hey hey - missed this.. wrot to you in the 'new' thread first.

brilliant.. i'm not so young anymore.
after-parties are starting to scare the bejesus out of me.. too many shapes being pulled and some strange animals to be sure.. to be sure..
will see how it works out.. afterparties feel more like 'the quickening' form the highlander these days.. although i can still be tempted.. mm..

in any case - i'll make supreme efforts to get there in may. would be wonderful to dance.. i'll dig out my corduroy jacket with leather patches on the elbows to complete the geography teacher look i have been perfecting.
dancing has always been about fun, as you know very well i'm sure.. dancing areobics.. crawling through peoples legs who keep them to wide while they groove.. and teh dance moves like diggin a hole.. pouring a pint.
even dancing around the shoe.. praise the shoe.

mind working now.. i'll bet i can find a client and maybe get them to fund it.. at least for a hotel..

will be a grand little gathering?

DAVID B

WAHOO!!! David Bowen dances with Grandma Techno, Motown, May 2009! Now THERE'S a hot thought to keep us warm during the long cold winter months! Wonder if we could get any other Road Trippers to join us? Hey, Anton, any chance???

David, here are a couple links to check out:

http://www.myspace.com/detroitmusicfest

http://www.pbase.com/windchimewalker/demf_07

The second is pics I took & posted in '07. Not great but they give you an idea. At least an idea of the fest itself. Now, from what I understand, the REAL festival happens all night & into the morning hours at the afterparties. That's why you'll want to stay at a motel or hotel right downtown. Ed and I are too far out for you to be able to do it as it deserves to be done. You've got to be at the CENTER of the action!!!

In terms of dates, I just looked up Memorial Day weekend 2009. Movement 09: DEMF will be Saturday, May 23-Monday, May 25, 2009. But the parties start on Thursday & Friday.

Love to you, Beate & the little dancer (!).

yesyes - i think may 2009 will be likely.. would love to see motown.. god.. thats where my journey in music all began.. then house music..

it is essential isn't it? yes.. one more party.. just one more..
hohoho.

interesting that you mention film.. it's been an ambition for a long while to make a film about it all.. perhaps put some of the more extreme happenings into a one month time frame.. 4 commissions in the life of a photographer and writer who cannot afford the life they live.. the twists required to get the money to do the job.. the oddness along the way.. then back home.. to living in a bedsit or a studio.. eating beans on toast for 4 or 5 days then back to it..

5 star living, part time... limos, champagne and beans on toast...
i'm going to write some of what we got up to..
yes.
picture scene -
myself and a writer in an airport elevator.. a suited business man jumps in as the doors are closing.. 'magic' jason looks at me..
'david - will we take our clothes off?'
'yes.. why not?' i reply..

baby boy is due 9th october .. boy he kicks like a dancer.. a better one than me i'll warrent.
i'm going to keep the name a surprise for now :o)

as an aside.. my lover is beate..
together we ARE DnB
hohoho.

will do that may 2009.. no problem.
love ya boots

it is essential isn't it? yes.. one more party.. just one more..
hohoho.

interesting that you mention film.. it's been an ambition for a long while to make a film about it all.. perhaps put some of the more extreme happenings into a one month time frame..

'yes.. why not?' i reply..

baby boy is due 9th october .. boy he kicks like a dancer.. a better one than me i'll warrent.
i'm going to keep the name a surprise for now :o)

as an aside.. my lover is beate..
together we ARE DnB
hohoho.

will do that may 2009.. no problem.

There probably is a trend to photography from different countries, but is it disappearing? Im Polish, but because Ive lived all around (Canada, US, now Korea) I dont think I shoot in a Polish way. But then again I dont shoot in a Korean way or an American way or a Canadian way (is there such a thing as Candian photography?). I think its less the country of origin or even where you have always lived and more the influences youve picked up along the way that shape you, maybe with a dash of seasoning from your nationality/culture.

DAVID B

I just got into my Super 8 motel room in Syracuse, NY--only 200 miles from tomorrow's destination!--and the first thing I did was look at your photos. As a hardcore EM-lover, man, I am BLOWN AWAY!!! You have SO captured the ambience, energy, craziness, sweetness, rawness of it all. I LOVE IT!!! And at the bottom of one of the blog entries, you ask, "Do I need to include Detroit, the home of House music?" As a Detroiter myself, you can imagine my response. God, man, you've got to come to the Mecca!!! DEMF, the last weekend in May 2009. BE HERE!!! Wait a minute. When is your baby due? It may not work for you to travel this year, but SOME year. Please!

And your book is going to be a smash hit. We EM folks love nothing better than to see ourselves in our element. Of course, I see it as a film documentary with LOUD sound! Oh yes.

GUIDO...

you have asked a very good question...

i do not think we are YET artistically globalized...

all of us can see the clear artistic lines from one culture to another...i see totally different styles between Eastern Europeans, and Japanese and Scandinavians and French and Germans and Americans and well, of course, you Italians have it all!!! (didn't Caravaggio "invent" light???)..why aren't there more Spanish photographers?? everyone asks this question all the time, but that is another issue...

perhaps the biggest "jump" in style goes to Japan and Korea.....no Westerner could do this work...

Scianna i love...both the man and much his work....sorry i have not quoted him, i have not quoted many photogs i admire, but Scianna is a "real Italian"..Sicily!!! of course, the best part of Scianna is when he gets mad...wow, what a show!!!!

cheers, david

DAVID:

Thanks for the detailed response. It was great, really. The feedback you have given is similar to what the editor told me, although they were looking for one night time cityscape type shot to give the photo essay a sense of place. I have some time, granted a week to pull something like this off, so I'm going for it. And no worries, your honesty is exactly what I was looking for.

The part about "tried and true" photography is a conversation we can leave for another day, maybe even in Perpignan as I will be there this year from Tuesday on, so I'm game to catch up there. In any event I understand exactly what you are talking about.

Thanks again! This is just the feedback I needed to get motivated to get back out there.

all the best,
Charlie

SEAN

I think we met briefly at the LOOK3 friday night artist reception... I am going to Perpignan - but have a full room right now. Let me see if I can ask a few people at NG if they have floor space or something. I'll see what I can do....
