haha..
alone we are nothing – together we are UNSTOPPABLE!!! :))

    love you all..
and kisses to you, pattycake. **
    (how are you, dear?)

    k.

  166. Patriciaaaaaaaaa!
    All my love to you..
    I’m in a big, huge truck…
    Humongous … F-550 with twin turbo ..
    Going 5 miles per hour..
    From hollywood to the desert…
    LA traffic ..
I’m on 110 south looking for 91 east..
    Still in south central..
The place to be..( laughing.. Iphoning)..
To all my fellow BURNoulians that are driving
and at the same time checking on
    BURN…
    please be careful…
Love y’all ( but extra love for mike sis patricia today..
    Driving!

  167. I am so very well, dear Katia. And I KNOW how you’re feeling!!! Now you have no excuses to hold back on sending DAH your photo essay of your kids. Can’t wait to see it…

    hugs
    Patricia

  168. Maybe for ‘dialogue’ there could be a section to click on with the others, that showed recent comments from just the ‘dialogue’ section… when I just click on dialogue now, I go to the very beginning of the post.. Don’t know if that makes sense… but I really enjoy the box with the recent comments posted, maybe a separate one for dialogue? **

  169. David,

Did you ever look into the ASCAP licensing for web sites. It is from what I understand a nominal fee. Would be worth it. I think it is something like $6.00 for every 10,000 sessions and a session is defined as an hour of use per user if I understand it correctly. Go to the link below and you can download the PDF contract. This would solve the issues of copyrighted music.

    http://www.ascap.com/weblicense/

  170. WENDY..

i do not know if that is technically possible, but i will check…yes, we have all gotten a bit used to the “recent comments” as some kind of guide, but let an hour pass and you will miss the “recent comment” where you last posted…but, remember the old blog?? we always had to go back to either the beginning or the end and figure out where we left off…so, this way is still much easier than before..and the comment posting in general is way easier…remember the codes we had to punch in for every comment?? anyway, i will find out for you…

    cheers, david

  171. KATIA…

i think we all live in fear of lost pictures one way or another…i am so so pleased to learn that our friends here came to your rescue…and why did they do that? because you are real..because you live the life…and your mission with these street kids is pure…good deeds do not always bear rewards, but good deeds CAN lead to other good deeds and this is what we all must live for…i look forward to seeing your work….

    cheers, hugs, david

  172. MARCIN…

now you know i love the Poles….and you know i plan to come to Poland…and you know i can feel your pride in so many Poles winning in World Press ..super congratulations!!

BUT for those of us who speak and write Latin based languages, how are we supposed to remember how to spell or pronounce those Polish names??? laughing at my own inadequacy….

    love you Marcin…peace, david

  173. DAVID

ha, ha, ha… yes we all know that… we poles are crazy staring from names… and I remember all this surprised faces when I introduce myself :)
Do you know how pronounce MY name or first name :)))))
Come to Poland, you are very famous here! Maybe some exhibition?

    peace

  174. DAVID–

    you’re a dear..

i cannot wait to meet you
and i cannot wait for you to meet my kids!!
that thought makes me so happy. :))

    love you,

    katia

    ‘mama d.’

  175. DAH,
I just checked the submission guidelines for EPF. I remember reading somewhere earlier that the images submitted should be from 2008 or later. Is that correct?
    Thanks!

    Cheers

  176. DAH

just mailed anton my effort for work in progress and he thinks we have a way of making more posts over the month.. please check words and phots when you have time and we´ll see how the section pans out – really looking forward to a grilling and will be looking for lucky jims tough love .. hohoho. :ø)
    with many thanks indeed.

been away doing my own thing for a while.. lots to catch up on here.. garages, filthy hotels and saucy ladies… it almost feels like i´m back freelancing in music ..

going to sink into the comments sections later..

    peace all and hello again.
    davidx

  177. So I was in the wicked city yesterday photographing the indigenous wildlife in its native habitat and I didnt see anyone from Burn. Where were you guys? You spend your weekends wallowing in the fleshpots and chasing strumpets and doing whatever else people do in the big city on weekends and on Monday you’re so hung over you can’t get out of bed in the morning. A good thing I spend all of my time here in our happy little burg, where the air is clear and the crazies are stoned only on alternate Tuesdays during Lent.

