Newlyweds . Puerto Rico.

For the last few years I’ve struggled with doing two books simultaneous. It doesn’t sound like an idea I would recommend to anyone. Off for a Family Drive was in the works years ago. Then I dropped it. Now I’ve brought it back and am ready to make a very large print of the picture above from that book ( to be). Yet I’m also in the middle of shooting BeachGames which at one point I thought was donea year ago but then decided to keep going. So for me to be happy there’s gotta be a bit of anguish, perhaps a bit of drama, a bit of infatuation, all part of needing that “fire in the belly”..Very very luckily I arrived to a point where I can focus only on the sweet tensions of artistic pursuit. This is something I feel I can pass on to others. Just a tiny twist of the key can change the way you think which of course leads to the way you work. Come to my loft in NY June 3. See what my students have done the week prior. It’s always a show to be seen and the photo community of New York is there. Warm up band will be some famous photog as always. Celebratory party follows as usual. Check if you wish to join the DAH workshop circus. I think there are 3-4 spots left. Springtime in New York. This one will rock it good

Bike Week

It’s Bike Week in the outer banks. Harley Heaven. There’s all kinds of activities from cole slaw wrestling to bikini contests to prayer service to the Wall of Death photographed here. The death wall was so dramatic I missed half of the bikini contest but I can see that any day on the beach. Yet where else can I see two guys riding around throttle cranked hard inside what is effectively a large wooden barrel pulling 2 g’s like fighter pilots? My family doesn’t want me getting a Harley but I’m always tempted when I see some of these bikes which really can be works of art. I raced motocross at 16 yet never even thought of attempting the Wall of Death. I ended up enjoying a road Ducati in high school and took long trips alone, my sleeping bag strapped on. Slept anywhere. My first teenage sense of independence came from that motorcycle. Yet maybe my family is right. No time for a Harley. However it’s fun to think about it. #motorcycles #obx #bikeweek

EPF 2016

From Instagram post:

I’m teaching my granddaughter Lyla,2, how to look at life through a viewfinder. To have the eye of a hawk and the deftness of a deer. She gets it. I’m also teaching her the difference between the dozens of pictures she sees on the iPhone and the tactile nature of fine prints and finished quality books. She gets that too. She listens, she learns.

I’m training her to be the recipient of the Emerging Photographer Fund (EPF) grant in 20 years.

Right now in 2016 BurnMagazine is awarding $15,000. in grants for an emerging photographer through the Magnum Foundation, supported by generous private donors, and Fujifilm for the Young Talent Award for photographers under 25. I started this @burnmagazine fund in 2008 to aid worthy emerging photographers who needed a boost with projects of merit. We have an international jury of respected curators and editors to choose this year’s recipients. See

The EPF recipients will be announced at LOOK @look3festival in Charlottesville,Va in early June. The deadline for your submissions is May 2, 2016. Lyla is growing up bombarded with images at the same time she’s learning to speak and write. Learning two languages at once. Maybe a little Spanish too.

In any case I will try to impart early for her, as I do with all those I mentor, the importance of finding her own voice, her individual authorship, and her precious special offering in an often chaotic world. Looking at life through a viewfinder is not myopic. Sorting moments and shapes and emotions in a ” frame” only opens a panorama of unlimited creative possibilities and high adventure. It’s all about the eye. Go Lyla!!🎈 -dah-

Trying to decide if they are gonna paddle out one more time. If the surf was fantastic, no decision. Surf in the dark. Yet when it’s good but not great, maybe another rum punch works best at sunset on Jobos beach Puerto Rico. #Jobos #puertorico #surfers

NY Workshop

I’ve locked it down. My first week long shooting workshop in my New York loft in two years. Well I’ve been running around shooting BeachGames. Anyway, I’m back. May 29-June 4. Intense week of mentoring 12 students to developing their own visual authorship. Guest curators, photo editors, and iconic photographers. I stretch my students to their limits. They too will shoot a photo from our rooftop I’m sure. A popular hang. Yet their real work will come from the streets of New York. In whatever form they choose. Join us if you dare a life changer!!
