Really hard work as I dubt in every single picture, specialy because some really work in b&w and some others in color and I think I should keep unity on that…. anyway, thanks for your words. Will go for it!!

i once was told by a national newspaper ed in the uk to not be shy about pushing stories to them – they take everything with the same weight whether it be a pitch from magnum or a pitch from XXXXX.. a good pieve of work is a good piece of work.

go for it in the way you are most comfortable with.. different strokes and all..

main thing is to go for it.. as there is a market for everything :o)

And it is true, as DAVID BOWEN points, it can be a great marketing tool. The potencial client (magazine) sees your work, how it looks like all edited and together and then is interested in publishing. It may work. But I don’t know why I’m still a bit skeptical or afraid to show those reports. And probably I’m wrong and I’m lossing oportunities acting like this. Maybe I should try sohwing some, but not all. Like kepping one card in my pocket ;-)
By the way, I’m preparing some series for portfolios reviews. For sure I will show them then! :-D

i agree with ig..
it could be a great marketing tool – perhaps if the work was password protected, the client would feel better?

i tend to keep a client up to date with everything i am doing as i am going along.. editors would get a weekly phone-call, or every couple of weeks, where i would tell them whats going on.. whats worth coverage and whether i will be able to organize all the elements myself… it would sometimes need them to offer formal accreditation, particularly if i was trying to blag some money out of a tourist board for flights or hotel.

there is nothing more satisfying than selling a piece which you have conceived, planned, found funding and shot entirely by yourself, is there?
many congrats.. more of that for all of us i hope.

unless it all goes horribly wrong, of course.. (here is a ‘boring story’)
* cue L.a. *
the festival was pulled by paranoid police while i was on the plane to cover it.. then the magazine pulled out..
consisted of 40 hours spent scrambling around L.a. to various random house parties and eventually ‘spundee’ at circus, i think..
writing and photographing a story about the ‘anti rave’ laws and then trying to sell it on return to the u.k… to a magazine for peanuts in order to justify the trip to funding bodies and keep the P.R’s sweet.. hmm..
i remember sitting having steak and eggs at a breakfast bar on venice beech.. head in hands.. pen on a blank piece of paper.. hung-over.. blahblahblah..
sold 2000 words and three pages to a u.k. magazine for 400usd a week later.. :o)

I think it may even work the other way. I published some work in after showing a preview/slideshow on my website.

In this case, I published a six page story (photos and text) afer this was online for a little while:

I understand a magazine would not be pleased to find assigned work online before publication though.

cheers,

I agree with you and that is how I act. When a magazine gives me an assignment, they are the first to have it and see it. That’s for sure.

Lately I have been doing some personal reports and published some pictures in different magazines and newspaper more or less at the same time, but they requested the pictures after I took them.

But I have some finished personal projects that can be published in magazines as a complete report. Till now, non of those projects have seen “the light”, even in my web site or blog because I thought that showing them around was a way to reduce its originality or exclusivity. But, in the other hand and because I’m a very insecure person, I would love to share them and get other’s opinion…. And…. at the same time, it is very interesting to have all my projects available on my site so people interested can see what I do… But will a magazine be interested in publishing a report that everybody can see in a website?

I knew about Strazzante’s work: the rethoric of contrast perfectly suits his work since he is dealing with “how it was” and “how it is” and he built the visual flow around this concept. In your case the choice is more subtle and it adds a lot, in terms of style, to the whole story which is focused on the many aspects of “how it is”.

Thank you Spencer, David Bowen, Katharina, Ana, Panos, Harry, and everyone who commented, here and in private.

>I truly love the last picture, shot at midnight or something?

Daytime, stormy sky and some sun coming through the clouds.

ERICA

Thank you for the astrology link, a fascinating read.

>I would think some text about Operation Musashi (if that is what it is) at the beginning of the show would be helpful to most, as I think it may be a bit hard for many to discern right off the bat if these are whalers or conservationists.

You are correct. The photos are from Sea Shepherd’s first time in Antarctica. Musashi is their next campaign, 2008-2009.

>are you somehow involved with conservation?

I would like to be more involved. I’ve only photographed Sea Shepherd’s first antarctica campaign, another against seal hunting in Canada, and some work involving sea turtles here in Brazil.

ANDREW B

>I’m curious as to what the flags/symbols (the skull&crossbones and others) on the side of the ship mean?

http://www.lost.art.br/antarctica_mon_amour_07.htm

The flags are ships Sea Shepherd has sunk, disabled, or otherwise stopped from illegal whaling. The most notorious is the Sierra, sunk after being rammed repeatedly in 1979 in Porto, Portugal. Paul Watson’s book Ocean Warrior (ISBN 1-904132-25-1) tells this story in detail.

