driving….

Mike_and_jeep

Mike waiting for me to finish this post..the boy wants to hit the road!!!!!!

i must check out of my Iowa motel right now….heading for Chicago or somewhere near Chicago…i was reading comments, looking at links and made the comment below….i decided this might make a good post , so here it is:

HELLO ALL….VERY IMPORTANT!!!

do any of you ever go look at the links posted by forum readers under "student work/workshops"???

there are a lot of photographers here who never write, but who do
have some very interesting work…right now there are about 175
links…please check them out…

for those of you who have posted links, please be assured that I DO
LOOK….it is from this "pool" of work, as well as photographers on
assignment here, that i am looking for photographers to fund with the
Emerging Photographer Fund this fall….

my only problem with some of your links posted is that there is no
contact information for some of you…i cannot review the work of all
of you, but when i see someone with very interesting work, i would like
to make contact…

maybe what i should do is look at all links and then post the names
of photographers with whom i would either like to see more or make
contact…make sense??? just as an example, i randomly clicked on the
link of Sofia Quintas and saw some Polaroids of hers that were very
very interesting and nothing like the work she had submitted for the
EPF last fall..but, i have no way to contact her…

yes, yes, i am very busy shooting…and i hope all of you are as
well..but, i do pay attention to what is happening here … because i
am doing my own work it does mean there are "lapses" in my posting
here, but this forum has taken on a life of its own, and i do not
intend to let it slide away…..

only a very small percentage of what is going on in my head ends up
in print on this forum, but do not for a nanosecond think that i am not
aware of your work…

I KNOW WHO IS DOING WHAT…but, if you think i have missed something of yours , please tell me so….

i cannot review every link nor edit all of you…but, i will see
your work and remember your work and "bookmark" your work.. i want to
make sure that all of the best will have a very fair and equal chance
at being considered for my jury this fall…

in the next month or so i want to have a very clear head about all
of the amazing work that is being produced by readers of this
forum…there is a lot going on and it is sometimes difficult for all
of us to keep up..but, i intend to keep up….and i will…

right now, i am waiting for assignments to be finished from
Bob,Cristina, Marcin, Erica, Jonathan, Kyunghee Lee, Audrey,Panos,
Sébastian, Eric, David M, and Patricia… as far as i know, i think
only James is finished…this is right off the top of my head, so
please correct me if i am wrong or have missed someone who is shooting
right now on assignment…

i will clear a space under Emerging Photographers on this site to
publish your essays when they are complete…and , of course, i am
ready to make new assignments when appropriate…

it is basically from these assignments that the EPF jury will choose
photographers for funding this fall….a photographer who posts a link
under "student work/workshops" will also be totally eligible, but
naturally photographers who are developing here before my "eyes" are
just going to have a better chance i think…

please do not think of this EPF as a contest….a contest is a one time award for a good picture or essay..goodbye…

do you not think i am still tracking very carefully the China essay of Sean Gallagher, last year’s recipient of the EPF???

our forum and EPF is about LONG TERM development and
RELATIONSHIP…think of this more like a relationship with a
traditional print magazine where photographers present their work and
editors decide "who will do what" based on the work and the editor’s
judgment on who is capable of completing any particular
essay…subjective yes, but it will all happen right in front of you as
it has in the past..

yes, we are traveling together into totally new territory…the "old
territories" are either gone or going away….fast…so, what have we
got to lose??? nothing that i can see…

your ideas, thoughts and most importantly YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS have a
place right here…A HOME….there are no "bosses"…this is just me
driving down the highway, taking my own pictures , looking at yours,
and having a jolly good time doing both….

peace, david

p.s. i am still reading and responding to  comments under the previous post "how the west was won"

  • @DAVID BOWEN: welcome to the tormented souls of DAH’s blog. Hum. I really like some shots, they seem to overcome music scene cliches. (Specifically, girl with bubblegum, girls sitting down with ferry in the background, people in jacuzzi.)

@DAH: trust me, I do shoot with a beer in my hand (as seen in some focusing deficiencies every now and then…) :o) (oh, I meant by not being able to operate the rangefinder, not because of seeing blurry)

  • Joni, I bought to myself Olympus XA2 on ebay in 17€ !! Thank you!! I risk to ask from you advice!!

