view from my hotel

The view from my hotel as I wake up to my first morning in the state of Punjab, in the north-west of India, on the border with Pakistan. There is a quiet environmental and health crisis taking place here that I shall be documenting over the coming week. More updates soon… @sean_gallagher_photo This is part of a new body of work ‘Toxic Development: Pollution in India’, sponsored by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

This woman loves to have her photo taken. Whenever I walk by her campsite behind the clinic she says "Thura! Thura!" Which basically means, Take my picture! She looks straight into the camera with the most serious expression. It's not until I show her the photo that she cracks and laughs at hysterically at herself. Her scars are a mark of beauty for the Nuer people. Photo by Katie Basile @basilekatie #southsudan #beauty