  178. ALL….

one quick comment and one quick question…

i PROMISE to write a story here when i return home from Oaxaca (best weather in the world)….with BURN, the extra duty of editing all that comes in has left me with less time to write as i did on Road Trips, but i should be clear for a bit after this trip…i also am going to assign some of you to write…and i do see an editing marathon coming up on our last three years here…take all of the comments and stitch them together and there is some interesting kind of book to be made…you know me..always always thinking books books….more on that later…

the question is: do all of you see or know about the little red button in the right hand corner of Essays that allows you full screen viewing during the slide shows?? many tell me they never knew it, others tell me “well, sure everybody knows THAT”….so which is it?? know or don’t know…need more of an indicator??

ok, off to shoot…wishing all a good day….

    cheers, david

  179. DAVID BOWEN..

anxious to have you up soonest on “work in progress”….i did view already all of your work…rushing now, but back to you soonest….

    let’s roll my friend…

    cheers, david

  180. david :))

didnt know about the red button until i looked at Panos’ essay…although i knew the pics were ‘viewable’ full screen…i think, somehow, this should be more prominent…cause for some story, it’s a necessity in order to see the images’ detail or texture (bones)…and for me, it also allows me to stand away from the computer and watch the shows…which is what i’ve subsequently done for ALL THE ESSAYS…it’s a great great feature!…and one maybe that should be given more attention, as i suspect that many dont know about it…even though the button is red ;)))))….maybe a line of text beneath the title of the essay like ‘click hear for full screen version’…old dogs like me see tend to read text before the intuitive sense of icons ;)))))…

    happy shooting

    hugs
    b

  181. No; I didn’t know what the button did. I personally like the smaller view as I find I can see the composition of a photograph better – the way it holds together. I hate bled-to-the-edge photographs in magazines (especially Nat Geo who should know better). I always think that it does not show respect to the photograph or photographer.

Oaxaca sounds wonderful! Here in North of England we have light drizzle and it feels as if the light has been switched off. It has been like this for days! I hunger for some decent light.

Good shooting to all of you in Oaxaca,

    Mike R.

  182. I did know about the button, but was apprehensive about using it for fear of the slide shows locking up and not running smoothly. Finally used it for Bob’s essay, and found that my worry about bandwidth was unwarranted; the full screen function gives a completely different viewing experience while remaining smooth. Bones was more powerful and effective full screen than it was bound up in a small frame. I imagine the other essays would be as well.

The issue now in my internet-induced haste to see each image, is that I often forget the button is there, and miss out on a more immersive experience. Definitely think it could be more prominent because it’s a great feature. I do wish I could click through faster on subsequent viewings of essays though.

    andrew

  183. I live in the US..
    I don’t cross red lights…
I don’t click or touch on “red” things or buttons..
    unless it’s a skirt…
    Love y’all…
    I’m scared of red…!!!!
    :)))))

  184. ANDREW…

hey amigo, your essay is coming soon…many have seen it, but now they can see it full screen if they so choose…

i also wish we had the feature (like the New York Times Magazine) where we could more easily click through and back and forth….evidently, that is a higher tech thing than what we have now and would take a full time tech person to put this into play…looks simpler, but is technically more complex…we just do not have that person..yet!!! Anton is overworked as it is..

when are you coming to New York??…would love to meet…

    cheers, david

  185. fantastic – really looking forward to feedback..
getting right on top of the editing now.. 300 small prints done.. pairing up photos.. working out little stories within the stories..

same as ever, making prints eases the nerves and makes everything just that little more positive..
    thanks
    david

  186. The red button was mentioned in an early comment and I’ve been using it ever since. I love watching the essay full screen; it takes me into the world created by the photographer. But I doubt if I ever would have found that option on my own. I guess you could post a note in italics under the introductory text for each essay. A bit of a bother for you & Anton but it would help all newcomers…of which I’m sure there are many.

    Patricia

  187. C’mon lurkers …
    Get involved.. I’m bored here..
Ain’t it all about the money…!!
    Right????

  188. I recall reading on Burn… Dimensions and such for slideshows.. submissions.. uh, built in Flash.. Am I stoned? did I see this? Can anyone point me to this note, thread, post.. the nearest bar?