  • JONI….

oh, i had no doubt you had a beer in your hand too!!!! yes, operating the range finder of a Leica with a beer in your left hand can present problems for your summicron…of course, as soon as you get the beer down to half full or less, then the problem lessens…i am sure you know the beer bottle does make an adequate “barpod” should you be working with slow shutter speeds…i do not like beer out of can, but the can makes an even better barpod…

    ERICA…

alas, i will not be around on friday after all…Magnum gathering in the Hamptons for a swim and a burger…back on the 10th…will call…sorry to miss you this week…

    cheers, david

  • David,
:) funny things happened after I wrote first e-mail for you. I started Dance Studios project in 2006 but because it’s hard to find a place they let me work there, I’ve just photographed 5 classes till now cuz I became more engaged with Rooms and I was tired of so many NO answers I was received I put it aside for a while. last week when I was searching in my archive I looked at them again and I remember I haven’t had a big NO from some of my connections yet then I call them again and by chance two of them worked at last and now I have a time for photography in the week coming, by chance I saw Wendy’s pictures from a ballet class in Tehran and again by chance (!) one of my friend who liked the pictures (she saw them 5 or 6 months ago) called me to say she talked and show pictures to a galley in Washington and they are interested
what are you thinking? do they have the capacity to be shown in an exhibition?

  • @DAH: nothing beats a pile of 5-7 pint glasses one inside another as a barpod. And the width of mouth of the british pint assures that it fits perfectly a number of different cameras (amazingly well a yashica mat, for 6×6).

@Audrey: congratulations! I hope you have fun with that little beauty! (Ask anytime, but it is an easy little beast.)

  • David, I know they are more interested to DS pix because of their subject than their quality
I am thinking about what you wrote for Charley and the way you suggested, actually it was in my mind from the day I saw emerging photographers sellection or when I was looking at magnum new members portfolios. somehow it wasn’t clear for me… what you wrote in that post made me thinking more about ” times have changed…tastes have changed “

  • Thanks everyone for the congratulations. I managed to swing a ticket so I will be in Brooklyn on Saturday night. I’m excited to see all of the work.

ERICA and GINA… Will you be there Saturday? I’d love to meet up for a bit. Is anyone else going to go on Saturday?

DAVID… Will you be around your place (packing, maybe?) on Saturday early-afternoon?I’d love to stop by for a brief visit. I am a great packer if you need some help. If not, I’ll see you somewhere in the world soon, I’m sure.

AUDREY… Your words were very kind. Cheers.
JOAN… I wrote back to your email. I hope you received it.
SEAN… I really enjoyed the piece on Asia and pollution that you were part of. Well done and thanks for sharing.

  • CATHY, ERICA, JOAN, MIKE

I appreciate your concern! Erica, I can only imagine what was going through your head as you watched food fly off the shelves…!! :) Cathy, I’m thankful your hairdresser (and the sharp instruments he/she uses to trim) were nowhere near your head. And, yes, it’s mind-boggling that some people simply don’t feel a thing!

    RYAN

My cellphone wouldn’t make calls either… Good to know it’s useful in an emergency.

    CATHY + PANOS

You guys want to shoot together while Cathy is here/near?

  • RYAN

p.s. 2 babies?? You’ve multiplied. Is this a new addition??

for the love of jesu.. that is praise.
you cheered me up.. i caught a cod and a mackerel fishing, then the rod snapped, so i was a bit pissed.

many thanks indeed.. deeply and sincerely.. thank you. a little voice in my head has been telling me i’m not welcome back into the photography fold after 10 years ‘away’, as it were.

you’re quite right about beer of course.. actually a beer in one hand was the least of it, mi amigo.. a silver platter of potions.. covering all eventualities.. tough skin a pre-requisite.. then, where would you like to go to today sir?
being visually fixated, you can probably guess my favorite tipples…. i’ll not dirty your ‘house’ with such talk though.

