New friends

New friends. Playa Santa Maria, Cuba. March 2017. Shot for “BeachGames” zine upcoming this year. Twists and turns and outcomes are totally irrelevant. Love is love. Catch it if you can.

Kathryn

My friend, pro model/actress/photographer Kathryn @kathrynbrolin, takes a break from her own photo shoot recently in Havana to be in one of my photographs. Kathryn is serious about producing her own book of photographs. I’m helping her to think photo book, and at the same time she’s now a character in my BeachGames zine to be produced this year. Most of us have a few rough edges in life. So it’s such a luxury when everything simply flows.

Owen Alan Harvey

I’m guessing that everyone in this audience feels they spend half their life on the computer and the phone. I know I do, and I’m traveling around shooting all the time. 90% of my computer time is spent looking at pictures, yet still I must force myself to walk away and get on my bike or take a hike. My relationships are often on Skype or FaceTime as well, so about a year ago I started shooting my screens. Portraits. The subject controls the camera of course, so my only job is to coax a bit. My good nephew Seth, and his bride of one year Ahlam, have been subjects of my IG stream many times. Now, as of 4 days ago, along comes little Owen Alan Harvey born at home in Beverly, Mass, with the aid of two midwives and a tub of warm water. Sounds perfect to me. Owen is the first boy in our family for 35 years. That last boy was Seth, now a pro pilot. Seems not so long ago I was looking at Seth as an infant. So life moves too damned fast and I must capture it as I can. Screenshots are better than no shots. Welcome Owen to your Harvey clan heritage where the only rule is to just be who you are! I have no doubt that with parents like Ahlam and Seth you will be all that you can be. 🎈

Family

I’ve had more than a few adventures the last 5 weeks shooting/mentoring in Cuba and Puerto Rico, then ending with seminars in the U.K. Yet nothing beats coming home to this. Wizards of social media tell me I shouldn’t put my sentimental family pictures on my IG. Yet I can’t help it. Those of you who track me here well know I’ve had some great muses for my BeachGames work, yet sweet Lyla,3, just has to be my top model of all. Mom Michelle and dad Bryan have a bundle of energy and creativity and intelligence on their hands. They have big responsibilities. I have the incredible luxury of simply observing. Travel to exotic places is of course exhilarating, but my front porch is as far as I need to go for a bit. Birds sing, the afternoon light warms, and Lyla’s laugh goes straight to my heart, remembered now forever.

Benicia

When I got back to Benicia, my friend took me with her on her walk. And a mighty soothing walk it was. This is Day 2 of life in Northern California. I am @swirlbook.

Restroom shooting

I sure do like shooting in restrooms. I can do that no matter where I am. Even when I don’t know where I am. This is Day 2 of a life uprooted, and I am @swirlbook.

The end of my first day living in Northern California, after 27 years an Angelino. Right now I’m staying at a dear friend’s house, but I feel a little shell shocked. I’m cold and it’s starting to rain. I’m not in Los Angeles anymore. I am @swirlbook.