I stayed extra days in NY. Am still here actually . Won’t be home until Saturday night, so I’m afraid I’ll be crashing on Sunday. A 700 mile drive alone can be rather wearing! Sorry I wont be able to join you this time…

the circumstances vary, although i have always kept a strong eye on ethics.

if it’s my pitch i have often sold the similar stories to multiple magazines – each magazine knew about the other and they all got exclusive photos.

if i am commissioned it only goes to that magazine and after the event i have often tried to throw the photos around free press and blogs to try to help the people concerned in the story.

the main thing i have always done is
be honest with everyone and keep talking to make things clear
always deliver what i have promised.

it is amazing how many photographers fall down on these basic hurdles.

in my experience magazines want someone who;
a knows their stuff, photographically and concerning the story
b delivers on time edited and easy to drop-in work (print ready)
c doesn’t bullshit… make excuses.. or betray agreements

thinking now – most commissions / sold pieces have varied in the way they have worked.. no two have been identical, either iin gaining the funding / commission or in the selling / publishing of the work.
i’ve always asked questions, clarified points and tried to never feel stupid for asking what may seem to be obvious questions.. worked for me :o)

i really do see this blog as the exception though.. and happily will post work here as and when i can.

interesting chat ..

PANOS.. here we are ‘you and me’.. yes all vulnerabilities welcome in this house.

MARCIN.. oh man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! kelly pointed out that i have about eight ‘piles’ going on at my desk.. your prints are here!

ERICA.. wonderful feedback.. you pointed out things that are obvious to me now that you mention them… working working on it! :) last weekend we talked about me getting on a real bull.. i said, maybe just one of those little trainer bulls.. and their response: “It’s better if you just get on a big ol’ behemoth because when he knocks you off he’ll send you flyin’.. where a little bull you’ll just fall off and he might stomp on you.” makes sense to me. ???

HERVE… thanks.. so last weekend i got ‘in the ring’ and almost got my head taken off.. when those bulls get you in their sights, you better make a plan QUICK.

CATHY.. yes, we are working on projects that have ‘been done’ a million times.. and been done very well i might add.. although i can’t lose sight of this, i try not to think about it. instead i think about ‘what do I NEED to show?’ this is part of David’s message. BUT, it still has to be done WELL! Also, every-time i see “Cowboy prayer with ass” i LAUGH.. i took a series of those shooting from the hip.. it would have been rude of me to kneel down and look through the viewfinder during prayer. :)

AUDREY.. just like a workshop.. this is fun.. thank you. :)

SEAN.. wrote you on facebook.. i dig the new Olympics work.. that FLASH – “Look HERE dammit!” :)

AMBJ.. good question.. really i feel this project as something i can keep coming back to until, perhaps if i’m lucky enough, there can be enough material for a book. i feel like i owe it to these guys. this web-site stuff doesn’t lend itself to book-length projects.. SO, it’s a balance.. also, I’m capturing a fair bit of audio and at some point i’ll make a multi-media piece.. i have more writing and notes taking up space around here.. lots to do still..

AMBJ.. you have some incredible shots in there.. the moth i just could not take my eyes off of.. for the story though… having looked at the pictures first and then the text second, i had no clue that it was related to kidney failure.. the plane yes now it makes sense.. when will you go back? it’s a wonderful wonderful project i hope you will continue! gorgeous pics..

D BOWEN.. yes yes… getting close.. it takes TIME.. and i love the lessons i learn along the way. i can’t help but appreciate all that this project is teaching me, looking forward to future endeavors.

ABELE.. yes, this visual ‘flow’ is something i’ve learned from DAVID and also our friend Ben Krain.. when i see it, i use it… i love the way it works.

RUNNING BOB.. yes, you have picked up on this ‘bite’ of the story from the very beginning.. i naturally see things darkly and lonely… it’s my nature to see this way. one reason this project has been a natural fit for me.. although i would have never guessed i’d be shooting ‘rodeo’ a couple of years ago.. little did i know.. still more work to be done and your words ring clearly throughout this project..

exactly my LS scenario..thank you

OHHHH I am so behind suddenly, my goal was to get your package sent today, but I am not sure I will make it. P.O. lines here are nothing to sneeze at..I promise to do it before I take off..right now every daylight minute counts..scanning furiously to see where i am before I shoot again tomorrow, (just realized as soon as school is in session Sept. 2 I won’t be able to shoot in my spot and will probably have to wrap up the project, its at a schoolyard, so am feeling pressed as I am away from the city 2 more times in August) and have to get to the city to buy film/ drop off film and :) meet Patricia..I’ll let you know as soon as I send it out! apologies

I couldn’t log into LS either, figured I’d forgotten my password (again)…so I reset it. That worked, but then I wasn’t verified (can’t post). did the email verification thing, got the email and clicked and it said account verified, but still can’t post…looks like it’s acting up again today….

Did you get my email?

I am sure when the story is essayed and edited, compacted, the word island may fit better than now.

Likewise, as with so many essays (whose pictures don’t always speak for themselves), I hope to see text and captions later on.

At this point, the pictures are a loose bunch concerning the very specifics of the subject. Certainly, we all would love for David to barge in and lend his educated eye on your project, as photography goes.

I can see what you mean about the name being confusing. It’s called the Island of widows because the name of the neighborhood is the Island, as it is surrounded on all sides by the sugar plantation. There is so much of the “story” that’s left out right now…thank you for your comments, they are indeed helpful as I chug along…

ANA

I wonder the same thing…I understand the general rules, but with blogs now these days, I don’t know where that falls in terms of work being “new and unpublished”. That might be a good question for David!