i’ll start to post some of my writing in the blog.. some of the stranger happenings.. and there have been some strange ones.. yeps.
    it is over for now..
it’s been over for a good while now..
    6 months at least :o/
i figured the stories could accompany some photos for context..
    ‘photographs and notebooks’

    plenty more photos to come..
all shot on film of course, (the days wait was always a treat..)

the whole thing was a trip to be honest..
unexpected and most pleasurable… although i had a girlfriend for 6 of the years and even when she got sick of my being away and left me i never indulged in too much of the.. well.. filth…
some of it smelt bad to me.. and towards the end of the ten years promoters liked me working because i also acted as ‘party-policeman’..
…which worked fine until one night in 2006 i prevented something particularly rotten.. then i was spiked with sleeping tablets.. stripped.. eyebrows shaved and obscenities written and drawn over my body in permanent marker.

that was a tough journey home, but, you know… the eyebrows grew back.. :o)

i always felt very peripheral .. i’m not even sure if i was ever that comfortable in the crowd to be honest…
i loved photographing it, but talking about it bored me somewhat.. i danced like a geography teacher, took my photos, enjoyed the gibberish chat and all the good animals and then hit the hotel bar.
i once thought i was a polar bear, but in fact i’m a dinosaur :o)

i tried to be invisible and mostly was.. i got a technique down for being very quick.. pre-focus, ambient reading on the light-show.. set up manual, flash off camera obviously, and that created an ‘in-focus bubble’ around the subjects.. then look for the busiest part of the room.. walk around the edge and snap… sometimes looked through the viewfinder.. i know the coverage of my lenses very well.. lots of fun..

    joni

thanks.. when i started it was film and so there were none of the ‘digital pretenders’ who flock to clubs and spoil the crowd, for websites like ’till-late.com’… the industry has collapsed to a degree and i doubt there are many oportunities to do what i did anymore.. perhaps with two or three titles, although on the whole it’s getting a lot tougher.

was always about the photos – the mag wanted dj shots and then i could please myself..
there are a bunch of cliche shots – it’s only after a few years doing it that you start to see the common views, no?
i used to just test flash my sb28 to pacify people who grabbed me to ‘take their picture’.. dull.. dull.
everything clicks after a few years and you know what to try and avoid..

    david mc

thanks – will have a look.. it’s always good to find photographers working music venues rather than music fans freeloading :o)
the distiction is clear to me.
i was a resident photographer for a promoter / label called renaissance 99 till 2001.. i showed them photos from india.. not a single party photo.
DJ magazine – my longest client – i first showed my exhibition concerning tibetans in exile.
    they want photographers

    brilliant fun.
just a great subject to shoot.

    erica.

ha – someone elses phone.. yes..

actually, it was.. in space, ibiza i believe.. a girls phone.. hmm..

i was much more interested in testing the bounds of reality than the sex..
you know.. everone has the same ‘bits’ after a while.. but behaving like a child in public.. thats endless fun…
whichever writer i was working with there were special ‘tricks’ we would play. other people must have hated us.. but we had a lot of fun.
    hunter thompson was a lightweight.

you”re right about individual people as well.. they are the photos which interest me most.. individual groovers or little pockets of gorgeousness.. then the struggling people.. isolated..
so strange how a ‘fun’ environment could be so tough at times.

    ____

    so – to come.
    more.
    much more.
    of everything.

    :o)

    thanks again all..
    means alot.
means i’ve not wasted ten years.
    that much.

i loved photographing it, but talking about it bored me somewhat.. i danced like a geography teacher, took my photos, enjoyed the gibberish chat and all the good animals and then hit the hotel bar.

i tried to be invisible and mostly was.. i got a technique down for being very quick.. pre-focus, ambient reading on the light-show.. set up manual, flash off camera obviously, and that created an ‘in-focus bubble’ around the subjects.. then look for the busiest part of the room.. walk around the edge and snap… sometimes looked through the viewfinder.. i know the coverage of my lenses very well.. lots of fun..

thanks.. when i started it was film and so there were none of the ‘digital pretenders’ who flock to clubs and spoil the crowd, for websites like ’till-late.com’… the industry has collapsed to a degree and i doubt there are many oportunities to do what i did anymore.. perhaps with two or three titles, although on the whole it’s getting a lot tougher.

was always about the photos – the mag wanted dj shots and then i could please myself..
there are a bunch of cliche shots – it’s only after a few years doing it that you start to see the common views, no?