    Valeu!

    Tim

  189. but dear dearest Patricia… why Magnum…. why not Burn ???
Burn is Magnum’s child… can’t you see??? you already belong, and been published
    at the Burn ( Magnum’s baby ) magazine…
Dont you see the honor ????????? How much more “magnum” do you want ??????
    ( kiddin’….)
    ;-)))))))))))))))

  190. TO ALL-

I just received a message that our friend James Chance has been selected by Anthropographia is for the photojournalism competition on human rights with his essay on “Living With The Dead: Manila’s North Cemetery”. So pleasing to see this… James is well placed among a few reknown PJ’s so he should be very proud and somehow we all saw this essay developed on Road Trips…. Congrats James!

    Eric

  191. Hey Eric! Thanks for the note. Yes, I found out about this yesterday and am pretty chuffed as you might imagine —esp as I have a great amount of respect for some of the other nominees. I think all of the work will be featured in an exhibition in Montreal and will then possibly tour after that. Here is a link to the award It says that the complete essays will available after April 1st (just single images from each person for now).

  192. JAMES:

BIG CONGRATULATIONS MATE! :)))…strange, i left a comment yesterday here congratulating you and it seems to have vanished??…some weird comment formatting lately…but so, ok, i’ll repeat:

big big happiness for that as you know i’ve always loved the story and even great to see it play out on Road Trips…and am just happy to know that…and if by any chance the show goes to Montreal and you go, let me know….maybe we can go, or you can drop by Toronto :)))

    again, so happy for you!….hugs
    bob

  193. Thanks Bob! I’m glad you reposted as I did miss you message. I would love to get up to Montreal, but i’m so flat broke after last years adventures it’s hard right now. It would be great to meet up with you and Mike! Anyways I encourage you to get there if you can as there are a number of events what with the awards and the film festival. I’ll keep you posted as to if I make the trip or not.

  194. JAMES…

super congratulations on being nominated for the Anthropographia award..i am working right now with Anton to see if we can get your essay up soonest…my only worry is that as is , it is a bit long in my opinion…but, if you want to stand by it and be prepared for comments, so be it…you know i always tip my hat to the photographer…

    cheers, david

  195. keep me posted James…i’ll through a small soiree….i’ll have a little get together when YOung Man Harvey comes to town for CONTACT….do the same for u…

i’ll see Mike tonight to give a send off to my friend Arantxa (who is leaving for Cambodia and about to befriend Mr. Vink!)….so, i’ll give him a hug for you! :))

    hugs
    running
    bob

  196. Oh I do love a good soiree! When is Harvey up? Yes, please say hi to Mike for me. Saw his work bang center on the Oskar B award page. Nice! Although your friend will be in good hands with Vink. She can feel free to drop me a line if she needs any info on Cambodia.

  197. BOB…

yes, i noticed something i had written had disappeared as well….there is definitely some sort of glitch….anyway, Anton and i meet on Sunday to go over tech problems etc…we will fix it (he will fix it!!)..

  198. James,

Also got the email down here in the caribe and want to send my congrats..can’t read much on a phone but this came thru loud and clear!

  199. Hey David. Yeah the piece is five minutes, this is how it has been edited for a while now. I think if we go ahead as-is, i’ll take the flak if the general consensus agrees with you. You know i’m not too precious! All the feedback will be very useful i’m sure.

  200. A Long time – It’s been months since I’ve had the convenience of having internet from home. Finally AT&T laid in fiber optics and we’re in business. DAH – I was thinking, maybe having specific people, I mean it’s kind of this way already with the daily photos, but specific people could start a topic and post with their name? is that a possibility?

  201. David,

You continue your legacy in classic David Alan Harvey style. This site is so wonderful and inspirational. Thanks for all the free, hard work you’re doing on behalf of others. It’s deeply and sincerely appreciated, and I know I speak on behalf of many. And thanks to all the photographers posting such powerful work.

    Mil gracias,
    John

  202. You continue your legacy in classic David Alan Harvey style.

    nope!
    He, is still emerging…
    ;-)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