  • DAH (and everybody who wants to give an opinion),

if you’re still around (probably not) I have a question for you.
    You wrote:
“you (david bowen) and Panos have a beer in one hand and a camera in the other….but Panos’ work is more tragic (yes, Greek tragedy), sometimes sad…”

Do you think the geographic (and historical) background of a photographer always comes out, more or less, or we are all “globalized” by now, expecially the new generations?
Do you see in my countrymen photographers any sort of “italian touch”, those you personally know at least, such as Majoli, Pellegrin or Scianna (btw, question in the question, i never read you quoting Ferdinando Scianna, he’s a longtime Magnum member, isnt he? what do you think of his work?)

    thanks and ciao
enjoy italy (too hot these days)

  • Hey Charlie, I’d be interested to learn more about the legal limbo you mention of the africans in your story.

Is Spain really releasing in the wilderness of its urban centers, people who have no identification? Therefore creating a whole population of disenfranchised, undocumented sub-citizens to fend on their own, which would equate to multiply the problem that is at the base of immigration problems most European countries want to do something about?

What did these men expect or hope for, crossing the strait? Economic Refugee status, any work at any price? Once in such limbo, what are their expectations? Also, there are many tribal network rebuilt within the african diasporas in Europe, which can help but also recreate vicious circle of dependancy, and etc…

It is a story that, for starting with poverty, becomes extremely complex, though I am not sure how photography can unveil that complexity.

  • ERICA,NASHA…

both of you pulled out my quote to Charlie about “tried and true picture stories….” having a tough time in the market place and “times have changed, tastes have changed”

please please read this again in the context it was written and if i was not clear i will re-phrase it…these lines were written and intended in the context of the paragraphs before it, where i was writing about how the Netherlands woman was handling the same story…

so, yes there are two concerns of mine for both Ross and Charlie…both of whom want to shoot for major magazines…and it is only it this light that i am commenting at all…and with the same request from both men…

one, they are both missing key “lead” storytelling pictures that i feel any editor would want on the type of straight photojournalistic stories they are shooting..a traditional approach…

two, if i were a young emerging photographer and trying to do photojournalism, i would really concentrate on exploring the multi-media outlets….

BUT, more importantly, the Netherlands photographer is doing a journalistic story, yet in a conceptual way..it is her kind of thinking that lead to my comment “tastes change”…her approach is non-traditional, poetic, lends itself to much more than a magazine piece and is the kind of work that Ross and Charlie are competing with in today’s market..

we all know there is not too much of a market for the traditional picture story….but, there are some…still Natgeo, Geo, and a few regional magazines….so these should not be ignored….and my critique to Ross and Charlie was for these types of magazines..

but, i think we all also know that these magazines have shrinking budgets, have less space than ever, reduced production quality, and may sooner rather than later disappear…maybe not…i sure hope not….but, i would not think a young photographer would build a career plan around them either…

as has been the case since man started evolving on the planet, the new generation has to invent new stuff…take tradition and build something new out of it…

for example, i was able to get large bodies of work and build a career out of Natgeo..but, Natgeo then was not Natgeo now when we (Allard, Cobb, Abell,Doubilet,Stanfield, moi) got there…with the help of two key editors we had to re-invent the place from what it was …Life and Look magazines were the preferred tradition for us coming out of school and they both died just as we were trying to get started in our mid twenties..all the “greats” of the time worked for Life or Look…Natgeo had zero cred as a serious place to shoot before the 70″s….trust me, we had a mountain to climb…but we just kept at it…and finally, Natgeo became a home for many photographers and produced some fine essays over the years and some great ones are still being done..

but, i think anyone can see there now has to be another “new beginning”…an invention or a re-configuring of something that now exists…books are the “new light” for one thing and perhaps multi-media for another…and maybe a new type of magazine…

anyway, that is why we are all here…to figure this all out!!! i laughed out loud when Joni welcomed David Bowen to the “tortured souls of the DAH blog”..funny…

but surely i am an optimist by nature..and i can lend a hand to all of you and i have some new territory to explore myself, but it is incumbent on you guys to have to think think think …..

there is not one single “bad thing” in this whole equation…you, we, should have a great time doing this re-invention…i have had a great great time during my whole career “struggle”…you will too….hey, there is pleasure in pain, if the pain leads to pleasure…or, something like that!!! Bob, say it right!!!!

    peace, david

  • SEAN

I think we met briefly at the LOOK3 friday night artist reception… I am going to Perpignan – but have a full room right now. Let me see if I can ask a few people at NG if they have floor space or something. I’ll see what I can do….

  • DAVID:

Thanks for the detailed response. It was great, really. The feedback you have given is similar to what the editor told me, although they were looking for one night time cityscape type shot to give the photo essay a sense of place. I have some time, granted a week to pull something like this off, so I’m going for it. And no worries, your honesty is exactly what I was looking for.

The part about “tried and true” photography is a conversation we can leave for another day, maybe even in Perpignan as I will be there this year from Tuesday on, so I’m game to catch up there. In any event I understand exactly what you are talking about.

Thanks again! This is just the feedback I needed to get motivated to get back out there.

    all the best,
    Charlie

  • DAVID, CHARLIE, BOWEN, ERICA, PANOS…

    THE REST OF YOU ALL,

following up on David’s long last post (:))))): that’s some righteous shit he’s spillin’

take ears y’all take ears! :)))))…

    so, for you all…

here is something for you: more poetic than what i had tried to write long ago here about struggle…pleasure and pain..

this boy says it better :))))

    hugs

  • GUIDO…

you have asked a very good question…

i do not think we are YET artistically globalized…

all of us can see the clear artistic lines from one culture to another…i see totally different styles between Eastern Europeans, and Japanese and Scandinavians and French and Germans and Americans and well, of course, you Italians have it all!!! (didn’t Caravaggio “invent” light???)..why aren’t there more Spanish photographers?? everyone asks this question all the time, but that is another issue…

perhaps the biggest “jump” in style goes to Japan and Korea…..no Westerner could do this work…

Scianna i love…both the man and much his work….sorry i have not quoted him, i have not quoted many photogs i admire, but Scianna is a “real Italian”..Sicily!!! of course, the best part of Scianna is when he gets mad…wow, what a show!!!!

    cheers, david

  • DAH

I just got into my Super 8 motel room in Syracuse, NY–only 200 miles from tomorrow’s destination!–and the first thing I did was look at your photos. As a hardcore EM-lover, man, I am BLOWN AWAY!!! You have SO captured the ambience, energy, craziness, sweetness, rawness of it all. I LOVE IT!!! And at the bottom of one of the blog entries, you ask, “Do I need to include Detroit, the home of House music?” As a Detroiter myself, you can imagine my response. God, man, you’ve got to come to the Mecca!!! DEMF, the last weekend in May 2009. BE HERE!!! Wait a minute. When is your baby due? It may not work for you to travel this year, but SOME year. Please!

And your book is going to be a smash hit. We EM folks love nothing better than to see ourselves in our element. Of course, I see it as a film documentary with LOUD sound! Oh yes.

  • There probably is a trend to photography from different countries, but is it disappearing? Im Polish, but because Ive lived all around (Canada, US, now Korea) I dont think I shoot in a Polish way. But then again I dont shoot in a Korean way or an American way or a Canadian way (is there such a thing as Candian photography?). I think its less the country of origin or even where you have always lived and more the influences youve picked up along the way that shape you, maybe with a dash of seasoning from your nationality/culture.

interesting that you mention film.. it’s been an ambition for a long while to make a film about it all.. perhaps put some of the more extreme happenings into a one month time frame.. 4 commissions in the life of a photographer and writer who cannot afford the life they live.. the twists required to get the money to do the job.. the oddness along the way.. then back home.. to living in a bedsit or a studio.. eating beans on toast for 4 or 5 days then back to it..

5 star living, part time… limos, champagne and beans on toast…
i’m going to write some of what we got up to..
    yes.
